Another I saw this weekend was in the Penn State game where Bill O'Brien let something like 11 seconds run off the clock at the end of the first half before calling timeout to try to get the ball back. That's not something you ever have to worry about as an offensive coordinator, but you need to keep track of things like that as a head coach.
BB, why you gotta be picking on my teams?!?!?!?! In all seriousness though, I was watching both and yelling at the TV. BOB's wasn't that big of a deal but Philbin's playcalling at the end there made ZERO sense.

Never a doubt that the game would stand as final

Quote:
Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.
This is the wort part. NFL supports the decision to not overturn the call, but never say that it was the CORRECT call(it wasn't)

It was obvious they'd stand behind the "simultaneous possession" crap as well as the "no indisputable evidence to overturn" line

Yes, the Packers have faced 3 tough defenses this year, but that didn't seem to stop them last year when they rolled through everyone.

The Packers have just generally been out of rhythm dating back to that Giants playoff loss last year. They're averaging ONE offensive TD per game, scoring two others on a punt return that should have been called back and a fake field goal. They also seem to be having some uncharacteristic red zone trouble.

This isn't the same juggernaut offense that blew past everyone last year. The Saints defense is by far the worst the Packers will have faced, but I don't think they're just going to magically kick it into gear and hang 50 because they're up against a weak defense.

The NFL ALWAYS circles it's wagons when an official, replacement or not, makes a bad decision. Think back to the playoff game last year where there were two horrible calls made. The NFL said the Packer was down by contact because the outside part of his foot was touching the ground....come on.

So we shouldn't be real surprised. The NFL could be chewing these guys right the **** out behind the scenes, but publicly, they will ALWAYS support the officials call, no matter how wrong it may be.

Well, we've seen two recent incidents of that failing as well. I'm starting to wonder if the defense should just volleyball-set it out the back of the end zone or something now....I think I've seen more successfull hail marys, college and pro, in the past two years than I did in the rest of my life before that.

This was difficult to listen to. Really, I wonder what would have happened if the official came out to the field and announced that the call was overturned and the Packers won? Would the league have released a statement saying it was the wrong call? Would the official have gotten replaced? They care more about the shady rules that they've made being correct instead of common sense taking precedence.

No to both. The NFL ALWAYS circles the wagons around the decisions of the officials. The ref might get chewed out behind the scenes but publicly, the NFL would have agreed with whatever he called and would have justified it any way they could.

I'd expect that. Behind the scenes talk about it and do whatever, but in front of the fans, teams, and media, show support.

Trying to intercept it still has a far higher chance of ******* it up. That was a freak play that usually never happens. Now you can say the same about the Packers, both of them were freak plays, but overall going for the pick is much riskier than swatting it down.

Because that's how sound business run the show. You don't sandbag your employees in front of an audience to teach them a lesson. You support them and try to correct the issue behind closed doors.

Just ask coaches how they teach it. I know I have seen it and heard it coached where you knock it away. Like how we did it in the SB. Kenny P, along with a bunch of other players knock it down.

The flip side of it, as an offensive coach, you tell the player to trail to come and try to catch that knock down, like Gronk almost did.

But that's why it's a prayer. Throw a prayer up and see what happens.

I've seen just as many TD's from knocking it away as I have when the DB goes for an INT. I don't really think it matters how you teach it.

Funny thing listening to Mike and Mike in the Morning. Greenie said something along the lines of how the NFL is committing major hypocrisy. With player safety supposedly being the paramount concern over the last four or five years, these officials are jeopardizing the that very safety. Same thing as wanting to go to 18 games.

It's a matter of how you want to approach it. I always side with the knock it down, and have guys keep an eye on the trailing player. That doesn't mean it's mean it's 100% fool proof, but you go with a way and teach it just like any other thing in football.

They need to bring back some of the older GMs in the past that had more power and able to effectively communicate and be heard by the owners.

They still have those types of owners as it was Kraft and Mara who got everyone together last year during the strike. For all we know those 2 are the ones leading the charge against the refs.

I don't see how any correlation can be made to player safety vis a vis replacement refs. If anything they've been more careful with the players than the regulars.

The regular refs probably want at 18 game season because it would mean they get 2 extra paychecks.

It isn't so much the refs (though a few miscalls haven't helped). Its the players themselves. Players are walking closer to the edge of the rule book because of the replacement refs, trying to see what they can get away with. There were a couple of hits (two or three flagrant hits on the quarterback, including one after he had slid forward) in the Colts/Jags match that if the regular refs (or a competent ref anyway) had been there would have been flagged but the replacement refs didn't flag them. So with players thinking they can get away with more they are going to try to get away with more, thus putting player safety in risk.

In Baseball the object is to go home and be safe.

They really didn't play any good defenses last year though. They played the 32nd, 31st x2, 29th, 27th, 26th, 25th, 24th, 23rd x2, 22nd, 18th, 14th x2, 13th, and 12th ranked defenses last year. I expect them to improve a lot, but they'll never approach 2011 efficiency and explosiveness again. Their defensive schedule last season was a joke.
