I think we're stuck with him for at least one more season, unfortunately.

The F.O. probably realizes he really sucks though (unless they are just ridiculously incompetent) and will hopefully try to mask his deficiencies by upgrading the pass rush and the safety next to him.

The next time they do a forum mock, someone let me know. Also, once the season is over and they do the final forum mock, myself, CMD and TH should team up as triple GMs. Yay or nay?

Griffin is playing like a backup...would they dump 1 year after giving him a contract? I really like Markelle Martin, I hope he can push for playing time next year. Maybe Coty can push Mouton out of the picture...wait, he needs no help there.

Marks may have improved, but isn't this the last year of his contract? Probably gone. I still think Klug can be used as a pass rusher (seen him play against the run a lot). Martin looks like a keeper so far, and obviously Casey is. But wouldn't it be great to have another Haynesworth type?

So apparently Roos just got his appendix removed and could possibly miss this weeks' game. With Mathis and Freeney, that could be a total disaster, especially if Locker is expected to start.

Who do you think will play LT? Move Stewart over and play The Mike Otto at RT?

Leroy Harris has experience at RT as well. Stewart at LT. Harris at RT. Velasco at RG. Kevin Matthews at C. But that's a whole lot of moving around, and keeping guys where they usually play may be worth not getting our best guys on the field.

Wyatt said Otto would start at LT if Roos couldn't go. Per Munch at presser

Yikes. Wonder if that means we'll be using some 2TE sets, since Stevens should be helping Otto a lot and I don't want Cookie to see fewer snaps because our TE in 1TE sets will be needed to block.

He's ok. Good, active run defender. Great motor. Not a great pass rusher though. Looks like he has a decent get off, but he struggles to finish once engaged with the OT. I made the comment earlier that he can be ok as your base LE if you have a serious threat on the other side or if you have a good interior rush. Unless he improves a lot, he looks like a 5-8 sack per year type of guy. Maybe he will, who knows.

He's more than solid against the run, but against the pass, he seems like he's always able to almost get there but not quite good enough to finish the play for a sack or cause heavy pressure. He's got 2 sacks so far, and did have a big time FR on Sunday, so he does occasionally flash or come through with a big play. Hopefully, he can end the season strong for about 6-7 sacks.

I still have hope for Morgan. We don't have much of a rotation at all right now. We have 3 DE's on IR, so our only DE's are Morgan, Kamerion Wimbley, Pannel Egboh, and Scott Solomon (a 7th RD rookie). So Morgan and Wimbley don't get much of a break due to the drop off in talent. And to add to that, Wimbley hasn't been much of a threat opposite him, and the DT's aren't world beaters when it comes to collapsing the pocket.

I think when we add better DE's to allow Morgan to stay fresh, and also add a DT who can collapse the pocket, then we'll find out if Morgan is that 8-10 sack a year base end we thought he could be when we drafted him.

Morgan kinda reminds me of Greg Ellis, although maybe not quite as valuable to his team at the moment. I think of him as a very solid guy in that mold, but we need a difference maker at DE (doesn't look like Wimbly will be that guy, he looks less valuable than Morgan to me).

It'll be interesting to see how they address DE after this year assuming we get the same DE play we had seen so far. I think we could go for more of a pass rush specialist to fill our need (Bruce Irvin-ish maybe), but if we pick super high maybe there's more of a Mario Williams type. I haven't paid much attention to next years class to get an idea who we may have to choose from.

In a perfect world Morgan would develop like Chris Long has. Long was having trouble finishing early on as well, but his sack totals just kept increasing every season, and now he's a great pass rusher from the LE spot. They have similar body types (although Morgan is a little thicker) in that they aren't freakishly long like some pass rushers (JPP, Chandler Jones, Aldon Smith), but Long uses his hands to disengage soooo much better than Morgan does, and I'm not really sure Morgan can dip and turn the corner very well. Plus he uses that stupid ****ing spin move way too much and it never works.

The problem Morgan may run into - time and money. Everyone knows our pass rush needs to be improved, so if we address it, someone's spot has to be taken, but who? I'd like to see us stick it out with Morgan to give him time, but we just gave Wimbley a chunk of cash...how easy is that contract to get out of if we deem him as the one who needs to be replaced (I really don't know...anyone??)? We're not financially hampered by Morgan at all.

Mathis was inactive last week vs the Browns and Freeney has been hobbled with a ankle sprain for about a month. The pass rush has been spotty at best with injuries to both of them this year. FYI to the Nashville folks, the Colts have been outscored on the road this year 76-30 in two losses.

Is it more the fact that they've won two in a row with Matt out there and can rest Jake even longer, or is it that Chris Johnson seems to be in a better place with Hasselbeck out there. Feel free to say both.

Fortunately, it's looking like a very good DE class this year. I don't think there's a Mario Williams/Julius Peppers type DE prospect this year, but that's fine. JPP wasn't seen as that type of prospect either, and there looks to be some similar guys who have the physical tools to explode in the NFL.

There are some very good seniors, such as Alex Okafor (6'5, 265 lbs., 4.67 40), Dion Jordan (6'6, 243 lbs., 4.74 40), Michael Buchanan (6'5, 240 lbs., 4.75 40), and Ezekial Ansah (6'5, 270 lbs., 4.74 40), but they're probably more 2nd RD values.

Okafor is having a great senior season so far. Dion Jordan plays a DE/OLB type role, and is a lanky athlete. I'm a big Buchanan fan, and I like him more than Whitney Mercilus since I think his first step is better and he bends better (Mercilus benefited a ton from pressure that Buchanan brought across from him, and like ATL said, Buchanan pushed a lot of guys into Mercilus's arms). Ansah is getting a lot of hype on the forums. He's extremely new to the game, being an immigrant from Africa who originally came to BYU to tryout for basketball so he never played HS ball, and he was previously a track athlete, so he has great straight line speed. He's playing inside at DT right now, but he projects to LE in the NFL and everyone's anxious to see how well he performs at the combine.

The juniors seem to be where the 1st RD talent is. Jarvis Jones (6'2, 242 lbs., 4.74 40) and Barkevious Mingo (6'4, 240 lbs., 4.57 40) are the Von Miller type of prospects. Both project best to 3-4 OLB or 4-3 OLB in a Zone Blitz.

Mingo would be the best bet for us, scheme-wise, since his height makes him a better fit for DE. I'd be ok with drafting Jones to play WLB, and resigning Zach Brown to a 3rd down/passing situation role (when Jones would move from WLB to RE for passing situations), but we already have a blitz-backer in Ayers and Jerry Gray already doesn't utilize his pass-rushing to it's most. If Gray was let go in exchange for a 4-3 ZB coordinator, or changed philosophies now that he has specific talent, then Jarvis Jones could work. Although, it'd suck to have used a 2nd RD pick on what would now be a situational player in Brown, but Jones could be worth it. Otherwise, I think we're better served with Mingo between the two. Mingo's probably the JPP-esque prospect this year, since he has the most potential among the draft eligible pass-rushers. I'm not sure how long his arms are, or how he'll play after he bulks up to hopefully around 260, but if he can bulk up and retain the same athletic ability like Freak was able to do, then perhaps he can be a 12 sack a year demon like Kearse was for us. Not that I want to compare Mingo to a guy who ran a 4.48 40 and 37" vertical at 6'4, 272 lbs., but the similarities are cool.

The more prototypical guys are Bjoern Werner (6'4, 256 lbs., 4.78 40), Sam Montgomery (6'5, 260 lbs., 4.59 40), Corey Lomonier (6'3, 242 lbs., 4.78 40), Damontre Moore (6'4, 250 lbs., 4.83 40), and although he's out for season, Jackson Jeffcoat (6'5, 245 lbs., 4.67 40).

Werner is my #1 DE, despite some people preferring Mingo, and it's not really that close for me. The guy does EVERYTHING, and I especially like him more because he can get to the QB in numerous ways and is a great finisher when getting to the QB. In college, talents like Mingo and others usually rely on their speed and raw athleticism to get to the QB, so they don't develop a repertoire of pass-rush moves - they just try to outrun the OT off the edge every time. Werner can beat OT's around the edge, he can overpower the OT with a bullrush, and he can go inside and split between the OT and OG to get into the backfield. Not to mention, he has a great motor, he's strong vs the run and RB's go down even when he just gets one hand on them, and he can set the edge.

Montgomery isn't as explosive as his teammate Mingo, but he's much bigger and stronger. He's probably the most prototypical DE in the possible class, but regardless of the physical tools, he seems pretty inconsistent to me. One moment, he'll push All-American OL Barrett Jones 3 yards off the LOS, and the next play, he'll get single blocked by TE Michael Williams. His technique can get sloppy, and he gets high too often. Lemonier is an explosive edge rusher, and although he can tend to overrun some plays, he can make OT's look foolish off the snap. Moore and Jeffcoat are probably 2nd RD values, especially Jeffcoat if he declares despite coming off injury.

Although, all of this is before the combine, so it could change. In DL's, I pay attention to arm length, since arm length is more important than height since long arms allow DL's to keep OL's away from their body (It's the reason why I liked Chandler Jones a lot last year, among other things), and vertical leap and broad jump, since those are more important than a DE's 40 time. Lower body explosiveness is more important for DL's than long speed, and vertical leap and broad jumps are more indicative of a player's explosiveness than the 40 test.

We need to bring in more than one DE this offseason. Not only are our starters not cutting it, but we have no depth either (Keyunta Dawson and Leger Douzable, even when healthy, are fringe roster players; Ball would be our best DE if healthy, but he should probably retire due to concussions). So not only would it serve us to draft a DE to develop, but also sign a DE in FA who can contribute to the rotation immediately. Osi Umenyiora is my #1 FA this offseason. Regardless of his age, he'll be an ace off the bench and I think is worthy of a contract similar to what Wimbley received. Dwight Freeney could also be an option, seeing as how he's been injured this season and I've read he's struggling at 3-4 OLB in Pagano's new scheme. If we could get him here to be a 3rd down/pass-rush specialist, then I think that'd be an ideal role for him. Perhaps he can help Morgan out with that spin move!

I'd still love Starrrrrrrrrrr more!

Thanks for the breakdown Hope. Seems like we could have lots of options this year at DE. I'm gonna check some of those guys out when I can. I also think it'd be wise to go for more than just one DE, we need that much help.

Although I haven't watched him, sounds like Star would be a good addition...and no doubt we can use help inside on the D-line too.

I can't help but think back to the days when we had dominat D-lines. Our secondaries generally looked better and we had top rated defenses.

Well draft position may be more important long term (trying to find something positive) but this loss sucks. Our team should be in a better position to be a better team than Indy.

I also think the new NFL OT rules don't make sense, but that does not come as a surprise.

Does any one else hate reading that our team doesn't have any glaring holes? Because I am.

It's the nice way of saying, "They have meh everywhere."

Not sure who to blame. The defense did fine. They pressured luck, and only gave up 13 points until the OT drive. The offense only scored 13, but for whatever reason, it doesn't seem like they had a bad day. They didn't turn the ball over, and CJ had a solid day which kept the TOP even. Seemed like a case of just not quite good enough.

Some gutless calls by the officials today, but I don't like blaming the refs.

Blame missed plays.

McCarthy drops a pick that hits him in the numbers.

Hasselbeck completely misses an open Cook for a TD.

Defensive offsides negating a turnover.

Bironas missed FG.

The refs certainly didnt help. The OPI's seemed iffy, bogus hands to the face call on Ayers. Blowing forward progress stopped on a potential turnover, making it unreviewable.

Well you know where i stand. 13 pts at home against the Colts defense doesn't cut it. You need to get the ball in the endzone.

My guess is Locker could have started this week hadn't they had some success last week.

I need one of you guys to post my picks for the Week 9 thread. I'm right on the bay up in Maryland and I'm going to be absolutely devastated by the hurricane. What I'm thinking is that I'll PM you the picks tonight, with a bunch of stipulations, so you know which one to post. For instance, I may say:

Steelers @ Giants - Steelers if Polamalu is healthy, Giants if he looks doubtful.

Make sense? Got any volunteers?
