Schwartz to me is very like Rex Ryan. He is a helluva defensive coordinator and his personality gets his guys fired up and willing to go extra for him. However that isn't always the best method as a head coach. There has to be a guy who hands down discipline for any transgression. That may not make him a popular guy all the time, and God knows we hear enough of how guys love to play for these types of coaches, however if not nipped in the bud players go further and further until it becomes a liability. There is a reason why the Lions are one of the most undisciplined teams in the league, be it in terms of penalties or simply not executing

Rex Ryan is exactly the kind of coach I think Schwartz is. They make for good coordinators and motivators but aren't good long-term whole-team leaders.

IMO even that was questionable. He was a good DC, after a pretty shakey start, but he (ironically given this thread) rode the success of his star DT, Albert Haynesworth, during contract years to success. Even during these years the Titans D was often exposed convincingly when AH went out with injuries.

This. I don't have a problem saying that he's not a bust yet, because it is too early. But some people around here have short memories, and that entire first year people were ready to annoint Suh as the best DT in the game and McCoy was garbage who was laughed at for being in the same conversation as Suh. Now you hear a bunch of excuses for Suh, how it's too soon, etc, but people had gone way overboard back then.

Now I understand it, because with how he destroyed Texas when he was leaving College, to what he did as a rookie, he deserved his props and a bunch of hype, but he was elevated to a status he hadn't earned yet(much like Cam Newton or VY as a rookie) so he deserves to be called out on just as much as anybody else.

let's be honest: anyone calling him the best DT in the league after one year was just as ridiculous as anyone calling him a bust, part way through this year. the fact that one existed doesn't really make the other one any better.

Suh is just raw. He has no moves or technique. Or discipline. That's why I view him as poorly coached.

And Schwartz was not a great DC either. Very vanilla. He just rode 2 hot years with Haynesworth.

What happened to Suh being an elite playmaker that was going to revitalize the Lions defense? This guy was supposed to be the cornerstone of their defense going forward. He was going to be their marquee player. He was going to be their Reggie White, or their Bruce Smith.

Truly great players raise the level of play of others around them.

A great player shows something consistently in 2.5 seasons. He doesn't regress, like Suh has.
if suh was playing DE in a wade phillips 34 hed be soooo much better than he is in a wide 9

Fairley has been amazing this year. You have no idea what you are talking about.

You cannot be serious. Nick Fairley has been phenomenal this year and has more than exceeded expectations. Fairley has been, by far, the Lions best defensive player this season.

As far as if Suh has been a bust or not, I guess it would depend on your definition of the word. I would lean towards no. Has he lived up to being the #2 pick in the draft? No, but he's still an above average player. He's a good interior pass rusher, even if he does struggle against the run.
