jr, i want some comic spoilers. what happens when they go into woodbury? does the governor die?
Comic spoiler
it's been a while since I've read this part so my memory is a bit foggy. But they all escape. The doctor and his assistant go back to the prison. One of them dies along the way, I don't remember which. The other goes back to Woodbury to tell the Governor where the prison is. Michonne doesn't go back to the prison with everyone else. She stays there, chains the governor to the wall, cuts of his dick, gouges out his eye, and cuts his arm off. I'll go back and read it today to see if I missed anything.
Look at it this way, if Rodgers had Allstate instead of State Farm, he'd be protected from mayhem like this

The show is greatly deviating from the comics. In the comics, Michonne and Andrea are at the prison. The group sees the helicopter crash so Glenn, Michone, and Rick drive to it. When they get to the crash, they see footprints, so they check it out. When they get there, they don't sneak in, they actually meet the Governor there.
At Woodbury, a lot of the same stuff happens. They have the fights with the zombies on chains, they chain up Glenn and Michonne to question them (beatings and rapping follow).
The Governor cuts of Rick's right hand, Michonne bites off the Governor's ear. They actually let Glenn go without asking him questions or beating him up, but he can hear everything they are doing to Michonne. Glenn and Martinez help Rick escape. The Doctor and his assistant go with them but the Doctor gets bit in Woodbury.
Michonne does all sorts of crazy stuff to the Governor. Takes an electric drill to his face and shoulder, rips his finger nails off with pliers, cuts half his right arm off, takes out one of his eyes with a spoon, and cuts off his dick.
They go back to the prison. Martinez betrays them and tries to go back to Woodbury. Rick catches up with him and breaks his neck.

Don't think it was necessary or goes with the feel of the show.
If by feel of the show you mean it wouldn't have been lame like the show is I agree. I just always expect more and the show always falls short. The characters all annoy me and even Daryl is becoming kind of a ***** which really pisses me off. I think a badass villain would do wonders for the show. It's like they try to show the nuances nature of people but imo fail miserably at it. I thought the episode was okay. Some laughably bad moments early but the episode got better as it went on. I just find myself grunting with dissaproval too much while watching.
Did you really need to see the Governor rape Maggie to believe he was a piece of **** human being? It was already blatantly clear... He already exemplifies the qualities of a villain without having to go around raping everyone. I think the 'mild' sexual assault was more than enough.
Honestly I don't get that feel from the Govenor. If I didn't read here how violent and evil he is in the comics I wouldn't have gotten it. In the show, other than the weird heads in jars that we saw how many weeks ago, what really bad things has he done? Seems he hasn't done more than other people in the show.
Pretty good episode. But so much potential to be better than this. At this point I like the story and need to know what happens next, but it doesn't wow me like the best shows do.

Exactly. I keep reading he is such a badass villain and he kind of bores me. All I get from him is that he is disingenuous and wanted to fuk Andrea. Like almost every character in the show he just seems kind of bland (though less bland than most).

I think it's pretty obvious. I don't need the gratuitous rape scene to connect point A to B. The show has implied several times that the Governor is essentially the main villain and doesn't do things by the book.

While generally I've been a big defender of the show on these forums. I have to agree with Gonzo on this one. The Governor in was one of the greatest villains in all of comics he did not need to be changed. Now did he HAVE to rape Maggie? No but all he did was make her take her shirt off.
Comics spoiler within a larger rant
In the comics the governor cuts off a main character's hand beats, brutalizes, and rapes Michonne and makes Glenn listen to the whole thing. All seemingly in a intricate plan to find the whereabouts of the prison. After getting completely ****** up by michonne including getting his dick cut off and his eye stabbed out he goes and still takes over the prison.
What really is the most evil thing that the governor has done on the TV show? Ambush a bunch of solders? To me it just doesn't measure up. Don't get me wrong the TV show's version isn't bad but as with everything that isn't good about this show it comes from when the show strays from the original content. When are TV execs going to learn that if you are going to base a show on a comic or novel stick to the damn story line. Simple comparison. Game of Thrones vs True Blood. Game of thrones changes very little from the books for the most part. True Blood has gone off the deep end and it seems pretty obvious that Game of Thrones is the much better series. Yeah for the most part people know what is going to happen if they read the books but guess what most fans of the books don't give a **** and quite the opposite they love it.

Are you angry that Daryl exists? Were you angry Shane wasn't killed as soon as Rick re-united with his family? You can't have it both ways.
See I don't think the show needs to stick close to the comics and really I am not even that upset the Governer didn't commit rape, I just wish he was a more interesting character. I kept hearing how great a villain he was and he has just been kind of flat. Still more interesting than most characters on the show but I find most characters awful.
I don't care if the deviate from the comics, I havnt read them. But really if you guys hadn't said anything I wouldn't have described him as brutal. A little ****** up and weird maybe, but we havnt seen him do anything so terrible yet.
I don't need to see him rape anyone, but itd be better if he were actually as badass as you all think of him as. We havnt seen him do anything but put heads in jars and kill soldiers for their supplies. If you want us to think a tv character is violent and brutal he's gonna have to do more than that.

Maybe they don't want you to think he is brutal and we are just projecting the comic book governor onto the tv governor? They are different characters after all. It's probably our fault.
Could easily be. But that goes back to the trend of having bland characters. Right now he just looks like the leader of another group of survivors that's doing better than the group we've been following.
Making him a true villain would have been great. Maybe they still will. But I think they've definitely done better with the new characters than the original ones at least.

Everything that is based off of a source material shouldn't have to exactly copy what the source material originally laid out.
To an extent I agree sure they can stray slightly from the main story that's fine but to go off and change nearly everything all you get is a new show where you stole a set of characters and even some of them are very different.

Would I trade Daryl and Merle for all the other much more awesome stuff that happened in the comics? Yes. I do like Daryl and the extended Shane story line but personally I'd rather have that taken out and the rest of the stuff added.

Let's be real here, complaints about the show are about more than just small details like a voice. Bland characters, ****** dialogue, dumb plots, these are all legitimate gripes.
Ive never touched the comics so all of my problems are directly related to the show and its writers. I'm glad to hear from most people that this season has generally improved in most areas tho, so I'm optimistic going forward when I catch up with this season over break.
