He is basically having his rookie season in reverse. The only difference has come in the rushing TD dip, which should have been expected anyways.
He's a young QB going through young QB things. His offense asks so much of him. Not all too different from Matt Stafford's situation.

I brought that up in the VY/Cam thread, too.

Yet as the Panthers are a relatively small market team that's doing poorly, I doubt that people watch him or us regularly play.

This to me, signifies someone who doesn't read entire threads. I've already stated that I don't think it's Newton's fault. He's an amazingly talented player who does a pretty good job of making his team look competitive.
The question in the title is "why do people think Cam is having a sophomore slump?"
I'm saying that the general perception of fans around the league is based on his lack of wins right now. It doesn't matter if he's the only bright spot on his team. When people review the season so far and compare Luck to Newton, they'll see that Luck took a really bad team and turned it around and that Newton is still losing.

I see zero problem with Newton, the question facing the Panthers is whether Rivera is a good HC capable of winning in the NFL. Other than the teams who already have a super franchise QB, there isn't a team in the NFL that wouldn't want Newton and his future as their QB.

According to Scott, Cam is the reason the GM was fired, and the reason Rivera is about to be fired. Lol. At least he's sticking to his guns.

I'm sure picking Jimmy Clausen and other bad picks had nothing to do with it.

As a few people have pointed out already, some people had their firm stance on Cam pre-draft, so regardless of what they have seen now anything they can use to still try and validate that they will. Just like the Stafford point. He was just a really good, young QB who was going through growing pains and you heard the excuses about the running game, offensive line, play-calling, etc. With Cam he was getting exposed, not reading the playbook, etc.
Same with Scott. He made a bold claim pre-draft which I sig quoted and that's fine, I don't have a problem with bold claims and they are usually not easy to nail. But to try and validate that and stick with it, it's Cam's fault the GM got canned. Not the numerous trade up for future picks, or signing Deangelo Williams, or the terrible job of roster management. There haven't been too many people who just changed their tune on Cam.
He may not ever be a top 5 or so QB and he may never win a SB, but he's certainly got all of the talent in the world and is going to make mistakes along the way just like any other young QB on a bad team.

I haven't really read the thread but aren't his numbers pretty much the same as last year save for the rushing touchdowns? I think people think he's "slumping" because he didn't really seem to improve and they aren't winning.

There are quite a few problems with that Panthers team, but Cam isn't one of them.

He destroyed my Fantasy Football playoff chances. Racked up 50 points against me.

Cam's biggest problem is that Ron Rivera is his HC. That has cost him at least 6 wins over the last 2 years, and possibly more if you had a really good HC for close games.
He hasn't always helped himself out late in games, either, but that's part of the maturation process.
He's in the 10-20 range and people probably think he's in the 15-25 range. Not really a big deal and I don't think it's worth agonizing over until the team starts winning. They really aren't that far enough. The terrible GM is gone and hopefully the Norv Turner disciple will be too at end of season.
He still needs a lot of work on his footwork and accuracy, however. The Falcons game should have been 28-0 at halftime if he could complete passes to wide open receivers.

He's been so impressive these last four games, playing better than he did at any point last season, so he's definitely progressing nicely.

After absolutely hating him pre-draft, he's become one of my favorite players to watch. Go Cam!
