Because they're in the same division. It's not common for division rivals to play each other in the playoffs.

In the playoffs the Giants have only played the Cowboys once, the Redskins twice, though the Eagles 4 times.

Other notable division rivals playoff matchups:

Dolphins-Jets: 1
49ers-Rams: 1
Packers-Vikings: 1
Cowboys-Redskins: 2
Steelers-Browns: 2
Broncos-Raiders: 2
Steelers-Ravens: 3

I'd say that for most rivalries the only fans that care are fans of the teams and maybe fans of other teams in the division. The only recent rivalries that I think really interests the whole nation are the Steelers-Ravens and Peyton's Colts-Patriots. No one outside the NFC East really cares about those rivalries, but those teams are all in big markets so they're always on primetime.

Picked 49ers at Patriots.

But there's four other games I want to watch...Packers/Bears, Broncos/Ravens, Colts/Texans and Steelers/Cowboys.

Also, interested in the Seahawks and Bills game. Hoping Bills pull off an upset. :)

These 2 teams have been playing each other since the 30s. You figure they'd see each other in the postseason more than once.

The part that bothers me the most is that isn't really even a rivalry. It's the Packers beating down the Bears. The Bears for being such a historic franchise, really haven't been that successful in the SB era. They cling onto that 85 team more than any other franchise in sports clings onto a singular season.

It's just not an interesting rivalry to me. For 20 years it was Favre smacking them around. Now it's Aaron Rodgers smacking them around. Before that during the 80s when the Bears were good it was the Bears defense smacking the lowly Packers around.

These 2 teams just don't peak at the same time, and it makes for a boring rivalry.

Until they got Cutler, this "rivalry" wasn't even a rivalry to me. The Bears never had a quarterback. It was such a lopsided rivalry. Even the sell of it was boring: "Urlacher vs Favre!" There was no qb rivalries before Cutler got there, even when the Bears were good you just knew their awful to mediocre qb wasn't ever going to take them anywhere.

It was just a boring rivalry.

And I know some fan will come in here and show me how the rivalry is like a 1:1 ratio of wins and losses btw the 2. Who cares. The Bears, outside one miracle year in 2006, haven't been a legit SB contender since the 80s.

Even now, with as good as they are, does anyone see them going to the SB, or as a SB contender? No.

I just can't get into this rivalry. It doesn't amuse me in the least. Seattle/49ers is more interesting to me right now than Bears/Packers.

I actually wasn't real interested in talking about the Packers-Bears rivalry specifically. It was just those two points you made that I had an issue with.

But really besides a couple, like the ones I mentioned, I think you have to be a fan of one of the teams to truly understand or get into the rivalry. I don't give a **** about Giants-Eagles, Cowboys-Redskins, or any combination of the four. In fact I actually despise them because they take up half the night games every year. But I'm sure for fans of those teams they're the best games of the year.

I can get into other rivalries. Like you said, Ravens/Steelers, Patriots/Colts, Patriots/Baltimore, I like 49ers/Seahawks recently, Atlanta/NO.

I obviously love the East rivalries. All of them.

I like the Giants/49ers rivalry that's developing again.

See, now I think what you're looking for is good football.

What makes a rivalry is that the game is more important than the win/loss record or playoff implications. In a great rivalry the game still matters when one team is good and the other bad, as you said is the case with Bears-Packers, or even when both teams are terrible. Other fans might not care when that's the case, but a rivalry is about the two teams and its fans, not the whole league.

Are you really into those rivalries or do you just like watching the games because it's good football. All the teams you listed have been good lately so the games have been good and have an impact on the playoffs. That's why the 49ers-Patriots are winning this poll. There's no rivalry there, but it's a game of two good teams with big implications on playoff seeding so it interests many people. On the other hand, Kansas City-Oakland is a pretty big rivalry, but they don't even make the poll because they're terrible teams right now so no one else cares.

That's a good point. I didn't think of it that way.

By that definition, nobody would care about a rivalry outside the 2 fanbases themselves in any rivalry.

Right, which is kind of what I was saying.

The Steelers-Ravens is the popular rivalry right now, but say both franchises fall of a cliff and are sub .500 for the next ten years. Everyone who currently loves this rivalry won't care about it anymore if that happens, but you can bet it'll still be important to Pittsburgh and Baltimore fans. Rivalries can be formed by multiple playoff matchups or both teams being good at the same time, but that's not what a rivalry is about.

I really never thought the Ravens-Steelers rivalries were that big of a deal. Its been pretty one sided so long as Ben is healthy.

There's a lot of good matchups this week. I agree with BBD that Packers/Bears are kind of underwhelming. Not a game i particularly look forward to, regardless of all the history.

I'd say 49ers/Patriots, Giants/Falcons, and Steelers/Cowboys are the top 3. Colts/Texans is also another good matchup. Broncos/Ravens is one i'm not hugely excited but it should still be a good game.

With Packers/Bears, thats 6 matchups that could be the biggest in any given week- and they're all on the same day. Its going to be a good day of football.

I think at 1 i'll watch Giants/Falcons, at 4 i'll watch Steelers/Cowboys, and of course the 49ers/Patriots game on SNF.

And the Packers own the Bears. The Packers have owned the Bears for the past 20 years. The Bears have largely been a meh franchise during the SB era. They had a nice little run in the 80s, and a decent run under Lovie Smith but that's about it.

I just don't see the sizzle in this rivalry. When the Bears were good, the Packers weren't. When the Packers were good, the Bears weren't. Only recently has both teams been good at the same time.

It just doesn't have the intensity that other rivalries have.

So it's the oldest rivalry. Big deal. The only people who are even remotely interested in it are Bears and Packer fans. A great rivalry is one that the whole nation is interested in seeing.

This isn't a compelling rivalry to me at all.
I definitely can see your point there, basically agree with all that ^.
