Paul Watson hopes to escalate quickly but not get out of hand.
Default New Year's Eve Mock- 2 Rounds

Round 1

1. Chiefs- Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
The Chiefs look to be pretty much locked into taking a quarterback here. The only wild card is if they keep GM Scott Pioli. Pioli might look to trade down, but without a clear #1 player in this draft, he might have a hard time finding any trade partners.

Smith is no Luck or RG3, but he does look like he'll stay put as the top QB in this year's class. He had a mostly phenomenal career at WV, something none of the other top QBs in this draft can really say. Smith is not great in any one area, but he's good in all of them.

2. Jaguars- Damontre Moore, OLB/DE, Texas A&M
With Geno Smith gone, the Jaguars could go in multiple directions with this pick. They obviously need a QB, but I still think this is too high for Mike Glennon. They could trade down, but it's a pretty good bet that the new ownership bring in Tim Tebow to 'save the franchise'. That puts the Jags in a position to fill another need at the top of the draft, and DE has been a huge need for years now.

Its not a given that Moore will declare at this point, but if he does I think he quickly emerges as a top 3 pick. He plays Von Miller's old position for the Aggies, and has been successful in doing so. His quickness off the edge may not be quite to Miller's level, but is still elite. Moore brings similar versatility as Miller and should make an immediate impact on Sundays.

3. Raiders- Luke Joekel, OT, Texas A&M
Oakland is another team that could go a lot of different directions, including QB. They could bring in a veteran or reach for one here. However, most pundits have the Raiders nabbing Utah DT Star Lotulelei here, but I see him slipping a bit. Left tackle may not be the greatest of the Raiders needs, but being able to install a franchise LT like Joekel would allow them to move incumbent Jared Veldheer to his more natural RT position, and give the Raiders the makings of a very good young offensive line, along with C Stefan Wisniewski.

Joekel is the clear cut best LT in this draft, and maybe the best player overall. He is very good to great in all facets of the game, and should be capable of starting immediately. He could hold down a team's LT position for the next 10-12 seasons.

4. Eagles- Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida St.
With Joekel off the board one pick before them, the Eagles turn their attention to the defense. Jason Babin was recently cut, and Trent Cole is rapidly aging. Another impact, high effort guy like Werner on the edge is just what the Eagles need to start turning their defense around. Dee Milliner may be tempting but this is too high for a CB who is not Morris Claiborne.

While Werner is certainly a high effort player, I think he will surprise a lot of people with his pure athleticism at the combine, and become a lock for the top 5. Werner is smart and versatile, despite having very limited football experience. He's a guy who could make an impact all over the field week in and week out on Sundays.

5. Lions- Dion Jordan, DE/OLB, Oregon
This may be a little high for Jordan right now, but the 6-7 DE has the versatility and athleticism to make the climb. Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril, if they are retained, would both be better in a rotation with Jordan and Lawrence Jackson. Jordan could be the final piece of the Lions' DL puzzle.

6. Cardinals- Mike Glennon, QB, NC St.
This is probably way too high for Glennon, but QBs are always taken too high. The Cardinals are absolutely desperate for a QB and OT, so with Joekel off the board, it comes down to the big armed Glennon and Michigan OT Taylor Lewan. If Lewan can shut down Jadevion Clowney in his bowl game, the Cards could grab him here, and trade back into the 1st round for a Tyler Bray or Matt Barkley type. For now though, they go with Glennon.

7. Browns- Manti Te'o, MLB, Notre Dame
The Browns should be thrilled to grab Te'o here. If they can land a DE and maybe a CB later, they will have the makings of a top 5 defense for 2013. While nabbing a pass rusher across from Jabaal Sheard is probably the bigger need, the players available at DE carry a lot of risk at this point. And with no WR worthy of the pick, the Browns should be more than happy to 'settle' for Te'o.

8. Jets- Jarvis Jones, OLB/DE, Georgia
This pick could definitely be Tyler Wilson, or even Tyler Bray. If you ask the Jets they will probably tell you their biggest need is WR. But the Jets glorified defense fell apart this season, and the pass rush has been lacking for years. Having Jarvis Jones fall into their laps at pick 8 changes everything. The risk with Jones is his spinal condition, but Rex Ryan knows he has to win now, and Jones could provide the biggest immediate impact of any player in this draft class.

9. Bills- Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas

The Bills have finally decided to go get a QB. Even if they sign Michael Vick, they could still grab a QB here. Wilson is similar in a lot of ways to former Bills QB Jim Kelly, and could be a good fit in Buffalo. He doesn't have the strongest arm or the best measurables, but he's a smart, gritty leader who could start for a long time.

10. Titans- Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
DTs tend to fall in the draft, and Lotulelei would give the Titans amazing value at this point. Chance Warmack is worth considering for Tennessee's weak interior OL, but the entire defense needs a makeover, and it all starts in the middle with Lotulelei.

11. Chargers- Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
The Chargers would have to be thrilled if Lewan drops out of the top 10 to fill their most glaring need.

12. Buccs- DeMarcus Milliner, CB, Alabama

Having Milliner fall to them would be a dream come true for Tampa Bay, who may even consider trading up for him to fill their biggest need.

13. Panthers- Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri

No doubt the Panthers need a stud DT, unless they want Luke Keuchley to become Jon Beason. Jonathan Hankins is more of a big body, but Richardson provides tremendous value and probably wont make it out of the top 10.

14. Saints- Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
The Saints need help all over their defense, and while DT may be a bigger need, Ansah's potential is through the roof, and they'll be happy if he falls this far.

15. Dolphins- Corderralle Patterson, WR, Tennessee

This is a bit of a reach right now, but it shouldn't take Patterson long to establish himself as the #1 WR in this class. He gives Tannehill a legitimate weapon.

16. Rams- Eric Fischer, OT, Central Michigan
A slight reach right now, but Fischer should climb draft boards as he becomes better known. He is clearly the top tackle behind Joekel and Lewan, and fills a major need. Chance Warmack, and Keenan Allen, or a DT are also tempting.

17. Steelers- Jonathan Hankins, NT, Ohio St.
Steelers fans will want more OL help, but Hankins could take over for Casey Hampton soon to anchor the Steelers D. He's a great value at this point who can make his fellow defenders look better.

18. Cowboys- Bennie Logan, DT/DE, LSU
For sure this is a reach, but the Cowboys look to be locked in on the D line. Logan is the top 34E available. Jonathan Jenkins would also be a reach at NT.

19. Giants- Jonathan Banks, CB, Mississippi St.

Banks falls a little and the Giants are happy to pounce. Their defense needs improved all over and is ready to fall off the edge if they don't do something soon. They could also consider Warmack or one of the LSU DL here.

20. Bears- Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama

OT is a bigger need, but the new Chicago coach's #1 priority will be OL. Period. Warmack is easily the best available.

21. Vikings- Keenan Allen, WR, Cal
Percy Harvin may be gone soon, and even with him, the Vikings need to add another receiver. A DT or CB could be other options.

22. Rams (From Redskins)- Alec Ogeltree, LB, Georgia

A bit of a surprise pick and not a huge need, but with Warmack gone, the Rams could go with Ogeltree to give them the makings of a great LB corps. St. Louis is another team that could also go DT here.

23. Colts- Logan Ryan, CB, Rutgers

Ryan is a guy who should really climb the draft boards, and fills perhaps Indy's greatest need.

24. Ravens- Kyle Van Noy, LB, BYU

Van Noy may not be an ideal fit in Baltimore, but he should become a dynamic force whether he plays ILB or OLB in the 3-4 or the 4-3. Ozzie Newsome looks pretty zeroed in on an ILB.

25. Bengals- Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU
Mingo's slide ends in a good fit in Cincinnati, who is sure to have a spot for him on their defense.

26. 49ers- Jonathan Jenkins, NT, Georgia

Maybe not the 49ers biggest need (they don't have many), but Jenkins would be a wonderful luxury pick here.

27. Texans- Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee

Houston seems to have zeroed in on a WR for awhile now, and Hunter provides a good fit and excellent value here. Recent events could turn the Texans to defense though.

28. Falcons- Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
Vaccaro is a good value who could fill one of several big defensive needs for the Falcons. He could give them a great safety combo ala San Fran. Giovanni Bernard or Tyler Eifert could be tempting but Atlanta really needs to fix their defense.

29. Seahawks- Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
Like his teammate Mingo, Montgomery falls to a good match. DE is not Seattle's biggest need, and they could opt for Baylor's Terrance Williams here as well, but grabbing Montgomery and moving Red Bryant back inside would make both their DE and DT positions even more deep and talented.

30. Raiders (Predicted trade from Patriots)- Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee

I couldn't leave Bray out of my 1st round, and the Patriots love to trade.

31. Packers- Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
The Packer need to improve their OL, and with no OT worth this pick, Cooper provides good value and an excellent fit.

32. Broncos- Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama

Williams is beginning to climb draft boards and give Denver a wonderful fit for perhaps their biggest need.

Round 2

1. Jaguars- Matt Barkley, QB, Southern Cal
2. Chiefs- Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
3. Eagles- Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon St.
4. Lions- Xavier Rhodes, CB/FS, Florida St.
5. Bengals (From Raiders)- Matt Elam, S, Florida
6. Cardinals- Kyle Long, OT, Oregon
7. Jets- Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
8. Titans- Dallas Thomas, OG/OT, Tennessee
9. Bills- Kevin Minter, LB, LSU
10. Dolphins- Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
11. Buccs- Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
12. Panthers- David Amerson, CB/FS, NC St.
13. Chargers- Barrett Jones, C/OG, Alabama
14. Rams- Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
15. Cowboys- D.J. Fluker, OT/OG, Alabama
16. Steelers- Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas St.
17. Giants- Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
18. Bears- Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia
19. Redskins- Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
20. Vikings- Kawaan Short, DT, Purdue
21. Ravens- Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
22. Dolphins (From Colts)- Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
23. 49ers- Larry Warford, OG, Kentucky
24. Bengals- Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
25. Falcons- Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
26. Texans- Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
27. Patriots- Tavon Austin, WR/KR, West Virginia
28. Seahawks- Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas
29. Broncos- Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma St.
30. Packers- Travis Long, OLB/DE, Washington St.

Can anyone familiar with the Raiders let us know what the story with Veldheer is? Is he a solid LT or what? I'm assuming he isn't as good as Joeckel projects to be but is he good enough that the Raiders likely won't draft a LT and would instead trade back instead of taking Joeckel?

Cowboys pick at 18 may be the worst one I've seen. I would turn off the draft and start looking for puppies to kick.

Right position, wrong type. Although I would take Richardson if the others were off the board because I think he is a good prospect, we need a nose tackle like Hankins rather than a pass rushing UT like Richardson.

In the second, Amerson wouldn't be bad, but I'd rather go offensive line. Barrett Jones would offer a lot of flexibility for a line that was riddled with injuries, Fluker could come in and start right away and upgrade the right tackle spot.

Why would the Bengals draft 2 safeties when they just locked up Reggie Nelson for a couple years.

Terrible Eagles draft. We have BRANDON GRAHAM! He played great this year. We also have Trent Cole and we have good depth that can start. Werner makes 0 sense...

I'd take that for the Vikings, although after Jeffersons play CB could be a strong possibility in round 2. WR remains unquestioned #1 need.

Jared Veldheer is very good, almost great. Even PFF says he is right on the verge of elite status. Raiders don't need to draft a left tackle. Its not a bad pick but its not a need. Raiders D-line is a mess. Raiders should take best DE or DT at #3 or trade down.

That is a ****ing beautiful draft for Tennessee. I'd be slightly disappointed if Elam goes a couple picks ahead of ours, but fortifying the trenches will never get a knock from me.

I would be pissed if the Colts passed up Mingo. He is the perfect replacement for Freeney who will be leaving.

If you ask the Jets, they'll tell you that their biggest need is QB. With that being said, Tyler Wilson is sitting right there.

Also, the Jets D played pretty well. They were second in the league against the pass despite not having a pass rusher. I agree though that we need a pass rusher but if Wilson is on the board, we have to take him.

Van Noy is certainly an interesting pick for the Ravens in the first round. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it but I'd rather they go with Mingo if he's on the board. ILB is a need but I think adding another pass-rusher would be more important if/when Kruger leaves in free agency. That would leave Suggs as the only real pass-rusher on the team and even he can't do it alone. Williams is a pretty nice pick in the second round.

For the Saints, DT is not a bigger need for the Saints than DE. Will Smith will be gone, and the Saints desperately need to improve their pass rush.
