What an incredible performance by the Ravens. I was so jacked up after the game yesterday, what an awesome way to spend the evening. Double overtime, playoffs, two legends facing off...Just amazing in every way.

So how about Chykie starting over Jimmy? I was thinking Jimmy was hurt til I saw him as the gunner on punt team.

Jimmy Smith needs to move to safety this offseason.

Idk what smith deal is. He showed A ton of promise last year. This year he hasn't. I heard on the radio that his work ethic is questionable. Also all the zone peas runs isnt helping at all.

Aside from his size he's not a fit at safety. It just doesn't mesh with his skills. Smith's much better suited to playing press-man coverage (which isn't a shocker if you watched him at Colorado) and Pees calls a lot of off-man and zone coverage plays. That kind of sums up the mentality of his defensive scheme. It seems to be working right now but I'm worried about Brady tearing that kind of coverage up next week (again).
It looks like Smith is the 4th CB right now behind Williams, Brown, and Graham. The groin injury he had a little while back probably pushed him down the depth chart and with the way the other three are playing there's no reason to put Smith back in yet. I'm not particularly worried about him yet and I definitely hope the team doesn't invest any quality assets into the position this off-season. There are just too many other pressing needs.

You guys know that I'm opposed to giving coordinators too much credit or too much blame but it's hard not to be pleased with the job Caldwell has done thus far.

Yeah I admit I am the prime example of bashing coordinators too much but he has implemented a great system for Flacco. I tihnk it will only improve into next season. Plus w/ that Indy clusterfuck he had I hope he doesnt get any HC offers soon.

I loved the mix of different plays he had in that last game. He used both TEs, worked Boldin nicely, used Leach in the flats, and shot the deep ball. Oh yeah, he also ran the football! Rice and Pierce get the ball plenty now and it lets the play action game actually work which lets Torrey and Jones go deep.
Giving Joe legit deep speed WRs to pair with his arm is beautiful. This is what the team has tried to do in years past when they brought in Stallworth and Evans in the past couple years. Those guys would have been significant if not for injuries that derailed their seasons. With Torrey and Jones, Joe can attack defenses.

Yeah Caldwell has been doing pretty well lately. I think it was more a fault of the execution in the first Denver game and in the Cincinnati game they rested a lot of starters so that's not a good example to go off of. Other than those two games the offense has looked a lot better and a bit more diverse with the short/intermediate middle area of the field actually being used in the passing game. Ironically they've actually seemed to be more explosive without Cameron too. I thought that was the point of his offense...

Congrats gents!
As much as I hate the Ravens, I greatly respect them too and I'm glad Ray Lewis will get the chance to retire with a second ring. Few players have been as great and as dominant as him, so he definitely deserves it.
Also, the team itself deserves it. You've had some tough losses recently in the playoffs (vs. us, teehee!), but you're consistently good and play hard.
So enjoy it! It's even sweeter than you eliminated the Patriots, as I hate them more than any other team. Hopefully you'll win, because I don't ever want to root for the Ravens in the playoffs again, haha.

What an amazing game.
There must be something wrong with me, when I can be THAT nervous when we are up by 3 scores with 6.34 minutes left in the game. After the first half I really thought Patriots would take this one. The play with Mallet forcing us to take a timeout, their conversion on a direct snap to Woodhead and their TD to Welker, where they fooled us with motions. It looked like they had the upper hand, but we turned it around in the second half with a more aggresive offense, which created room for the running game. And we got that huge turnover forced by Pollard, and an interception after another tipped ball.
Seems like I have to wait another 2 weeks before going all in on free agency and the draft, but heck, I don't mind :)
Harbowl is going to be absolutely awesome

I wonder if we see Chykie back outside in nickel or if it'll be Jimmy. They pulled Chykie after he blew his assignment on that Welker TD and Jimmy came in played very well. Will be interesting to see what happens with that. Kinda like Jimmy's size and physicality vs. Moss and Crabs though I'd guess Chykie gets the go ahead.

Ravens grabbed Juan Castillo to be the run game coordinator for next year. Solid addition to the team and a good coach overall. He had offers at other places but chose us.

Jimmy Smith was actually pulled as well after a failed coverage, so he wasn't perfect neither :)
I assume the coaching staff will continue to give them both playing time, but it will not be as much as in the AFCCG. We played alot of nickelpackages in that game, but with 49'ers using less 3 wideout sets, Graham will most likely take the spot opposite Williams, while Upshaw will see more playing time in an attempt to stop the run and Kaerpernick from going to the outside.

Indeed a solid addition, as long as he doesn't use it as a shortcut for our DC-job :)
Hopefully he can tweak our overall running game to be more consistent, than it have been this year. Also he has to figure out how to get the most out of our backs in Rice and Pierce who have different runningstyles.
It would be nice with some additions to our defense coaching staff as well. Even though Dean/darth Pees turned our D around in the last part of the season, we are still depleted after the departure of several coordinators these last couple of offseasons.

The other atypical substitution was the alternation of Smith and Brown as outside corner in the nickel. They alternated every other series or so with Brown accumulating 41 snaps to 36 by Smith. Brown missed a tackle on Lloyd (Q4, 13:17) which resulted in 7 YAC. He and Graham also miscommunicated their assignments on the Patriots only TD (Q2, 4:22), leaving Welker wide open for the score. Smith wasn’t beaten for any big YAC plays, but he may have had a chance for a PD on Hernandez’ 8-yard catch (Q1, 3:57) which was followed up by Lewis’ helmet-to-helmet hit.
|
I don't think either of them were pulled specifically for missed assignments. Smith is such an enigma right now. He usually gives up the least separation from receivers out of any of the CBs active right now but he's susceptible to double moves too.

Okay, I just assumed Smith got pulled as well, as I saw them change a lot.
Smith lacks some technique when he turns with the receiver, but I mostly believe it is mental lapses. They can be difficult to correct though. The problem with Smith is, that he is in a system that should fit him, so we can't blame the defensive scheme. The only other option I see is having him play press coverage and then release the receiver while dropping to his zone, but that rarely works in NFL today with so many wide receiver/tight end sets with seam routes that keep the centerfielder within the hash marks.

That's highly debatable. Smith is best as a press-man corner and Pees has used a ton of off-man coverage this season. That's pretty much what his defensive mindset is - let them have the small gains but do whatever you can to prevent the big play. I don't think there has been all that much zone coverage either but I'm not entirely sure about that.
