Ugh....Hope hes wrong
I don't even see how he returns, let alone starts. It's just a huge waste of money in an off-season where we need as much money as we can. We can drop him to pick up some depth at SLB or LE.

Yeah Jerry is going to be in a tough position with Free. Do you keep him another year and pay him $9M? That's nearly $6M more than he paid him last season. Or does Jerry cut Free which would cost $2M over the next 3 years, totaling $6M? Pay him $9M in 2013 or pay him $6M to walk away free? I don't know what's going to happen there, but if they keep him, do you think they could move him to Guard?

Been hearing they might attempt some type of restructuring/pay cut as well. Problem is his contract lasts all the way until 2016 restructuring is only going to make the end of that contract even worse than it already is.

IF they can restructure, having him as your swing OT isn't that bad of a situation.

He can't be the answer in 2013, if they can restructure, fine, good depth. He might benefit from time on the bench. He's clearly a guy who got his money and didn't work as hard afterwards. Maybe this will motivate him a bit.

With a decent o-line this team can score 30 a game at will, which is what you need nowadays to win.

What would get him to restructure? Leverage is on his side. Keep me for $9m or cut me and give me $6m to walk away.

IF we could restructure his deal over 3 years and he be our swing tackle for the next 3 years, yes you could do that.

I actually think the better option would be to cut him; I'm just saying that if you want to lessen the hit and keep him, it can be done.

I'm feeling the same way. As bad as he played in 2012 on top of being bad in 2011 he shouldn't be on the roster in 2013. It was like having 4 linemen this past season, so his ass should be gone regardless of money.

Why would he restructure and take less years than he already has?

He has 4 years left on his current deal:

Last season: 2012 Base $1,200,000 Bonus $2,060,000 Cap Hit $3,260,000

2013 Base $7,000,000 Bonus $2,060,000 Cap Hit $9,060,000
2014 Base $8,000,000 Bonus $2,060,000 Cap Hit $10,060,000
2015 Base $8,000,000 Bonus $2,060,000 Cap Hit $10,060,000
2016 Base $8,000,000 Bonus $0 Cap Hit $8,000,000

How do you restructure that to make Free take less money in 2013 and pay him more overall? ....and it still make sense for us?

2016, he has no leverage - easy cut year, but what about '13, '14 and '15?

I'm thinking we may bite the bullet one more season with Free (kinda how we bit it with Newman), hope he bounces back at RT or try to salvage him at OG.

We can thank the Bucs for this one, they were after him pretty hard and drove the price up. We had no choice to resign him because of the youth movement across the line and lack of depth at tackle. At that time he looked like he had a bright future but as we all know has really regressed.

*edit- Interesting enough Ryan Diem, the player Free was compared to coming out of Northern Illinois, was able to salvage his career at guard after a promising start of his career at tackle. Similar size and athleticism so it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

I'd be interested to see if the team drafted a safety high if Sensabaugh would become expendable. His numbers aren't cap crippling if he is cut and could free money down the road.

Base Signing Bonus Cap Hit
2013 3,000,000 750,000 - 3,750,000
2014 4,000,000 750,000 - 4,750,000
2015 4,000,000 750,000 - 4,750,000
2016 6,500,000 - - 6,500,00

Free isn't strong enough to play guard or center...linemen aren't just interchangeable like that. He's a good(or was) tackle because of his footwork and long arms. No way he can get his strength where it needs to be to push 360 pound linemen back off the line.

He's either a tackle or off the roster....sadly.

I dunno how true that is. I've seen plenty of interchangeability among O-lineman. Depends on the player. We see it happen a lot. But you're right about that being a question mark for a guy like Free. He's not exactly Leonard Davis. His footwork and long arms shouldn't hurt him. Strength is the biggest question mark, but he won't have to face many 360 pound lineman. Holy hell that's huge!

Thought I'd toss it out there as an option for him to test out at IF we HAVE TO keep him.

@VL_theLibra: @BryanBroaddus @zlindauer think free is asked to restructure contract? Have built in way to get money from it.

Interesting Broaddus notes they already have a built in way to get money from it.

Broaddus has also touched on his thoughts on the possibility of moving Free inside...he noted that Free was too light in the pants to move inside and after watching him all season get bull rushed into the QB without the ability to consistantly anchor....I'd have to agree with him. I remember when Free was a rookie we had him playing OG in training camp and the reports weren't very positive then either. Not enough girth.

What does that mean? "Have a built in way to get money from it"?

Maybe there is performance based or incentive escalators like number of starts that can be subtracted from the base salary.

I didn't like the Kiffin hire either... but what the heck do I know?

All I'm gonna do is hope for the best. Not sure how difficult a transition this will be for our players. Hope they're up for it.

I am too afraid that Free is gonna be the guy that sucks really bad but we keep on the team a year or two too long ie Roy Williams(both of them sadly), Alan Ball, Kevin Ogletree so on and so forth.

But if we are to talk about interior offensive lineman a guy to keep in the back of your head is Ronald Leary who we are supposedly high on:

Quote:
We have some random thoughts following the Cowboys' 34-31 overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday and heading into the regular-season finale:

1. Last weekend, the Cowboys prevented another NFL team from signing guard Ronald Leary off their practice squad roster. Leary was elevated to the active roster and while he was inactive for the Saints game Sunday this moves tells you plenty about his future. The Cowboys value Leary because of his progression at guard. He came in with concerns about his knee, which doesn't seem to be an issue right now. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan said Leary has gotten better from when he first arrived at Valley Ranch as an undrafted free agent from Memphis. If the Cowboys want to go in another direction at center -- Phil Costa endured health problems in 2012 -- maybe Mackenzy Bernadeau moves from right guard in 2013. Leary could compete for that spot along with Kevin Kowalski. Of course this all changes should the Cowboys draft a center. Given the money spent in free agency on Nate Livings and Bernadeau this past offseason, at least $30 million combined, it's doubtful if the Cowboys want another free-agent guard. Maybe Leary is the answer.

After the draft it was reported we had a third round grade on him but his knee concerns made him fall out of the draft but supposedly it's not an issue now. He was running with the first team offense back in June and a lot of teams had him pegged as a starter if the mircro fracture surgery questions weren't there.

I would at least want it to be an open competition and let him get a look there because if he's healthy he might be a find.

Offensive line sex wish list:

Tyron - Chance Warmack - Barret Jones - Ronald Leary - Jeremy Parnell

:D
