Their DL philosophy is different from most teams. They ask those 3 bulky DTs up front to stuff the running lanes and push the pocket. They're not asked to rush the passer, their job is to occupy linemen.
Then they line up their pass rushing End wide 9, and his job is to rush the passer all 3 downs. He isn't asked to play the run. So his job is outside pass rush at all costs.
So they generate rush on 1 side from the wide 9 end, they stuff the run with the other 3 and generally destroy the strong side running game with their bulk up front, and if they want to generate pressure on the opposite end of the wide 9 rusher, they'll use a lot of games to create pressure on the other side, or a blitzing DB or backer. That's why Hill is so valuable to them.
They have a very unique philosophy on defense as far as their pass rush is concerned.
