I don't know about you guys but I've been dying for a play-making safety for years and years. I think with us switching to the Tampa-2, we need one now more than ever. I doubt that we will draft a S in the first round, because of the 1st and 2nd round investment we put into Mo last year, but am thinking will get one in the 2nd or 3rd.

Here is how Walterfootball.com has the Safety position ranked and (projected round):

1.) Kenny Vacarro- Texas (1-2)
2.) Matt Elam- Florida (1-2)
3.) Tony Jefferson- OU (2-3)
4.) Eric Reid- LSU (2-3)
5.) TJ McDonald- USC (2-3)
6.) Robert Lester- Roll Tide (2-3)
7.) Bacarri Rambo- Georgia (2-3)
8.) Shawn Williams- Georgia (2-3)
9.) Kenny Ladler- Vanderbilt (2-4)
10) Duke Williams- Nevada (2-4)

Kiper's Top 4 are identical, with Philip Thomas coming in at the 5th spot.

Deep class, no doubt. Any of those guys could give us fans hope. Some will pan out, some will be mediocre and some will bust. Good luck to the Cowboys.

I gotta say, my pet cat right now is Tony Jefferson. I think taking him in the 2nd would be great for Dallas. He is a sure tackler, can be intimidating across the middle, does well in coverage, and plays a lot bigger than his size.

I liked him this year, but he sure got worked over against A&M.

I'm wondering if Patrick Chung would make some sense for us this year. I thought he would have been a perfect cover 2 Safety and if not for injuries he probably wouldn't be hitting the market. One impact guy back there makes Sensy not so bad.

Jay Ratliff was arressted for DWI..... I'm guessing this may add to us looking into more DL in the first round.

Not a bad call. He has missed like 12 out of the last 32 games but I could see him rebounding and showing some glimpses of 2010.

Certainly not a bad idea although I'm not excited at all with the prospect of playing Barry Church at FS in cover 2. I'd much rather slide him over to SS and get a real FS.

Some names that make sense for us.

Quote:
keep an eye on Florida International’s Jonathan Cyprien but Fresno State’s Phillip Thomas as well. Been talking to plenty of scouts that feel like that this is a deeper draft when he comes to the safety position. The Cowboys will be looking at this spot in the draft for potentially that fourth guy to go along with Gerald Sensabaugh, Barry Church and Matt Johnson or they could be trying to address the position for a starter next to Church who I feel is more in the role of what John Lynch use to be for Monte Kiffin.

San Jose State guard David Quessenbery has now become a player on my radar when it comes to possible guards that could be considered in the middle of this draft. He showed strength and mobility in the reps that he took. Looking forward to the battle between Quessenberry and John Warford with John Jenkins of Georgia. Warford is still my favorite guard here at the practices but Quessenberry needs some study when I return to Valley Ranch.

The Cowboys will most likely be in the market when it comes to tight ends because John Phillips is an unrestricted free agent. Scouts rave about Vance McDonald of Rice and I understand why. He does a nice job of getting up the field and in drills showed the ability to catch the ball on the move. Had some positive snaps as a blocker when the ball was run to his side. When talking about blockers, Kyle Juszczyk of Harvard has shown up well. Juszczyk plays as a fullback and not only blocks well at the point of attack but has soft hands to adjust in the flat. Really like the way he is steady in the way he goes about his business.

More names to watch

· Thought that Missouri Southern defensive tackle Brandon Williams had a much better day in the one-on-one drills and when they went to the inside drill. There have been times in these practices where he didn’t win right off the snap and struggled with his technique getting off of blocks. This morning he played with quickness and a burst but even better was his hand use with a quick swim move. There is no question of his power and strength but the fact that he should some pass rush moves really opened my eyes.

· One of my five to watch today was Syracuse offensive tackle Justin Pugh. Like the fact that he can play both tackle and guard but does it with some ability. He is right at 6-5, 301, which would make him an idea height/weight for offensive tackle. Is a short armed player which could limited him some outside but was really impressed with his ability to get outside, stay on his feet and engage with the defender. Played on both the right and left side this morning. Was a little off balance on his cut off block but was able to recover. Like a lot of these Senior Bowl linemen, you see him trying to finish his blocks. I have talked to scouts here that really are looking for those linemen that can play multiple positions to try and help with numbers on the roster, Pugh will get consideration not only for this but the way in which he competes.

· One of my favorite players on the North defense has been Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant but there is also another PAC 12 player that is catching my eye and that is defensive end Datone Jones from UCLA. At 6-4, 280 he has the size to play as a 4-3 end with the burst to get up the field and be disruptive run or pass in this scheme. I really have enjoyed the match ups between he and Eric Fisher which I think has rubbed off on Alex Okafor who switched sides today to get some snaps against Fisher as well. On Saturday, these North ends will be a handful for South tackles Lane Johnson and Xavier Nixon. Jones has been relentless not only chasing the ball but handling blocks at him as well. His get off has put these tackles on their heels which has allowed him to counter their sets. From the word “Go” he has challenged Fisher with everything that he has got and come away with a favorable impression from the scouts.

· There were some coverage situations that USC safety TJ McDonald was put in that really caused me to think about if he can handle the job down after down. There is no question about his ability as a box or down safety but this morning he was much too slow reacting to the receiver and when he did see the route develop that he wasn’t quick enough reacting to the ball. There didn’t seem to be any problem with his ability to handle the tight end underneath but when the receiver went vertical on him, I didn’t see the quickness or the catch up speed to recover. There will be those comparisons to Taylor Mays of the Bengals but he doesn’t struggle that much. I have made a note to ask Monte Kiffin his thoughts on McDonald when I get back to Valley Ranch but I did see a couple of plays that were not his best effort of the week.

Cyprien! Stole the name right out of my offseason mock. He's a leveler. Great tackler... and a big hitter... 2 key traits for a Tampa 2 Safety. I noticed FIU free lances him quite a bit... putting him up in the box or dialed up to blitz... he's a guy that's everywhere.

Cyprien is my #2 safety at this point...love what I see in his game

Top safeties right now

1. Kenny Vaccaro (Texas)
2. Johnathan Cyprien (Florida International)
3. Phillip Thomas (Fresno State)
4. Duke Williams (Nevada)
5. Eric Reid (Louisiana State)

Thing about him is he's made a name for himself at the Senior Bowl... but I think the hype will die down a bit. I see him as a 3rd round, maybe 4th round guy. His combine numbers could tell the difference, whether he keeps the current hype or not. Current hype has you believing he's a 2nd rounder. But I think when teams go back to look a the tape, they'll consider the level of competition, question his deep coverage, since he was asked to play mainly in the box, and if they think he's just a SS, then the hype will subside a little especially with the deep class of safety prospects. Some teams will go for the safer guy, some will take the risk. It's all yet to be seen. For the Cowboys, I think we have room to add a safety at either FS or SS.

For the Cowboys, I think we have room to add a safety at either FS or SS.
he did have a good game against louisville though, i don't see him cracking round 2 b/c the safety class is so deep, but i don't think he makes out of the 4th

Agreed. If I had to guess right now, I'd say mid 3rd to mid 4th.

What do you think of him for us?

Thats being shot down here in OK. In other news, Matt Mosley ‏@mattmosley
All indications are that Jay Ratliff will remain with the Cowboys in 2013. At least that's what I was told today.

he does remind me a bernard pollard, i think he would be a great ss for a team that likes to play cover 2.

only problem is sensabaugh and church are both ss and i really don't know what to think of johnson considering he didn't play a lick b/c of injuries.

i guy i really like for us would be jj wilcox he was corner who moved to safety this year, i know he's a small school prospect like johnson, but if we keep sensabaugh i would rather him be the ss where he's a better fit and find someone else who can play the post safety when we put 8 in the box

Thing is we all know both of our safety positions are big concerns. I'm not even sure Sensy is kept. If he is, he'll likely stay at FS. Church will get first nod at SS. He just got a new contract, but it's a reasonably priced deal that isn't the kind of money that you would say locks him in as a starter (he'll count $800K against the cap next season). Johnson is a total question mark.

I would love to see Ed Reed finish his career in dallas. Best case scenario right there.

Even if there were rumors about that, I bet he would use us like Ray Lewis used us. For bargaining power to get Baltimore to pay him more. lol. I don't think he'll play for another team. It's hard to believe.

I don't think Ed can run anymore.
