is UMD leaving or staying?
does that determine open season on ACC?

UMD is gone. Clemson and FSU are waiting to see what happens with the lawsuit between UMD and the ACC to get an idea of what to expect to pay to get out then are likely B12 bound.

The ACC's divisional alignment is painfully stupid.
-Pittsburgh in a different division than Boston College and Syracuse
-Florida State and Miami in different divisions
-The four Carolina schools split in half
-Absolutely no geographic or competitive sense to it at all
It's like they put 14 names in a hat and just drew them out. It's worse than that, really.

The old ACC was set up well. They had cross division rivals (Florida State-Miami, Clemson-Georgia Tech) so it worked out fine. But with the addition of the new teams and the loss of others, it's a mess.

Cross-division rivalries are dumb anyway. If the most important games are divisional (they are) you should try to put as many rivals in the same division as you can. This is what the Big Ten is thankfully doing with their new divisions.

There is really no easy way to break up the ACC and have any semblance of competitive balance.

VT and FSU are the two best programs, so start off by putting them in separate divisions. Then add UVA and Miami to go along with their state programs. Louisville and Clemson are really the only other programs worth a damn, so split those two and add in the rest based on geography. Boom.
-Virginia Tech
-Louisville
-Pittsburgh
-UVA
-Boston College
-Syracuse
-Georgia Tech
-Florida State
-Clemson
-Miami
-Four North Carolina schools
I guess Georgia Tech wouldn't like this, but otherwise I don't see the problem. If you're really concerned about FSU, Miami, and Clemson being too good (you shouldn't, because it's not true), then swap Miami and GT

Yeah GT would hate that. Any way you slice it someone is screwed geographically. That said when FSU and Clemson leave the conference...
Division 1:
VT
BC
Syracuse
Pitt
Louisville
Virginia
Division 2:
Miami
Georgia Tech
UNC
Duke
NC State
Wake Forest

Miami is already geographically isolated. Mine at least makes geographic sense otherwise.
I mean, really, if anyone could explain why Pittsburgh needs to be in a separate division from Boston College and Syracuse....that makes absolutely no sense at all.

Rumor that UNC already has an offer from the B1G and if they go UVA might follow.

UNC would make me happy. And I'd rather have Virginia than Georgia Tech but I understand why GT is so appealing being in Atlanta. I feel like they want UNC and Virginia, and GT is the backup plan to missing out on UNC.

Looks like Apalachian State is joining the Sun Belt.

George Mason is A10 bound. Poor babies should have made the jump once VCU did.

The new Conference should just be called Conference USA 2.0. And Conference USA should change their name to Sun Belt 2.0.
Central Florida, East Carolina, Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa, SMU, and Houston are all going to Conference (Insert Name).
FAU, FIA, MTSU, North Texas, and Western Kentucky are all moving from the Sun Belt to the Conference USA.

Old Big East is now called American Athletic Conference.

Apparently FSU and the B1G have been staying in contact about a move. FSU needs to get AAU membership but if Nebraska did FSU can as well. FSU would get a huge academic benefit while bringing an elite athletics program and lots more viewers to the B1G.

I'd be cool with it. FSU can definitely bring up their academic standards. With a state as populous as Florida, there are no shortage of students, and changing curricula and starting research programs isn't a very painful endeavor.
Plenty of schools elevate their academic profiles in just a few years without huge athletic departments to fund them.

The move makes sense for all involved. That said the FSU baseball team would just be absurd in the B1G. Basketball would be screwed as it would be post Wiggins. Football would introduce a different breed of speed to the conference. Track would not even be fair.
Women's sports would be an interesting fit as well.

If Florida State wants to elevate their academics, they should do what UF does. Deny admission to a bunch of very well qualified applicants to give your school the illusion of exclusivity.

The FSU speed thing is a joke. Top 5 to top 10 classes every year for OSU and UM. There is no speed difference.
