I think a lot of the critical acclaim for Girls is similar to why ***** as Folk (american) got so much praise. A real show about modern women for modern women that doesn't pander and is realistic.

Relating it to ***** as Folk relates to a college class I took, Mass Media. It was taught by a chest beating homosexual male comm professor. He basically took all semester talking about how QAF is the greatest show this and that and almost single handedly was taking the *** rights movement ahead etc.

So we are made to watch the show during a class period. (we were given the option to opt out) Considering his position, he sure picked the wrong episode. The melodrama was so thick I cut it with a knife. The characters were so stereotypical, as a straight guy I was offended. It was pure derivative drivel. So friend Brandon proceeds to get on a soapbox and iterate these points... and amazingly fails the class.

It wasn't his son, Brandon Sanderson finished the Wheel of Time series. And I haven't finished it but I have heard he did a great job so you're right about that my good man.

I don't remember Arrested Development being less funny in the beginning. If anything, I thought the first season was probably better than the third.
