Here is a decent assessment of Brewer from
http://www.giants101.com/2013/02/18/...akout-in-2013/

Quote:
Tackle, James Brewer: One way or another, Brewer is going to find himself to be a valuable asset in 2013. David Diehl at right tackle is anything but a certainty at this point, even if the team does hang onto him and his large salary. Meanwhile, on the other side of the line, the team doesn't really have a suitable backup for Will Beatty (assuming they're able to re-sign him or place the franchise tag on him). Whether he ends up starting or not, Brewer will have plenty of opportunities to prove his worth this coming season and we here at Giants 101 feel he's going to open some eyes.

That's a fair take on Brewer. This is a big year for him. At the very least, he needs to show a strong camp and PS to stick around as a depth guy.

It is certainly going to be a key offseason for Brewer. It really is becoming crunch time to realise that potential.

interesting snippet from big blue view about Brewer that I didn't realise:
Quote:
People often mention James Brewer as the replacement at right tackle but I saw a tweet from one of the beat reporters towards the end of the season (and I can't remember who or find the tweet) that mentioned that the Giants were playing Brewer more at guard in practice.
Perhaps Brewer could be in the mix at left guard as well.

My guess is they hope Mosely will be our future LG.

My concern with Brewer is he's a waist bender. He really hasn't impressed me every time Ive seen him play. He seems like a JAG.

Hmmm. We need to investigate to see if he ever posted during Giants games. You might be onto something.

I haven't seen much on Brewer, certainly not enough to make comment.

I have been going by what Reese etc have been saying about him, they have been reasonably positive about him, but thinking on it, I think they have been expecting to see a little more from Brewer at this point.

I'm judging him based on what I saw in the preseason. He just didn't look good to me. I know the sample size is limited but he just didn't look all that great to me.

I never realized Beatty will be turning 28 before the season even starts. He hasn't started a full season yet, however he played well when DD got hurt. Also, now he happens to be a FA, and due a lot of money.

Something annoys me of a 28 year old tackle getting a shot and paid. Can't we develop or draft and start a OT from day 1? So basically one more contract for Beatty before he gets mid 30s and old.

I really want us to draft a young OL player and play him from damn day 1. Make use of his shelf life, assuming no injuries of course. 28 years old and NOW he is about to a full time starter. What the heck...

Age is an issue, but you have to consider our window. We should get 3-4 good years from Beatty, provided he can stay relatively healthy.

Eli is 32, so in 3 to 4 seasons he will be 35/36.

I'd rather go with an established vet rather than going through the learning curve if a new blindside protector.

Terrell Thomas has said he thinks this will be Coughlin's last season.

If we assume just for fun it was true, who do you see as realistic options to replace him?
Bill Cowher, Lovie Smith, Perry Fewell, Kevin Gilbride, Steve Spagnuolo? Someone else?

Mara came out and said NYG won't likely be using franchise tags this year.

This could mean we want Phillips, Bennett and Beatty back at the right price ànd are willing to risk losing them to cashed up teams; or maybe we have potential deals in place and we are waiting to announce them.

I want a defensive coach. I'm tired of the musical chairs on defense. A defensive coach brings stability to our defense.

And our offense will be stable with Eli. As long as he's our qb, you don't have to worry about stability on offense. He is the offense.

So when TC hangs it up, I'd prefer a defensive guy. I'd be happy with Sullivan though. But I want defense.

I don't want an established vet. The benefits are good that the guy has been in the league, but I want a franchise OT where we can plug and play. I want to get the most out of his shelf life as a player too.

Something annoying of having a 28 year old LT who has yet to play a full season as a starter. On top of that because of his shelf life wasted, he is now a FA. So we have to pay him big bucks at 28. He has played well last season, but long term he is still unproven in some regards.

Ideally, I'd like us to save that money, and draft a LT, where we can play him from day 1. Plug and play and not worry about it. Obviously, that's best case for me if not, then investing in Beatty is fine. It's just annoys me how players get developed so slowly for us.

You better make sure he is a TOP notch defensive mind. Last thing we want is a terrible DC, made HC, unless he totally washes his hands of it all. If that happens then fine by me.

That's the mind set that bothers me regarding Eli. Don't worry about WRs, OL, RB, and whatever else. Eli will save us. Then when things are a mess offensively, people pile on Eli. It seemed Giants fan were shocked that Eli couldn't bail us out. Some even more shocked, that he struggled at times as did a lot of others on offense.

Defensive coach would be good in that sense the musical chairs would finally end. That would FINALLY be great! I actually might.. just might, respect that side of the ball again. Right now it's a gangrenous limp that just is infected and has no use.

The trend in the league is offensive coaches though. So be ready for that trend to continue. Lovie Smith got pushed out for a offensive HC, and he hasn't found a DC spot. Kelly is a creative offensive coach, and now has the Eagles job. So I expect it to be offensive HC. Be prepared for that to still continue

As for Cowher, I don't want him unless Dick LeBeau comes with him. Then it would be amazing!

I hope it wouldn't be Cowher. Overrated coach and he hasn't been in the game for way to long now. I would hate that hire.

We won 2 Super Bowls trusting Eli to make it work. Shush you. Enjoy your mid round OL pick.

Bc the rest of the draft belongs to defense.

I don't want Cowher either. I think he's been out of the game for too long. I also agree that he's overrated.

And he just doesn't make sense. He's a 3-4 guy. His principles are somewhat dated, and he already won a SB. We all know the SB curse. No coach in NFL history has won a SB with 2 different teams.

It's impossible for us to really talk about coaches bc 90% of their work goes on behind the scenes and we don't know anything about it as fans, but ideally I want a defensive guy who runs an aggressive 4-3 defense who is also a great leader, motivator, and developer of talent.

Coughlin's best asset that goes overlooked is his ability to develop young talent. That's critical.

Bc the rest of the draft belongs to defense.
And he did. But eventually, it won't last. When it does let's not make such a bad error that we break the guy because we keep adding to the defense, and letting people on offense go. I hope Cruz can be re-signed. MB too! Everyone else on offense can leave. No more Beckum, Barden, and Hixon. Thanks for your services but we will go in a different direction. Big Butt boothe I don't mind leaving, and I would rather draft and plug and play a LT like a Johnson or Fischer. Realistically, I think we do go after beatty. Maybe we can low ball him. If he asks for too much, he and his detached retina can go to another team.

Defense will always be 2nd rate. And when it thinks it has a shot as being first, the league will change the rules to favor my side of the ball. : )

I mean...we're kind of loaded on offense (especially compared to defense) so it's not like we're leaving Eli with the Rams supporting cast on offense or anything.

Sign back Cruz, Nicks, and Bennett. Sign back Beatty. There. That's 4 FA moves for offense. That's enough for now.

Then in the draft we retool an old, complacent, and stale defense with young talent. And we let it develop, and we make another run. Eli has one more championship run left in him. We have to do what's best for the entire team and our chance of making 1 more run with him. Don't worry about your stats, and all that ********. Care about Super Bowls. We need to retool this defense.

Eli will make it work on offense.

Ideally I would like a younger coach to replace Coughlin if he retired

I think my first Choice would be Lovie Smith
he knows great defense. We could keep Gilbride and his well established (and potent) offense (the achilles heel of Smith in Chicago). I'd be ok if we kept Fewell under Smith, they have worked well together in the past.
