Yep. This can and has been done. In some cases, it's worked out very badly for the team. Some players just hold out or threaten to hold out once the big money portion of the contract is over with.
I'm in the "you're gonna have a bad time" camp.

It's not something I've thought in depth about it in terms of pros/cons, but it was an idea that crossed my mind.

Regarding that idea of front loading a contract, im going to use the Browns as an example. With over $50m in cap room, they could easily go after Ravens QB Joe Flacco if the Ravens put the non-exclusive franchise tag on him. Browns could make an offer that Flacco and his agent would accept but the Ravens wouldnt be able to match because its front loaded for the first season (2013). Browns could easily pull that off and add a top tier WR like Mike Wallace. Imagine that.
Browns could give the guaranteed money this year with average base salaries throughout the rest of the contract. This way, they would avoid cap hell since all the guaranteed money would have already been paid plus if either or both were to decline or whatnot, the team could release either or both after 2013 (or whenever) and not take any cap penalties because all the guaranteed money has already been paid.
I must admit that im watching what happens with Flacco. If the Ravens cant reach a long term deal with him, they will have to franchise tag him but if they use the non-exclusive version, a team like the Browns could easily offer a contract that the Ravens wouldnt be able to match but give up two first round draft picks in exchange. Depending what happens, this could get very interesting.

Dan, maybe I'm missing something but I think Mort said he expects a deal done this weekend.
And I can't imagine them not tagging him on the exclusive rights tag for the reason you just mapped out and how he kinda won the SB.

Teams have done that, but what happens is players seem to forget about the money already paid to them and start asking for a new contract when they see how little they are making in the future years. Not saying that would happen all the time but its a potential issue.
Monomach, any ideas about the Raiola and Burleson restructures?

Heard Raiola's restructure saved 2m, but it was just one kind of crappy source. Haven't found anything at all about the numbers on Burleson's yet.

True but you have to admit that if Flacco was to get the non-exclusive tag, it would be interesting to see if any team makes him an offer that the Ravens wouldnt be able to match.

Why would the Ravens use the non-exclusive tag on Flacco?

No one knows. Florio's been bringing it up in every Flacco article for some reason, so people keep talking about it. Ozzie Newsome's way too smart to just hand him to the Browns like that.

I don't remember which of the sundry podcasts I listen to brought this up, but it boiled down to (iirc) that the exclusive rights tag locked them into a certain cap number for 2013 that was very team-unfriendly. The non-exclusive tag would let them make a team friendly contract so they'd actually have money to put someone other than Flacco on the field.
They basically said the Ravens screwed the pooch waiting this long and now they're stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I suspect the style of tag used is going to depend heavily on Flacco. If he says he's willing to give a "discount" to stay in Baltimore and work with them on a contract that's good for everyone, he'll be non-exclusive. If he's all show me the money he'll be exclusive tagged and the Ravens will just deal with it.

When's the deadline for the tag, next week right? Not a chance Flacco isn't tagged if no deal has been reached, and if there's a tag the Ravens are hamstrung on the cap with their other FA's.
I think they'll come to terms on a deal within the next week.

The deadline for franchise tags is Monday March 4th at 4pm EST. It's definitely interesting because at the exclusive level, Flacco would get more than $80m over three years if he's tagged at the exclusive level. Basically, all the leverage is in Flacco's corner and I wouldnt be surprised if he used it to the best deal he can possibly get. After all, in a business where no player's job is guaranteed, when you have a chance to break the bank, you take it because you may never ever get another chance at doing so.

It saves them $10,000,000 and is Joe Flacco REALLY worth 2 first round picks on top of paying him top 5 QB money. I say hell no.

Some team would do it, no doubt in my mind. CLE would, they have to get him to sign though.
BAL's arrow is pointing down, if they lose Flacco they go from SB Champs to complete rebuilding. A smart GM wouldn't leave any possible way for him to leave.

I think regardless of what they do with Flacco that they are only a year or two away from being in rebuilding mode anyway. But that also has a ton to do with how well Ozzie drafts also.

How are the Rams going to replace 3 yards per carry without breakaway speed?

Exactly who are they losing that only offers 3 ypc? The Rams are losing 4.1 ypc, excellent blocking, top 5 receiving ability out of the backfield, consistency, and a guy who's had remarkably good health for a RB.
Lot of tread on some very old tires, but he's still very much a positive contributor for the time being. Maybe two years of being good left.

Per PFT: Colston converts $2.8 million of $4.5 million to signing bonus, creating $2.1 million in 2013 cap space for Saints http://bit.ly/VOtO1u

Colston is literally the best thing to ever happen to the Saints. (Besides Brees coming in FA)
