There is a solid component of Seahawks fans that for whatever reason will always say that DE/WR is our #1 need from here to the end of time.
Ansah will likely be gone. But I have a hard time seeing a strict DE being selected in day 1 in the next 5 years. Not that Irvin is the guy to call off that search, but that DEs tend to grow on trees a bit.
Seattle's scheme is just weird as it pertains to DEs. We don't value much of the conventional attributes that make good 4-3 ends. So it doesn't follow that we will ever see a top 20 DE as someone that has the traits we want (outside of pass rush). It also means we get unnatural benefit and value from guys that other teams don't covet.
Even if DE is their top need, our scheme and fit don't require or benefit from taking a round 1 talent. Whether it's at LEO or at our 5. I agree we will take a DE. But it'll be a guy taken in the speed drafting rounds on Saturday that we never heard of.
This year is really deep at DE. Like a good 4-5 rounds deep. I wouldn't doubt for a second that there is a day 3 guy that they like empirically better than Ansah.
