I agree for the most part with your idea that potential is a dangerous thing but this comparison is really dumb.
In the Computer Programming Draft, you would ideally take a guy like John Carmack.

Why do we have scouts anyway when we can just look at production to draft a guy ?

Who spent every minute of his waking life in his teens in front of a computer programming, and then produced several small video games prior to being hired by Softdisk, and then produced tons of stuff for Softdisk before branching off with his friends to form Id.

And he's one of the exceptions to the rule. He's the JPP of computer programming. 90% of the programmers at big-time companies have BS degrees in CS and 60% have Master's degrees or higher.

Exactly by his logic in Brandon Graham and Derrick Morgan should be better players after all they were way more proven on the field in JPP's draft class.

Scouts are still valuable when learning about a guy's character, his motivation, and little aspects of his game on the field that can separate prospects with similar production./

But production should be the #1 determinant of drafting, then scouting reports, then combine performance.

Seriously? Wow. Why would a 1st rounder even do these if he's going to screw them up that badly? Just claim mild injury (or just refuse to participate) and do the interviews.

Brandon Graham and Derrick Morgan were just as productive as JPP in the 2012 season.

Did you know that Brandon Graham was the #2 rated 4-3 DE by profootballfocus.com last year?

It's only been 3 years since the 2010 draft and both Graham and Morgan are coming off injuries. There still is a realistic chance that both turn out to be better players than JPP in the long run.

Look at Shawn Merriman and Demarcus Ware. After the first 3 years, Merriman was clearly the better player. Righ tnow, it's Ware and it's no contest.

I don't 100% agree with Ache, but I do think that numbers (stats, but also combine numbers) are undervalued by a lot of people. Look at Bruce Irvin last year. Good college production. Good triangle numbers. Shane went ballistic when he was a first round pick and everybody on this forum had a good laugh at the Seahawks. Irvin went on to have a pretty decent rookie season. Which is exactly what you would expect if you were just looking at his numbers and watching a few games.

You can't just look at college production when the guy learned football 3 years ago. This is just insane. That's the point.

But why take such a huge risk on him with a valuable first round pick? Why gamble so hard on a 10% payout?

Because you can have a higher prize at the end ? That's the point in anything you want to make profit with. You have to take chance.

Am I confused or is it 2013 right now and 2012 is the most recent NFL season in the books?

I heard that both Derrick Morgan and Brandon Graham were injured with ACL tears in 2010 and rehabbing in 2011. Did I hear right or am I wrong?

Between what I've seen on the field, and what I've seen at the combine, I have no idea why anybody thinks Moore is worthy of a first round pick, let alone a high one.

it doesn't work the same way for QBs. Different position. There, you factor production in with a baseline height/weight and arm strength as well./

But you don't have a higher prize. Your prize is far more likely with a high-production guy than a low-production guy.

Why take a 10% payout when you can have a much higher payout with something else, and the same or even better reward?

He had a productive year at a big football school. You have to wonder how, if he's that slow and weak. Maybe some injury? But why participate in the Combine?

How do you know that ? Because you believe it ?

Are you working with prospects ? Do you scout them for a team ? Are you a GM ? What do you know about prospects ?

How do you know Ansah will give you a 10% payout ? How do you know you will have a higher payout with a better reward ?
