I mean...Chase Daniel is a free agent. So is Brian Hoyer.
I think you can get by just as well with one of those two while you develop a QB

Sometimes the best trade is no trade at all. Just walk away.
Of course, if your goal is being mediocre, then this is a great trade.

Those guys are scrubs, Alex Smith isn't a franchise QB but he is worlds better than them.

What evidence is there that Foles has more upside than Alex Smith? Being young and unproven doesn't automatically mean Foles will be better than Alex Smith.
Maybe Geno Smith will be a great QB, or maybe he'll be the next Alex Smith. Opinions about Geno Smith as a prospect seem quite similar to how Alex was viewed: talented, but not an elite QB prospect.

Ah yes, the "no solution is a solution" answer. How gutsy. NFL teams have to actually make decisions.

Again, being young and unproven doesn't automatically make them better.
Besides, Alex Smith was viewed by an NFL team as worthy of trading for. Daniel and Hoyer were allowed to just walk by their previous teams.

I don't see how anyone, at this stage of his career, can see any upside at all to Alex Smith. So I guess it's pointless to discuss, to be honest. Smith has many years of evidence to support the claim that he is a mediocre QB with a ceiling of "game manager."
The young guys have upside. Alex does not. Therefore, I believe they are better options especially when factoring in their various price tags.

Alex Smith is what he is. He probably won't get better reading defenses, calling plays, and his already average physical skills certainly aren't getting better. Geno Smith and Nick Foles both have superior physical skills. They are 5 or 6 years younger. Anyone who can't see that both of those guys have higher upside than Smith it blind.
Will they reach that potential? I don't know. Will the be better than Alex Smith? Maybe. But if all of you guys who are calling Andy Reid a "QB Guru" let me ask you this. If you think he can get something more from Alex Smith, imagine what he could get from younger guys with higher upside.

...yes...they should have decided to not make a trade if they weren't going to get a good deal...which they didn't.

Exactly what I was referencing to NFL people being cowards.
2011 Matt Cassel stat line looks like Smith circa 2006. Scott Pioli is too pathetic to dump him and maybe try and get Smith then with an offer if the Manning thing drug on.
2011 Mark Sanchez falls on his face to end the season. Give him a contract sweetener.
2 great examples of NFL teams kicking the can down the road because action would of shone light on a failure of your own.

It's honestly weird to me that anyone is arguing this is a good move for the Chiefs. They Chiefs clearly gave up way too much for an average QB. There is literally no way around it. The only way giving up this much makes sense is if he legitimately takes this team anywhere of significance, and that just isn't going to happen.
Reid and Dorsey are gutless cowards. They chose mediocrity over potential greatness. Winning 8 games is not going to inspire anyone. Especially with our cupcake schedule this year.
In the end, Alex Smith will do just enough to ensure the Chiefs miss out on a franchise QB in the upcoming draft, just like Matt Cassel did in 2010. Just like Grbac did. Just like Montana and Trent Green did.
This is not a new story for Chiefs fans. This is literally the history of our franchise, so excuse us if we can't get excited about another retread mediocre QB who will be spinning his wheels.

That's just stupid.
Just because " teams have to actually make decisions" doesn't mean that they have to accept trades that are ultimately bad for the organization.

It seems to only be 49er fans, Brody, and a guy who's never seen a 1st round QB that he didn't like.

Pretty sure it takes balls to trade a second rounder for a guy so many people appear to be down on. And Reid isn't gutless, he wasn't afraid to take McNabb higher than anyone thought he should go several years ago. He just doesn't see it in Geno probably, I don't see what's wrong with that either. He's not that good of a prospect.

It doesn't take balls to trade for another teams backup. It takes the opposite, regardless of the compensation.
And I'm not even talking about Geno. A lot of QBs would have been available there at pick 34. Almost all of them have more upside. They chose the safe route instead of taking a chance. Settling for mediocrity instead of striving for greatness could damn well be the motto for the Chiefs franchise as a whole.

This assumes both that there is a franchise quarterback in this class, and that the Chiefs would have taken him if not for Smith. Two conditions which are in no way certifiable.
I've already stated my belief that it was a vast overpaying for Smith, but lets not act like it was some sure thing that the other options the Chiefs would have pursued would have been any better.

Reid didn't take McNabb higher than anyone thought he should go. McNabb wasn't the least touted of the first-round QBs that year. That's revisionist history.

This is a pet peeve of mine. Most history is "revisionist," that's the point of the field. People use the term as something negative, when its not. Anytime you challenge or argue against a particular historical belief or narrative, you're engaging in "revisionist history," even if you're 100% correct.

Cassel and Smith trades are not the same. The Chiefs are not signing Smith to a long term contract.
