Alex Smith is an established good not great QB. He isn't suddenly going to be amazing at this point. He will never be elite. You need elite QB play to generally win a super bowl. At least Gino Smith has a hope to possible be elite.

I like Smith as a stop gap kinda guy but he just flat out isn't worth the picks they gave up for him. You can spin it as much as you damn well please but the compensation was just too great to not call it trade rape. 2nd rounders bust all the time, but they also produce productive game changers, something Smith will never be.

Edit: I would still take Schaub right now at 31 over Smith in this trade.

Lets say Geno has a 10% of becoming elite, are you putting your chances in on that? Sure he has a chance, but the likelihood that he actually becomes elite is so low that the chiefs felt they had to go with another option. No pick is a guarantee, but you can get much better players than Geno with #1 overall, with much better chances of actually becoming elite.

Putting any kind of %age on any player in the draft or in the NFL is just a waste of time.

That's 10% more chance than Alex Smith has.

10% better than the 0% chance with Alex Smith. Geno would be cheaper to I think. With the new rookie deals the Chiefs wouldn't be as handcuffed like before. They could move on in 3 years if Gino sucked. At least they would have taken a shot for greatness instead of just stetting for being decent.

There just isn't an obvious choice at #1 now and no elite prospects in this draft. If there was a AJ Green or something it would be better but there are no good value/fit picks for the Chiefs at #1. I'd hope they get a reasonable offer and trade down a boy of possible.

The reason why KC fans should be pissed with Alex isn't because he's terrible. Its a sign that KC is settling for mediocrity.

When you hit rock bottom, you want to be the best. You want your team to get a potential top 5 QB, not a guy who's top 15 at best. Alex will be solid for KC. I think you'll see some 2011 and 2012 Alex for them. Low amount of mistakes (generally), efficient play, and has the ability every now and then to take over a game and win it (Saints, Eagles games in 2011). Not always or even consistently can he do that, but occasionally. But there was still plenty to dislike about his play, when you look on the field and ignore stats.

BUT....this is a franchise that hasn't even attempted to find a franchise QB in like 30 years. They keep trading for leftovers. They want hope, the upside of being the best, but they get the reality of settling for slightly above average at his best.

Of course its possible that Alex is the best QB available from the draft+FA. Thats the prevailing thought now. But that doesn't make trading a 2nd and future 3rd the wise move to do. That's a lot of compensation for a 29 year old game manager who happens to be the best QB available in what is one of the weakest QB drafts in years. You want the best of the best, not the best of the worst.

All in all i wouldn't even be surprised if KC goes to the playoffs next year. But i don't think Alex will leave any kind of lasting impression. 1 or 2 solid seasons, a playoff berth, but he probably won't be remembered as a franchise QB. Probably will be the next Steve DeBerg.

Trading a 2nd round pick is a franchise crippling move? I understand people not liking it but that's a bit extreme.

Does ALex Smith have the potential to develop into a Trent Green type QB???

Or is Trent Green's tenure in KC severely underrated??

sighhh.

It isn't just the picks, it's what the trade means. It means they won't draft and develop their own guy this year. And the rumored extension means Alex Smith is the guy for the next 3-4 years. That is the biggest problem.

I'm trying to be optimistic here, I really am. Maybe they have a plan to draft and develop a quarterback and maybe the contract extension is only a rumor. OTOH, the history of the last 30 years tells me that any optimism is not warranted.

That would be interesting, but I'd be surprised if he made that far of a jump. Trent Green was a very good quarterback for about three or four years that could take over games at times.

On the positive side, Reid near the top of the list of guys I'd want to select and develop a later round guy. Chiefs still need a back up and they can target one at some spot in the draft.

There are still teams with worse coaches, worse talent, and overall worse franchises in the league.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on either point, I was just excited for real change to come to KC after all these years. I've been a fan of the Chiefs my entire life and I've only seen one playoff victory.

To put it another (and much more depressing) way, the Ravens have won more Super Bowls (2) than the Chiefs have won playoff games (0) since 2000.

Joe Flacco's statistics:

2009: 88.9 passer rating, 21 TD, 12 Int, 3613 yards, 63.1 comp %

2011: 80.9 passer rating, 20 TD, 12 Int, 3610 yards, 57.6 comp %
2012: 87.7 passer rating, 22 TD, 10 Int, 3817 yards, 59.7 comp %

Is there anything in that 5-year trend to indicate "elite"?

Alex Smith's last 3 passer ratings has gone:
2010: 82.1
2011: 90.7
2012: 104.1

His TD/Int ratio the past 3 seasons is 44-20, which is the same proportion as Flacco's last 3 years.

Both guys are 28 years old.

Those are facts.

When did Colin Kaepernick or Russell Wilson win Super Bowls? Have I been in a coma?

And Flacco during the playoffs, against some of the best teams in the NFL, was absolutely ELITE. Pls go JMike. Pls go.

Are you still on hallucinating drugs?
It seems your brain has been in a coma.... but maybe all those years of horseshit from the Chiefs can do that to a man?

Dude above said you need an "elite" QB to win a Super Bowl in today's NFL.

The point I made (I know you see fuzzy) is that Alex Smith's production has been on par with Flacco, up until Flacco just amazed everyone with the magical run.
Can Kaepernick win a Super Bowl?
Can Wilson win a Super Bowl?
Can Matt Ryan win a Super Bowl?
Are they "elite"?
If so, how many QB's are elite?

CORRECT.
Or what the Cardinals traded for Kolb.

What's the difference between Smith & Flacco, aside from the run the Ravens just had with Flacco playing great in the playoff run?

Reid thinks he's going to take a backup QB within the next 2 years and recoup those 2nd round picks.
