Hope this doesnt happen either. If NE doesnt want to pay him, no way we're going to. If we're going to pay $8-10m for Welker, better off going after Wallace. Of course, I would be shocked if we sign anyone major. I'm guessing QB Josh Johnson and maybe a second tier safety to replace Goldson.

Apparently RJF is getting more attention from 4-3 teams than 3-4. I never really thought he was stout enough for the the 3-4...

It makes sense he was a great three tech at LSU.

I can see him playing DT in the 4-3 and NT in the 3-4 but we never gave him an actual chance so who knows. Of course, we barely use our NT in our 3-4 defense so while NT is usually the most important position in the 3-4, for us, its not.

Really pissed that we kept Rogers. Imagine signing Sean Smith to start with Culliver, draft a corner to play nickel and trade Brown who's a UFA in a year from now. As usual, FA comes and goes and all we do is go after old washed veterans that we dont even need or quite simply, should just retire. UGH.

Oh well, if we can sign Phillips to replace Goldson, I'll be somewhat happy. :)

RJF is gone he's going to be one of if not the highest paid DT's in this free agent class and Baalke isn't going to match it. I think with Jared Cook and Dustin Keller hitting the market that will make it easier to bring Delaine back.

Smith would have a WAY bigger contract than Rodgers does now.

Hell no, Sean Smith IS NOT a good cover CB. He's tall and has straight line speed. That's it. He will be overpaid and his new team will regret it. And no way he signs for what Rogers signs for. He'll probably double that easily.

Welker isn't a real priority. We would never pay him what he think he deserves. And Abraham on the cheap would defintely be of value. Another pass-rusher off the bench is what this team needs THE MOST. He would be is a pass-rush specialist. That's what Abraham does best. Hell yea, if we can get him for cheap, we should jump at the chance.

I guess I'd rather go to Philadelphia. Cincinnati is a death sentence.

As for Sean Smtih, I'd rather take my chances with Chris Gamble.

Yea, I'm quite surprised he's gotten as much interest as he has. Its all good. They'll be plenty of bargins in free agency to fill the void.

Smith is looking for $7-8m a season which is only a million or so more than Rogers is getting on average. And Smith cant be worse than Rogers. I dont know why so many people think Rogers is good. He's average at best and declined last season. But whatever, to each his own.

Gamble is worst than Smith. And older. Just say no. We should be looking a young talent. Guys who haven't quite blossomed yet. Leodis McKelvin, Bradley Fletcher, guys like that. If were going with a vet, should be a guy like Pacman Jones, who has turned himself into arguably the best nickelback in the league and is still a dangerous returner.

So far our only reported call has been to Welker...lol but who knows, these reports are all half-baked tonight...but entertaining at least.

Yep, why pay younger talent like Goldson $8m a year (or franchise him at $7.5m) when you can pay an old declining Rogers $7m a year on a four year contract that we both know he wont complete?

And you should be happy if I was GM, I would be keeping your favorite defensive player in Goldson. :)

Pacman Jones? WTF?? Maybe, we could bring back Nate Clements. Come on man. Whats with you guys wanting all these old washed up bums? I dont see the point in wasting money on old washed up veterans when you could get younger options with far more upside and potential. See, Randy Moss, Leonard Davis, Clark Haggans, etc.....seriously, we dont need old guys. Going to spend money? At least spend it on a player thats worth taking a chance on.

Why can't he be worst? Because you said so? Or have you actually watched him play? Smith makes some plays, but he isn't a cover CB. I've watched dude for two years now NOT play up to his physical gifts. He lacks consistency and is stiff(most guys who are that tall are). He's not a bum but he's nowhere near a Carlos Rogers when he was that young. Rogers played good for years before he became a Niner. He's been a consistent CB his whole career. Sean Smith wishes he could have that kind of career. If Rogers is average, Smith is below average. Just what makes him better than Rogers? He doesn't do half of what we ask Rogers to do.

See, Randy Moss, Leonard Davis, Clark Haggans, etc.....seriously, we dont need old guys. Going to spend money? At least spend it on a player thats worth taking a chance on.
Dan talk to me when you watch football outside of the Niners. Jones has turned himself into a very good slot CB. I'm not asking to sign him long-term, just until we develop a young guy to man the slot. Don't critique guys you don't even watch play.

I have seen Smith play. Not a lot but enough to know I rather have him than Rogers. Rogers had a fluke of a year in 2011 to get his contract and declined in 2012. He'll continue to decline in 2013 and we'll release him a year from now. As for Smith being inconsistent and whatnot, I think that has more to do with where he's playing. A lot of players on bad teams dont even care but once they go to a good team and start winning, then they play better and more up to their actual ability. I like Smith because he's a big physical corner and could be good with Culliver. Rogers is physical but gets beat more times than not and its not like he's going to get any better as he gets older. At least Smith has the upside and potential to become better especially on a winning team and good defense.

I do watch teams outside of the Niners. In fact, Bengals are one of my secondary teams since im a fan of A.J. Green. Jones has become a good nickelback but he's old, I still wouldnt trust him to not get into trouble and I personally would prefer a younger guy for that role who can get better and evolve into a starter as opposed to Jones to would only evolve out the door in a year or two. Besides, if we were to sign Jones to play nickel, would that be saying that he's better than Rogers who plays nickel? That doesnt sound good to me at all.

Sean Smith plays on one side of the field. Carlos Rogers plays all over the field. He plays over the slot, which increases his value tremendously. If Rogers were strictly a outside CB like Smith, he'd be lights out. But I dont expect you to understand that so we'll just agree to disagree and move on. And Rogers didn't have a fluke year, he just caught all the ints he dropped when he was a Redskin. Ask any Skins fan, they'll tell you. Rogers ONLY problem was he couldn't catch the damn ball.
