Houston We Have Lift Off

With the draft already under way Houston pulled off the biggest move thus far without selecting a player. The Texans have agreed to send 2nd and 3rd round draft choices and swap 4th round choices for the rights to Percy Harvin. The former Vikings electric playmaker will join top standouts Andre Johnson and Arian Foster at the offensive skill positions.

With the additions of Kenny Phillips and the aggressive trade for Percy Harvin the Texans are setting themselves up for a major run at the Superbowl this year. Gary Kubiak knows he needs to outscore the Ravens and Patriots and has strengthened his team on both sides of the ball to do just that.

Losing a second and third round pick isn’t a massive blow to the Texans who received a third rounder as a compensatory pick for losing Mario Williams last year. With a receiving core of Andre Johnson, Percy Harvin, Harry Douglas and Devier Posey, along with the tight end duo of Owen Daniels and Garrett Graham the Texans could have an explosive offense outside of the top notch running game they already have.

Bengals open negotiations with Dunlap and Atkins

The front office has announced it is meeting with the representatives for both young defenders in the coming weeks. Dunlap is expected to see a nice pay raise. While not producing the numbers he did previously, he is still applying pressure in his snaps and improving each year vs the run. Atkins has proven to be the top 4-3 DT in the league and will by all accounts be paid as such.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS GM, HINES PRESS CONFERENCE REGARDING FIRST ROUND PICK KEENAN ALLEN

You had many other needs. Why did you choose a WR with your first pick?

He was the best player on the board. We liked how he ran routes, caught the ball, and was a playmaker. He's not as explosive as a Mike Wallace, but we like his make up. He was the best player on our board and we believe Allen fits a huge need with Mike Wallace leaving Pittsburgh.

Can you describe his strengths as a football player? Weaknesses?

What jumped out to Coach Tomlin and I is that he had a big catch radius, which our team severely lacks. He doesn't have great speed, but he's fast enough to run away from defenders. He works hard in his craft and he prepares well. As a football player and human, he symbolizes what we as an organization look for and value. Everytime we watch film on him, his play jumped out. His routes, hands, body control, etc. We know about his knee surgery, but that doesn't concern us. Our doctors cleared him and he's ready to go. We're excited to have him.

With not a lot of draft picks and very little money, how do you approach the rest of the draft and free agency?

Just how we usually do business. We will continue to take the best player available regardless of the position. We always evaluate every situation and go from there. That's all the time I have for now. Take care.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers invest in defense in first two rounds

After the selection of Barkevious Mingo in the first round the Buccaneers invested there second round pick in Cornerback Robert Alford from Southeastern Louisiana. With both prospects out of Louisiana they further improved the defense. After they resigned Michael Bennett and Ronde Barber and added Derek Cox, Larry Grant, Brice McCain, Israel Idonije and Amobi Okoye there defense will look completely different.

Barkevious Mingo who is by most viewed as a pass rusher from the DE or OLB spot will be fit in as the new SLB for the Buccaneers. With Lavonte David and Mason Foster already in place the Buccaneers where looking for a replacement for Quincy Black. Many expected them to slide Foster to the strong side and with the addition of MLB Larry Grant this looked to be the plan. However the new GM decided to go another route with the addition of the athletic Mingo.

For the second round the GM chose to add another piece to the already improved secondary with the physical Robert Alford. After they already added Derek Cox and Nickleback Brice McCain they now completed the rehaul of the leagues worst secondary. At safety Mark Barron is a surefire starter while good old Ronde Barber is penciled in for the other spot.

Rodgers Neighborhood Gets New Residents

The Green Bay Packers have invested four of their first five selections on the offensive side of the ball. Following a free agency period where the team beefed up the defensive line, they chose to make sure the long term success of their offense and franchise quarterback would hold for years to come.

First round selection, at the 32nd pick overall, was Louisiana Tech receiver Quinton Patton. Patton had put together two wonderful seasons at Tech and jumped on the radar big time following a senior season where Tech experienced success and Patton continued the momentum during Senior Bowl week and the Combine. Patton reminds many within the organization of current receiver Jordy Nelson, and if he can duplicate his production then the pick will be worthwhile.

The team's first third round selection went to California center Brian Schwenke. Schwenke shined brightest this year at the Senior Bowl, showing off his tenacity and overall toughness for the position. Green Bay gave a 2nd round tender to Evan Dietrich Smith, and while he is the slotted starter, he now has competition for spot.

Green Bay's second third round selection was used to pick up South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore, a back touted as a first round candidate to start the season, suffered a significant injury during the season and it sent his stock in free fall. With reports of impressive progress, the Packers feel he's someone who can be worked in throughout the year and be the team's back for 2014.

The Packers traded up in round four to select Rice tight end Vance McDonald. McDonald is an athletic tight end and while his statistics might now wow, his game has the ability to be a difference maker at the next level. Earlier in the off-season the tam cut Jermichael Finley and McDonald is projected to be his long term replacement.

Green Bay has a handful of picks during the last four rounds and it's widely assumed they'll look towards the defensive side of the ball for the remainder of the draft.

REPORT: PATRIOTS WILL RELEASE CONNOLLY, GREGORY FOLLOWING DRAFT

Multiple reports indicate that the New England Patriots will be releasing two of their 2012 starters in the days following the 2013 NFL Draft: offensive guard Dan Connolly and safety Steve Gregory. The two moves, which will clear $3.5 million in roster space ($2.25 for Connolly, $1.25 for Gregory), come as little surprise after the Patriots re-signed offensive guard Donald Thomas in free agency and targeted upgrades at the safety position, signing strong safety Charles Woodson and selecting Alabama prospect Robert Lester in the sixth round of the draft.

In addition, the Patriots will reportedly release defensive linemen Jermaine Cunningham and Brandon Deaderick, as well as defensive back Malcolm Williams. The releases may come as some surprise considering the 955 combined snaps Cunningham and Deaderick accounted for in 2012; New England must be comfortable in their ability to replace any production lost via 2012 third-round pick Jake Bequette, recent signing Armond Armstead, and 2013 second-rounder Sam Montgomery. Those three moves, combined with cap room saved by releasing Connolly and Gregory, will save New England a total of $5.3 million, suggesting they may be active during post-draft free agent signings.

Saints Release Oft-Injured DE Greg Romeus

Many thought this year would be the year that third year defensive end Greg Romeus might see the field, however, after today's news that won't be the case.

The Saints have decided to waive the former Pittsburgh standout likely due to the duo of defensive ends just recently drafted. It also didn't help that Romeus was limited in his first year recovering from a torn ACL and then repeated that ACL while adding a torn MCL in the same knee last year, his second with the team.

The team saves the Saints a little over $500,00 in cap space.

STEELERS GM HINES DISCUSSES HIS 2013 NFL DRAFT:

ON KEENAN ALLEN:

We already discussed him during our press conference, but we can't speak enough of how high we are on Keenan. He believe the sky is the limit for this kid.

On LSU LB Kevin Minter:

Loved his tape. He's the prototypical MLB we look for. We do believe he can play all three downs and be the leader of our defense. Very, very excited for Kevin's future with us.

On Justin Pugh:

We have a new OL coach and he raved about how well he pulled and trapped. He believes we have a Pro Bowl OG on our hands. When we turned on the film and watched him at the combine, we couldn't be anymore impressed. With Willie Colon gone, we needed that extra depth.

On Tony Jefferson:

Going into the draft we were looking for a young safety to groom. We believe we found one. He's a better football player than tester, but we liked his overall body of work enough to draft him in this spot. He's getting his start at SS and will be a special teams demon. He can play multiple roles in our defense.

On Chris Gragg:

We needed depth behind Heath Miller due to him being out for a while. Gragg showed up on our radar watching Tyler Wilson. We loved his speed and ability to separate. He can line up in various spots in our offense and be a match up problem. We really like this kid.

On Ace Sanders:

Ace is a playmaker. He is such a joystick out on that field and makes a lot of people miss. We expect him to make an impact on special teams first, but he has WR potential as well. We like him in the slot and have a lot of creative ways to get him the football.

On Sean Renfree:

Love Sean. He has everything you look for in a QB and we needed to develop a young QB for the long term. We would feel comfortable with Sean in the game if Ben were to go down. Smart, smart kid.

On Michael Ford:

The reality is we stunk running the football last year. We need to get better. Michael's speed and power showed up on tape and it really impressed us. His special teams work is also impressive. I don't know what role he will be playing because he isn't good at pass blocking, but we will make him better.

Jaguars Cut Ties With Henne

After just one season with the team, Chad Henne is once again in the unemployment line. After failing to beat out Blaine Gabbert, Henne only played in 10 games in the 2012 season, with six starts. He won only one game while amassing mediocre statistics. And with the addition of rookie E.J. Manuel, he was expendable. The move saves the Jaguars over $2 million in 2013.

Cardinals Cut Five

After finishing their draft the Cardinals continued to make moves reshaping their roster. With the resigning of Kolb & Hoyer and the addition of Mallett, Arizona saw no need to retain former starting QBs Lindley & Skelton. Arizona also released former 1st round selection Beanie Wells, 3rd rounder Early Doucet & Veteran Jeff King. While all three had been starters at sometime in their careers in Arizona their cap number simply did not reflect their on field production and thus were released.

Lions make final roster cuts

The Detroit Lions have cut five players, just one day after the 2013 Draft concluded. The players released were: WR Patrick Edwards, WR Devin Thomas, WR Terrence Austin, CB Ross Weaver, and CB Lionel Smith. Edwards and Thomas both looked like strong candidates to make the team, but became expendable after the team drafted two wide receivers - Cobi Hamilton and Jasper Collins - in the 4th and 7th rounds of the Draft. Weaver and Smith were both longshots to make the team, but could still end up on the practice squad.

The Buffalo New is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have finally laid the hammer to former starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, who has fallen out of favor with the fan base, is now expected to find work in another city next year. The Bills are expecting to have Tavaris Jackson begin the season as the starting QB and be a bridge to future starter Matt Barkley, who was drafted in the 3rd round this year.

Fitzpatrick isn't the only name cut the Bills have gotten ride of. Today, the Bills announced that they reached an injury settlement with TE Scott Chandler. Chandler became expendable when the Bills used their 2nd and 4th round picks on TE's Zach Ertz and Jordan Reed.

Also released today includes RB Zach Brown, OL David Snow, OL Sam Young, and FS Manu Silva
