Yepppp...
Although I read we could still clear up some cap space with cuts (vickers, Connor, free, etc.) and obviously whenever we extend Romo. If we want to make a run at Winston we could do it, it'll be tight but we have options.

You do have to wonder what's wrong with Winston when he's been released twice in 2 years.

I wonder if the Chiefs are moving to a man blocking scheme, Winston has played in zone for the most part his whole career. Regardless Chiefs fans are heated, he was on of the few bright spots on an underachieving offense. Even if he did have a down year his contract was a minuscule 4 years 22 mil compared to the 32 mil he have Free signed for.

And I think this signals that they could get a great young OT in the draft for less $.

is the first overall pick cheaper than what Winston is getting? I just think something is off when a guy like Winston gets cut 2 years in a row by 2 teams.

Think it has a lot to do with the coaching staff. I believe Winston also had some struggles in pass protection previous to last year. He performed really well last year so I'm not certain on that.
With Reid in town the offense is going to be getting a scheme overhaul and Winston most likely didn't fit.

Any interest in Danny Woodhead? He's an intriguing player, just not sure if JG can utilize all his talents though.

I never thought this guy had much. He's scrappy, but hardly ever breaks a tackle.

Saw a couple of people brought it up on twitter, Broaddus completely shut it down several times.

This is what I hate about restructuring all those deals:
Quote:
Dallas already has $106 million on the 2015 salary cap for just 20 players. Now, it's not fair to sound the alarms for a year that far in the future but they have locked themselves in to a 29-year-old Carr in 2015, while a 33-year-old Witten and a 31-year-old Austin will count for $10.34 million in dead money, compared to just $4.07 million a few days ago. And none of this includes whatever crazy cap cost will likely exist for a 35-year-old Romo.
And keep in mind that, as things currently stand, Tony Romo and Sean Lee will be free agents next offseason, while Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, Bruce Carter and DeMarco Murray will have expiring contracts in 2015.

We're locking ourselves into aging players by backloading all this guaranteed money. The salary cap can be manipulated to an extent but we're getting close to the point where the ripple effects become inevitable. That's what happened to the Raiders, and they spent years trying to dig themselves out of cap hell.

Hard to say how prohibitive it will be without knowing what the cap is at. If its increased substantially, it may not matter at all. If its only up a couple million, it could be rough.

Keep in mind how far off some of that money is. We'll look well over every cap and have been for a while now. Some of those base salaries are crazy high for next year and will be restructured.
A couple of contracts have extremely high jumps in the 4th year which is typically the time when it behooves the team to cut the player if he isn't performing top 5 for his position.
Stephen Jones has already said the contracts moves they make are planned well ahead of when they are triggered. Each of the restructures were built into the language of the contract so that there is no negotiations when they occur.
Dallas isn't sweating the salary cap despite the media, and fans, sweating it every single year.

THIS...I remember when the Iggles were going crazy signing EVERYBODY, it seemed, and they never seemed to get into anything they couldnt fix. Hell even the Skins were doing the same thing when Dan bought the team but they seemed to have worked it out as well. We always talk about being in cap hell but Stephen manages to get us out of it every year.

Not to mention that the new cap rules allow a team to roll over left over cap from the previous season. I mentioned it in an earlier post that in a pinch we could always plan to roll cap to eat prorated money if they wanted to dump a larger contract the next season. The other good thing is we don't have to seal with this stupid penalty for a the Miles contract after this year.

even with the 2.67 million rollover we're still 6 million over the cap

i just read this suggestion for the cowboys in john clayton's mailbag
Q: I know this isn't going to happen, but what are the odds of Dallas acquiring Darrelle Revis and Oshiomogho Atogwe? You would have Brandon Carr and Revis as No. 1 and No. 2, you move Claiborne to cover the slot, and move Mike Jenkins to safety to pair with Otagwe. You then trade Orlando Scandrick for some picks in this year's draft. Far-fetched, but what do you think?
Layne in Mobile, Ala.
what a dope!!!

I call it the "Madden" effect. The same with people who talk about trading every player on the roster as if it's feasible with this CBA and the league's trend towards higher guaranteed dollars. Franchise mode has created a bunch of people whose knowledge on salary cap and roster transactions stem solely from Madden.

The Cowboys released linebacker Dan Connor almost a year to the day they signed him to a two-year contract, a league source confirmed.
The team was in discussions with Connor about a new deal that would allow him to stay with the Cowboys.
This off-season, management had asked Connor, a reserve player, to take a pay cut so the Cowboys could clear room under the NFL’s $123 million salary cap.
Cutting Connor saves the Cowboys $3 million, a figure equivalent to his base salary. Connor’s 2013 cap number is $4.35 million. The 27-year-old signed a two-year, $6.5 million contract with the Cowboys last March after spending the previous four seasons with Carolina.

Ratliff has $3.66 million in base salary converted to signing bonus, helping the save the Cowboys $2.93 million against the cap.
Scandrick and Berndeau also had base salary converted to signing bonus to reduce their cap hit for 2013.
The group joins linebacker DeMarcus Ware, tight end Jason Witten, receiver Miles Austin, center Ryan Cook and cornerback Brandon Carr in restructuring their contracts to help the Cowboys clear cap room.
Connor is the second veteran released for cap purposes, joining safety Gerald Sensabaugh.
