In an interview awhile back, David Caldwell named Gabbert as one of the team's building blocks going forward. The reporter asked him, "What about Chad Henne?". Caldwell answered, "Well, we have Chad under contract for another year.....".

Hardly a ringing endorsement.

If Manning had any interest in being a Jaguar he'd be a Jaguar right now. Lets not be ridiculous.

The Jags didn't try for him because they knew they couldn't get him.

Yeah, and everyone predicted that Peyton would end up in Denver. Potato Head went to the money and nothing else. Also, Gene Smith was asked directly about Manning at the time it appeared he would become available and said the team had no interest.

Remember when people were complaining that Justin Blackmon wasn't doing ****? Then how Gabbert got hurt and he went for 615 yards in 7 games? lololol

It took Blackmon half a season to learn the playbook. He was on the verge of getting benched early on because he wasn't up to speed. Mularkey came right out and said it. When they asked Caldwell to name the building blocks of the team going forward, he didn't mention Blackmon. Which seems a bit odd considering he is the highest draft pick they've had since the first two years of the franchise.

Yeah, you're right. Probably just a coincidence that he went for 200 yards in the exact same week that Henne took over.

Garbage time stats against weaker opponents. Jags were out of the playoffs and just playing for themselves by the time Henne took over and Blackmon woke up. From what I've heard from Dave Caldwell, they don't seem too high on him. If it comes down to a Gabbert/Blackmon situation, Jason will be taking the Percy Harvin bus out of town, I think,

Hey, do you guys think Gabbert is going to be a top 3 QB next year, or only top 5?

That's pretty much the story on Henne. I think he's been more or less the same guy since his Freshman year at Michigan.

I still think Gabbert has a shot to develop, even if it is only a small chance. He was the youngest player in the NFL when they drafted him and this season is crucial for him. Jacksonville has never really had a lot of talent around him and with added maturity, there is a possibility that he gets substantially better.

The fact that Jacksonville is still committed to him usually is a sign that they still feel he has potential to be a decent starter. I still remember that Eli basically stunk his first 3 years in the league and didn't break out till his 4th season, so I am always reluctant to jump on the bust bandwagon till a QB has been in the league for 4 seasons as long as his team continues to start him.

Now I'm not guaranteeing that success is in his future, that is still up in the air and could go either way, just saying he still has a chance to be decent based on his age coming into the league, the talent base in Jacksonville and his added maturity. He certainly has all the physical tools, but you have to wonder if he has the mental toughness needed for success in the NFL. Time will tell.

Chance to develop? Gabbert is the one the Jaguars are building their team around. All of the coaching staff, pretty much, and about half the players on the team have been cut loose. You don't have to be a genius (or even a message board goof) to see what David Caldwell and Gus Bradley consider to be the the problem with the Jaguars. It isn't Blaine Gabbert.

I concur. Gabbert's 2013 season is probably going to look like Peyton Manning's 2004. Gabbert is godtier QB at the very least.

Just because the Jaguars brass want to roll with Gabbert, doesn't mean he isn't garbage.

They drafted him, when it was clear he was a total pansy when it came to pressure.

Here's where I come out on Blaine Gabbert, and then I will kindly ask the thread to end this derail and go back to the topic of Ryan Mallett.

Blaine Gabbert, despite widespread perception, actually did improve from his rookie year. His sophomore campaign was significantly superior in pretty much every way, as he saw an improvement of 8% on his completion percentage, 22 on his passer rating, and more yards per attempt. I know, right?

Thing was that the bar he started from was extremely low. He improved from "historically awful" in 2011 to "terrible" in 2012. But it was improvement nonetheless. Blaine Gabbert has not stagnated. He is one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL, but he is progressing. The concept of "potential" is nebulous, but the Jaguars staff see it in him, and I expect they will give him one more shot in 2013.

There seems to be a popular misperception amongst fans from other teams that Chad Henne was a noticably superior quarterback than Gabbert last year. This is simply not true. He had a couple decent games immediately after he started, perhaps because teams had not yet adjusted to him. After that, his performance was similar to that of Blaine Gabbert circa 2011, as Henne struggled to complete passes at even a 50% clip and turned the ball over at a much higher rate than Gabbert did this year. At least Gabbert is young. Henne is worthless, and I would prefer he not even be on the roster next year.

That's my take on the Jaguars quarterback situation. Gabbert isn't good, but he might be salvageable. Henne is hot garbage. Take it or leave it.

These guys didn't draft Gabbert, though. That was about three administrations ago or something. They aren't bound to Blaine in any fashion. Other than choice.
