I really think you guys should give Mike Jenkins a look. I know it'll seem like I'm just a homer and puffing him up, but while he's had a very up and down career he still has #1 CB ability in him and is a great #2 if you have someone to stick with the top guys. He's extremely athletic, has good length, range, he attacks the ball in the air instead of letting it come down to the ground, and he can stick with anyone man to man.

His negatives are he's been battling injuries this past year, and inconsistency. He'll play like a stud for a month, then a rookie for 2 games, etc. His rookie year was a typical rookie year with ups and downs, then he had a pro bowl season, then he had a really down year. The last 2 years have been somewhere in between, but considering the options you have, what he'll cost, and the potential he provides, I think he's going to be a steal for somebody.

4.7 million in space

And we just re-signed Delmas to 2 years. Boom Quin and Delmas and Houston in the secondary.

Wow I really love our safety backfield. Especially is Delmas can stay healthy this is the ebst safety duo we have had since I can remember.

Secondary is looking good. Delmas is a much better signing knowing that we have another dependable safety on board. Best S talent we have had in a long time.

First 3 picks need to be OT,DE,WR in no particular order. I'd love to steal Menelik Watson in the 2nd.

Dumervil just got released. I doubt we have the cap to bring him in but signing him would allow us to go heavy oline this year in the draft

There are still some nice veteran DEs out there. I'm thinking that we can raid the DE pile after the draft and squeeze a year out of some of them.

I also hope that Damontre Moore or Bjeorn Werner actually fall to the 2nd and allow us to murder this draft.

Default Avril was a DE who suffered from an inflated opinion of himself.

I am ecstatic he is gone. Go away Cliff.

Wow, can't believe they got Delmas back.

This team still has major question marks but I think they have done a great job so far. Once they signed Quinn I thought Delmas had no chance of coming back.

Yeah this secondary is in real good shape. I think Bentley and Green can grow. Greenwood has the measurables but is raw. And Bartell did a great job Week 17 against Brandon Marshall.

Lions still need 2 DEs IMO.

This is certainly the year for 4-3 teams needing a veteran DE on a short-term contract - and all those guys are still on the market. It's a pity the Lions are pretty much maxed out right now with the cap.

Yah, people forget we still have Bartell. He's not great or anything, but he's a veteran, offers some size at CB that we lack and has had some success in this league. He's a nice complement to the rest of the guys we have back there.

Lions need at least 2 DEs, if not 3. Jones is basically a Hill replacement. If he plays a lot of DE, we another DT(which could be Fluellen and/or Williams). This is why I want Jackson back, he's dependable as a 3rd DE type. Ideal situation would of course be adding Dumervil, who is made for this defense. Count on 15 sacks if we get him.

Well it will be interesting to see if we get aggressive and sign stafford to an extension. That would ultimately allow us to sign Dumervil if we wanted

I agree, I doubt we have the $$$'s to go after any of these guys. Jones will play 1 DE position and we'll likely draft a couple more starting in round 2.

Easy to get rid of players, finding a solid replacement is much harder to come by.

I think Jackson will probably sign a little later in free agency. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs post draft.

I expect us to sign one of these DE's but not until later in FA. Their value has plummeted since Avril and the other top guys signed their deals. I expect freeney to go to denver and it sounds like Dumervil may be headed to the ravens.

I think we could bring in Osi on a 1 year deal if he wants to try and boost his value. We offer a starting spot on a line that allows him to never be double teamed. Has to be more appealing than some other teams

Lions restructured Calvin to free up 3.4 million in room. 857 k extra each year cap hit.

No big signings though. Hanson, sign the draft picks, hopefully Lo Jack

Yeah, people forget that you need quite a few million to sign the #5 pick plus your other rookies. In talking about FA's, I'm not sure though if he was including Detroit FA's, he'll probably wait for the market to establish their worth and still try to resign a couple more.

Justin Blackmon was last year's number 5 pick and his cap figure for his rookie season was $3.365m.

The figures for Hanson are reported to be the vet minimum of $950,000.

They'll have to be very careful with these restructures pushing cap money into the future. Suh's cap figure jumps from $10.492m this year to $21.412m in 2014. Calvin Johnson leaps from $8.772m to $13.057m in 2014 then $20.557m a year later and $24m in 2016.

Cap figures for Suh/Stafford/Calvin:

2013:
Stafford - 20,820,000
Suh - 10,492,500
Calvin - 8,772,000
Total: $40,084,500

2014:
Stafford - 19,320,000
Suh - 21,442,500
Calvin - 13,057,000
Total: $53,819,500

2015:
Stafford - 17,271,250
Suh - 13,242,500
Calvin - 20,557,000
Total: $51,070,750

By 2014, the Big 3 will see their combined cap figures increase by nearly $14m. How do the Lions recoup that money?

Obviously Stafford needs to sign an extension by next year. Giving him a large signing bonus, which can be spread over 5 years for the cap, combined with a much lower base salary in 2014 and '15 could save approx 6 or 7 million dollars each season.

Tony Scheffler and Jahvid Best (a combined $5m in 2013) will be off the books by 2014. Raiola ($3m this year) is an UFA and will likely retire or move on elsewhere. Either Burleson takes another big paycut or a further $5.5m in cap space can be created with his release. Bringing him back for a $2m base salary in 2014 would create $3.5m instead and is probably the better option. Mike Thomas ($3.5m) - gone.

The figures for Hanson are reported to be the vet minimum of $950,000.

They'll have to be very careful with these restructures pushing cap money into the future. Suh's cap figure jumps from $10.492m this year to $21.412m in 2014. Calvin Johnson leaps from $8.772m to $13.057m in 2014 then $20.557m a year later and $24m in 2016.

Cap figures for Suh/Stafford/Calvin:

2013:
Stafford - 20,820,000
Suh - 10,492,500
Calvin - 8,772,000
Total: $40,084,500

2014:
Stafford - 19,320,000
Suh - 21,442,500
Calvin - 13,057,000
Total: $53,819,500

2015:
Stafford - 17,271,250
Suh - 13,242,500
Calvin - 20,557,000
Total: $51,070,750

Plus 7.3 million in dead money they get from KVB/Backus/Titus Young. Detroit will be fine in cap space and will extend Stafford. If they extend Suh as well even better.

I'm wondering if they can afford to keep all 3 in the future with no real cap increases forthcoming. One of them may have to go if there isn't some substantial restructuring. They were all drafted under the old CBA when cap limits were increasing by 10-15 million a year but those days are apparently over and we will have 3 players who are sucking up about half our cap.

Our window of opportunity could be closing faster than we think because I doubt it will be financially feasible to retain all 3 in the future with a cap limit that is basically flat while their salaries are going up.

In fact, all NFL teams who spent near their cap maximum are finding the new NFL reality painful and real cap hell is now actually upon them. The 10-15 million dollar increases in past cap years made cap hell disappear but those days are gone and real cap hell is now very possible.

Young teams like San Fran and Seattle can sign a lot of FA's because most of their stars are still on their rookie contracts and their QB's are being paid peanuts, but even they will face cap hell in the near future when Kaepernick and Wilson have their rookie contracts run out and they have to be resigned at the going rate for top QB's. The window for success has been substantially reduced for teams that are rebuilding. It is going to be a whole new NFL.

So far so good on the cap. The worst of it was last year and this year based on the old CBA and the Lions still got done what they wanted. Retaining Avri, Tulloch, Backus, Hill last year and getting Bush, Quin, Jones, Houston back, Levy back this year.

Calvin is still low this year and next year though. If they wait to re-sign Stafford and structure it like Calvins, Stafford could be low for 2014,2015 and 2016. Same with Suh, and really Suh won't be making 20 million per year. 12 million per is already high for DTS which is what Suh originally got. His cap number is high from restrucutres the last 2 years.

Lions should have some room next year. Not worried yet.
