Default March 18th Mock Draft

This is the first round of a three-round mock set to be posted on NEPD tonight. Let me know what you think!

MARCH 18th MOCK DRAFT

1. Kansas City Chiefs – OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M*

After releasing Eric Winston, Joeckel seems more likely than ever. By trading for Alex Smith and signing Chase Daniel, the Chiefs appear unlikely to target Geno Smith atop the draft.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars – DT Sharrif Floyd, Florida*

Roy Miller adds depth to the roster, but Jacksonville could still use a stud or two at defensive tackle. Jarvis Jones could be another option pending the results of his medical exam.

3. Oakland Raiders – DT Star Lotulelei, Utah

Lotulelei could provide Oakland with talent at defensive tackle; losing Desmond Bryant and potentially Richard Seymour will hurt. Jones and Dee Milliner would make sense as well.

4. Philadelphia Eagles – CB Dee Milliner, Alabama*

The first order of business in Philadelphia has been repairing the defensive backfield, but more stability is needed at cornerback considering Bradley Fletcher’s durability concerns.

5. Detroit Lions – OT Eric Fisher, Central Michigan

Jeff Backus’ retirement creates a need at one offensive tackle spot. The Lions recently invested a first-round pick in Riley Reiff, but could shift him to the right side to get value at number five.

6. Cleveland Browns – LB Jarvis Jones, Georgia*

Assuming Jones passes his medical checks, he would be a solid value at this point in the first round; he is a more productive rusher than Dion Jordan, Ezekiel Ansah, or Barkevious Mingo.

7. Arizona Cardinals – OT Lane Johnson, Oklahoma

Levi Brown is currently slotted in at left tackle for the Cardinals, but they would be wise to seek an upgrade there. Drafting an athletic blindside protector such as Johnson could help.

8. Buffalo Bills – QB Geno Smith, West Virginia

Buffalo is in dire need of help at the quarterback position. On the heels of what was reportedly an impressive pro day, Geno Smith’s draft stock appears to be headed for the top ten.

9. New York Jets – DE Dion Jordan, Oregon

Rex Ryan has assembled an impressive defensive line, but his defense still relies upon finding effective pass rushers. Jordan’s stock has been climbing and he could easily end up here.

10. Tennessee Titans – DT Sheldon Richardson, Missouri*

By signing Andy Levitre to a six-year deal, the Titans solidified their left guard spot, which should rule out Chance Warmack this high. Richardson would complement Jurrell Casey well.

11. San Diego Chargers – WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee*

Without a legitimate left tackle available, San Diego may look to provide Philip Rivers with a true number one option such as Tennessee’s Cordarrelle Patterson, this year’s top receiver.

12. Miami Dolphins – DE Barkevious Mingo, Louisiana St.*

While help is required at cornerback, the Dolphins would do well to sign a rusher such as Mingo, who would rotate with Jared Odrick at left end and Koa Misi at strongside linebacker.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – CB Xavier Rhodes, Florida St.*

This pick was reportedly involved in trade discussions surrounding New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis; if the Buccaneers are unable to land Revis, they may invest in Rhodes.

14. Carolina Panthers – WR Tavon Austin, West Virginia

Although they need to address their run defense, adding a versatile playmaker such as Austin would offer Carolina plenty of options offensively; he is a perfect complement to Cam Newton.

15. New Orleans Saints – DE Bjoern Werner, Florida St.*

Werner’s measurables mimic those of Paul Kruger, who recently secured a lucrative deal in free agency. Rob Ryan needs additional pass rushers for a championship push.

16. St. Louis Rams – OG Chance Warmack, Alabama

Warmack has been hailed as one of the top talents in this year’s draft; he could help Jeff Fisher and St. Louis regardless of whether or not they sign offensive tackle Jake Long.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers – DE Ezekiel Ansah, Brigham Young

James Harrison is out, and although the Steelers have attempted to seduce Victor Butler, they remain in need of an outside linebacker; Pittsburgh is reportedly interested in Ansah.

18. Dallas Cowboys – OG Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina

Dallas hasn’t been able to find quality guards thus far; currently they employ Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau at the left and right guard spots, respectively.

19. New York Giants – DE Datone Jones, ULCA

With a defensive rebuild underway, New York could use a versatile defensive lineman such as Jones, who could help alleviate the losses of Chris Canty and Osi Umenyiora.

20. Chicago Bears – LB Alec Ogletree, Georgia*

Having converted to middle linebacker from strong safety, Ogletree’s athleticism makes him a natural successor to Brian Urlacher in the middle of Chicago’s defense.

21. Cincinnati Bengals – SS Kenny Vaccaro, Texas

Reggie Nelson has played surprisingly well at one safety spot, but Taylor Mays could be improved upon; Vaccaro fits Mike Zimmer’s defense well.

22. St. Louis Rams (from Redskins) – WR Keenan Allen, California*

Keenan Allen’s recovery from a PCL injury has been slow, but he should still end up in the first round of this April’s draft; after losing Gibson and Amendola, the Rams need help.

23. Minnesota Vikings – WR DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson*

Percy Harvin is out, Greg Jennings is in, yet the Vikings still need complementary receivers. Adding a tall option such as DeAndre Hopkins would help Christian Ponder.

24. Indianapolis Colts – DT Jesse Williams, Alabama

A thickly-built, long-armed defensive lineman like Jesse Williams would help Indianapolis defend against the run; he could contribute as a nose tackle or, ideally, as a left end.

25. Minnesota Vikings (from Seahawks) – LB Kevin Minter, Louisiana St.*

Tyrone McKenzie is currently Minnesota’s top option at middle linebacker; they could use a more reliable starter. Minter’s stock has surpassed Manti Te’o’s at this point.

26. Green Bay Packers – RB Eddie Lacy, Alabama*

Lacy, the top running back in the class, could add another dimension to Green Bay’s offense, which currently lacks a legitimate threat in the offensive backfield.

27. Houston Texans – WR Robert Woods, Southern California*

Lestar Jean, DeVier Posey, and Keshawn Martin are currently Houston’s top options opposite Andre Johnson; they may wish to add a versatile playmaker such as Woods.

28. Denver Broncos – CB Desmond Trufant, Washington

Trufant is a flexible, explosive cornerback with the versatility to play inside or on the boundary; Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie’s one-year deal shouldn’t prevent Denver from drafting him.

29. New England Patriots – DE Cornellius Carradine, Florida St.

Carradine’s height, bulk, and length should remind New England of Chandler Jones; their recent interest in free-agent pass rushers suggests they are seeking an upgrade over Rob Ninkovich.

30. Atlanta Falcons – DE Alex Okafor, Texas

After releasing John Abraham, the Falcons are in dire need of pass rushers; Okafor, who registered 12.5 sacks in 2012, could start at left end and provide some pressure.

31. San Francisco 49ers – CB Johnthan Banks, Mississippi St.

San Francisco’s defensive backfield was depleted when Dashon Goldson left, magnifying the need to invest in that area this offseason; Banks is physical enough for their scheme.

32. Baltimore Ravens – SS Matt Elam, Florida*

Baltimore’s starting safeties in 2012, Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard, are both free agents; the Ravens could replace Pollard with another enforcer in Florida’s Matt Elam.

I'd much rather take Fisher over Joeckel, but I think you already knew that!

Jesse Williams is looking more and more like a solid pick (need wise) with all of the signings. I wish we would edit: draft an OLB but I don't see it happening. Due to drunk Irsay tweets, I think we will have another WR as well.

With all of that said I would love to see DeAndre Hopkins or Desmond Trufant a Colt.

The Packers undoubtedly need to address the running back position, but given the position value, depth in this draft class and Lacy's hamstring issues, I don't see him being their first round target.

Ok Bears pick. I'd prefer Vaccaro, Brown, Trufant, or Moore.

We are bringing him into Buffalo on Friday so I guess the interest is real in Geno. I would not be opposed, still not a firm believer though.

Definitely not an Ogletree fan. Multiple suspensions, failed drug test, and a DUI right before the Combine. I'll pass. I like Brown a lot more than Ogletree anyways.

The Banks pick doesn't make a lot of sense for San Fran. They need a corner that can play in the nickel they have plenty of physical outside guys.

Not a fan of the Colts pick of Jessie Williams. We have good depth at DL now with the signing of Ricky Jean Francois who can play all 3 positions. We also have Redding, Moala, and Nevis at DE and Chapman and McKinney at NT. I could see us adding another NT later in the draft though.

Since there really isnt anyone great when we pick, we would most likely trade down.

Ansah and Werner would both have a really rough rookie season as a 3-4 OLB. Ansah does have a higher ceiling and is the superior prospect at this point in the evaluation process though. They're both questionable fits in a 3-4 scheme though.

The Titans signed Sammie Lee Hill at DT, now giving us Jurrell Casey, Mike Martin, SLH and Karl Klug. Drafting Richardson is overkill.

Give us Mingo.
Give us Patterson.
Give us Ansah.
Give us Werner.

Just don't give us Richardson

Nice picks for the Rams. Sucks that Austin won't be wearin the blue and gold.

I wasn't high on Elam for the Ravens before they cut Pollard (didn't think Elam could play with Pollard) but now that the latter has been released I wouldn't mind that pick. I'm still not too high on it though. Safety is definitely the biggest need for Baltimore right now but I'd prefer Cyprien. There are a lot of differing opinions on his value though.

You are correct though they "may" take Ogletree over both. They will NOT take Werner.
