Halfrican88 hopes to escalate quickly but not get out of hand.
Default Tavon vs Patterson

I've decided that the Bears should draft one of the two if they become available. One one hand, I've fallen in love with Tavon's quick feet and breathtaking vision; on the other hand, Patterson has a poorer version of the above plus softer hands, and a bigger body. I think both would be wonderful in the slot. Who's better and why?

Bears already have big bodies at WR. Taking the best playmaker at wideout would really boost their offense I think.
That's Tavon Austin.

However Cutler seems to have a much greater comfort level with bigger WRs so maybe Patterson is the right call.

I am very high on Austin, and not real high on Patterson. I think Austin makes an immediate impact wherever he goes. Patterson has all the tools (with the exception of questionable hands) that you look for, but my biggest concern with him is that he didn't show up well in Tennessee's biggest games. He did put up something like 8/75/1 against Florida, but against South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama he was nearly blanked. His draft stocks appears to be almost solely built on his potential. I am all about drafting for a high ceiling, but not necessarily at that high of a pick.

I also think something to consider is whether or not either of these guys will still be there at #20. If Carolina takes Patterson at #14 then I would have to think the Rams would take Austin at #16.

Tavon Austin is so much more refined as a wide receiver compared to Patterson, and he has proven, despite is diminutive size, that he can be a big time playmaker against the highest levels of competition.

Patterson, who certainly has the upside to be an outstanding player, offers very little fundamentally as a receiver and will require patience and good coaching to reach his ceiling. I am worried about his hands as well, as he seems to be more of a body catcher than I like to see.

Patterson definitely does not have softer hands than Austin. Austin catches pretty much everything thrown at him, while Patterson has issues at times.

Which combo is scarier - Brandon Marshall and Tavon Austin, or Brandon Marshall and Cordarelle Patterson? I kind of think the latter is more intimidating. I think Tavon's great, but he's definitely a run after the catch receiver. He can make a circus catch for you, but you want to get him the ball in space more than you want to throw him a jump ball. Patterson has incredible ability in the open field as well, but I do think his physical attributes put him just a step above Tavon. They'd both be a nice shot in the arm for Chicago, but if I'm picking one over the other I think I'm going with Patterson. They're both first-round caliber prospects to me, though, easily.

The Bears also have Alshon Jeffery.

I'd go Patterson > Austin, but short term for the Bears i'd say go with Austin. Although I probably wouldn't want to spend #20 on Tavon.

And as fenikz said, Patterson won't be there for the Bears to take.

I forgot about Jeffery...if it were my team I would definitely go with Austin then. But I have already admitted to being biased:-)

If both were there at 20, it would be a tough decision. I think Austin's a much better fit for the Bears given that he's an NFL ready WR and can do all the things that the Bears envisioned with Hester when they moved him permanently to WR. He can stretch the field, line up in the slot, catch the ball underneath and run with it, can make plays in and out of the backfield, and can return kicks.

But Patterson has that Julio Jones ability. If he pans out, nobody would be able to stop the Bears with three 6-2+ WRs, including one that can fly. Probably too good to pass up at 20.

Austin is a better fit in the slot than Patterson and the Bears have Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.

Patterson. He's big, but he's fast. And he's not fat, like Alshon. I'd take him if he's there. I don't see why people are so confident Tavon can play WR. He's a tiny slot receiver that doesn't catch the ball naturally. Getting the ball in his hands might be more of an issue than some realize.

For Chicago, I would say Tavon Austin all day.

As mentioned, you already have high hopes for Jeffery. As long as he stays in shape, and progresses under Brandon Marshall he will end up being a #1 WR in the NFL imo.

A guys like Tavon Austin can put someones offense on another level especially when you already have solid WR's in front of him like Chicago does right now.

Plus Tavon can run routes right away. Patterson not so much.

I don't understand anyone who claims Patterson is a better prospect, but the Bears (or any team) should take Austin. Sure, Austin is more of a prototypical slot receiver, but you always take the better player in the draft.

Did anyone even say this?

All I was saying is that Austin is a better fit for what the Bears need.

If the Bears were 100% set on drafting a receiver at #20 and Patterson and Austin were the only receivers they were considering, Patterson would most definitely be my choice.

Easily Tavon. For all teams, and especially DaBearz with their 2 big receivers already, and big MartyB at TE they added.
Tavon in the slot, working his quickness, would be ideal for Cutler to sling balls behind to waiting safeties.

Kind of doubt either will be there at #20, but first, for any team looking at both (like the Browns, ), I think it depends on what kind of offense your running and who your QB is. Austin should be a terror running similar quick hitting routes to Cruz/Amendola and a QB that excels at timing. Patterson would be a beast running downfield routes similar to Vincent Jackson/Dez Bryant, that take advantage of his size/speed, with a QB not afraid to take chances and throw 50/50 balls. What's getting a little overlooked, imo, is that both should be utilized in a Harvin like role and put in the backfield often. Hand offs, reverses, wildcat, dump offs, screens and the return game. If the offense isn't innovative and ignores this part of their skill set, it would be a big waste their talent.

Cutler made Eddie Royal look like a pro bowl WR in Denver. Austin could certainly be as good. If you want a slot guy, he's the one. Patterson is accustomed to catching rocket balls with a gunslinger and would be a needed field stretcher for the Bears offense. If you want an outside guy, then he's the answer.

Perhaps you have a hidden tape on Austin? Austin didn't have a problem with drops during the season, and he caught everything at the Combine.

Austin's hands aren't a problem.

I would hate to see how productive he was if he didn't have all those question marks. This is the craziest thing I have heard this offseason.

You're right, he's a totally flawless prospect. Nobody should ever question anything about him and the Chiefs would be crazy not to pick him #1.

If anything, Patterson is the prospect I need to see more of. I've seen Tavon. His college tape is breathtaking. His ability to cut at full speed is second to none. But people get too excited over guys like Tavon and they don't ask themselves what Tavon can realistically do in an NFL offense. West Virginia had absolutely zero problem getting the ball into his hands with a bunch of stuff that doesn't really translate to the NFL - bubble screens, jet sweep shovel passes, etc against embarrassingly bad Big XII defenses that never have any interest in jamming/tackling anyone. And yes, there is most likely plenty of readily available tape with Austin allowing the ball to get into his body rather than snatching the ball out of the air, and as a result double catching or dropping the ball, etc. He doesn't always do a good job of tracking the ball in the air, and he certainly doesn't make many contested catches. I don't think he's Percy Harvin because I thought of Harvin as a natural WR that can make plays anywhere on the field, while I think of Austin as a natural RB whose ability will be most valuable in the slot. I don't see a scenario where he can be anything but a slot receiver and a gadget running back.

With all that said, I don't even dislike Tavon. Never said I did. But don't think I see the limitless potential that others do, and I certainly don't trust my Bears to use him correctly.

Alshon Jeffery is in Florida training this offseason with Brandon Marshall who is a fitness nut, so I am not worried about what type of shape he is in for this season.

Patterson is a boom or bust player who has Julio ceiling, but a Robert Meachem floor. He played 1 year of major college football and he is a raw outside threat.

Austin would add a dimension to the Bears offense they don't have. With Jeffery and Marshall on the outside they have 2 6'4' WRs that can catch the ball.

Austin adds a dimension that they do not have and could be a Percy Harvin, Randall Cobb type player for them.

Trestman is also known as an innovative thinker on offense and he may like the contrast of Austin.

And not that this matters but Trestman had a done of these little West Virginia guys on his Als team, Avon Couburne and Noel Devine.

because he is one and the reason he went to wvu

he was a highly recruited RB in high school, but most teams projected him as a slot; wvu was one of, if not the only school that told him he would play RB

he played WR his 1st 2 years as we had noel devine and we needed austin on the field; come his junior year, holgorsen is hired and brings in the air raid and keeps him at WR

thats why he looks like a RB when he has the ball in his hands
