That was 12 years ago, and he was also .500 overall in the Big XII, to say nothing of him hitting it up with frat girls as a married man.

He's also 57. The biggest strike against Tubby was that he was over 60 and just didn't seem to care anymore. I want to hire someone not a day over 50.

Why? It was made pretty clear in the local media that he needed a sweet 16 run to keep his job, and even then it wasn't a 100% guarantee. He hasn't finished above .500 in Big ten play since he's been here and this year was his first tourney win.

And Tyus was a pipe dream anyway, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis have always been more realistic options from that class.

The local media never has a clue what they were talking about.

Tubby took Minnesota to the tourney three times in six years. For Minnesota, that's a miracle if it doesn't involve cheating.

When we started to expect .500 in the Big Ten I don't know.

Going from being in the top 10 to losing 11 out of 16 was kind of a death wish. This team had so much wasted potential.

If he had the complete lack of talent that Monson had when he was here the 3 tourneys in 6 years thing would be more impressive. He had the talent to do more than that, and his teams got worse as the season went on year in and year out.

A coach with a basic understanding of a halfcourt offense that isn't run by your average 6th grade team would have done a lot more with these teams.

He had that talent because kids wanted to play for Tubby Smith. These things don't exist in a vacuum.

And that's a fair point, but if you don't do anything worthwhile with it does it really matter?

I just don't buy this idea that it's impossible to have sustained success at a school like Minnesota, especially because the in state HS talent has been quietly very solid for a while now. There are a lot of big conference schools who haven't been to a final four since we were there (it happened damnit), and that didn't come with a coach with a Tubby Smith-sized name.

I would be all for Anthony Grant as our next coach.

Minnesota isn't a very intriguing school to go to right now for basketball. They're a middle of the pack school in the conference and the facilities are terrible for a school of that size. Are there any plans to add onto Bierman and/or provide the Gopher athletes with more?

No, I don't either. But if Minnesota wants to be more of a basketball school they need to invest the resources in it.

Frankly, I think that would make some sense. We're not going to win the Big Ten in football, probably ever. But there's no reason why we couldn't compete in a major metropolitan area like the Twin Cities in basketball. But we need a practice facility, and probably a new arena as well. Right now, Minnesota wants to be a school that is alright at a lot of things, and really good at hockey and the non-revenue sports, especially wrestling. It's been that way for as long as I can remember, though the new AD's emphasis on basketball may change that.

Someone should be all over Fred Hoiberg from Iowa State.

UCLA or Minnesota.

He would be my first choice even over Shaka.

Terrible is an overstatement. What they have for football is good.

The short answer is yes, however, the big thing now is to build a basketball only practice facility and improve some of the offices.

He may be more likely to head to the NBA. Sounds like there will be opportunities there for him if he wants them.

Flip Saunders has been getting a lot of buzz for Minny's coaching job too. You would think his NBA connections would help with recruiting.

He's a popular one on the Twin Cities sports radio
