I'm going to do a full update from scratch with whatever information is available this evening. After that, the updates are done.

With free agency starting at midnight, things are going to be way too hot and heavy and concrete contract information's going to be scarce. It'll be too much of a pain in the ass to keep up with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the past 10-15 years, the cap has gone up somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10 and 15 million a year. This year, it only increased by 3 million and we are just beginning to see the results. Any team that was near the cap limit is clearly in trouble and forced to readjust their salary structure and make cuts.

In previous years, the added cap money made it easy for capped out teams to meet payroll, it appears, those years may be gone forever and a new reality has entered the scene.

Was the last update you did for Dallas before or after they did the last few round of restructures with Ratliff & Scandrick & cutting Conner? I am just curious so I know what level of depressed to take it to.

You're roughly 2.5 under the cap as of this minute. I advise not going to "in the red" depressed, but still pretty depressed.

Spotrac have updated Dallas' cap figure to $1.57m under the cap and that's after the two restructures and cutting Connor.

The bad news: The restructuring means Ratliff's cap number jumps from $4.072m this season to $8.232m in 2014. Scandrick's cap figure doubles from approx $2.8m to $5.6m in 2014.

Looks like the Saints were the last team to get back under the cap before yesterday's deadline after Will Smith ($6M) and Jon Vilma ($4.9M) accepted big pay cuts.

Vilma reduced his base salary from $4.8M to $1M, and removed a $1.1M roster bonus. Smith reduced his $9M base salary down to $3M.

Antonio Cromartie reduced his 2013 base salary from $7M to $840K. The Jets converted the difference plus a $2.3M roster bonus into an $8.46M signing bonus. The bad news is his Cap Figure for 2014 is nearly $15M.

Poor Jets. Oh well. Thats what teams get when they do stupid crap or hold onto guys year after year when they should just release them instead. Doing what the Jets, Steelers, Cowboys, etc. did doesnt accomplish anything as every year they're in the same situation. Better off dumping all the high salary in one year, take the cap hits and rebuild through the draft until the cap hits clear.

Mario Manningham took a paycut from 3.6 mil to 1.8 mil.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...-49ers-pay-cut

I'm happy he is sticking with the Niners, should pay dividends come playoff time when he is finally getting around to full go.

I believe the cap floor is cumulative over four years or so, meaning teams have to spend an average percentage of their cap over that span.

And don't forget Rolando McClain who would also add a further $10.895m to the Dead Money figure if he was released today. In all likelihood he'll be a June 1 cut which means that number will be reduced to about $3.955m for the 2013 cap (his $2.42m prorated bonus and $1.535m guaranteed salary), with the remaining $6.94m added as Dead Money in 2014.

Huff was given one of the two designated June 1 cuts that each team are allowed to use. That allows Huff to find a new team immediately instead of waiting for June when teams will have less to spend.

Basic Salary: $4m
Prorated Bonus: $3,288,750
Cap Figure: $7,288,750

The Raiders must keep Huff on their books until Jun 1st. Once that day arrives his $4m basic drops off the books and only his 2013 figure of $3,288,750 will count as Dead Money against this year's cap. The other two prorated bonus payments for 2014 and 2015 of $3,288,750 each will then be accelerated onto the 2014 cap - ($6,577,500).

Once Palmer is gone it will add a further $9.34m onto the Dead Money but as his Cap Figure is $15.35m, the Raiders will create another $6m in cap space (which they'll need and use on Matt Flynn and the rookie class).

Summary:
$29,759,889
plus $9.34m for Palmer
plus $3.288,750 for Huff on Jun 1st.

The Raiders will then have $42,388,639 in Dead Money with Huff's remaining $6,577,500 Dead Money going on the 2014 cap.

* If McClain is a Jun 1st cut that number jumps again to $46,343,639 for 2013 and the total 2014 Dead Money figure would be $13,517,500.

* It's very unlikely to happen but if McClain was released and is not a Jun 1st cut, then Oakland's 2013 Dead Money figure would be $53,283,639 with Huff's remaining $6,577,500 Dead Money on the 2014 cap.

How the hell do the Jaguars have over $24m in dead money? Who the hell have they had that was worth money? LOL.
I don't know everyone, but they cut Laurent Robinson one year into his deal that had like 14m guaranteed. they also cut Landry, idk what his contract was like but I think it's like 6m in dead money

Dead Money Hits include:

Laurent Robinson - $9m (cutting overpaid players 1 yr into a 4 yr deal will lead to this)
Dawan Landry - $3.9m
Clint Session - $3.6m
Mike Thomas - $3.6m
Aaron Kampman - $2.5m

Despite all that dead money the Jags still have $26m in cap space for 2013 because they rolled over $21.1m in unused cap space from last year.

Looks good on paper if Oakland had any base to build upon, but they don't, they are starting from scratch and could be again in the running for worst team in the NFL for the next 2 or 3 years. You cannot rebuild a team through FA, FA, if used properly, fills in the holes left on a competing team to take them to a higher level after the draft has given them a strong corps to build upon. Having money but no talent leads nowhere.

Oakland must now rebuild through the draft and looking at their base, it will be years before the draft gives them enough talent to be competitive. I wouldn't want my team to be in their position.
