They could have kept him. There were ways. Take a pay cut, cut him and re-sign him, restructure him somehow. There was a way to keep him if they wanted to.

So they pretty much just added another hole to a roster that has too many of them to begin with, and no picks to rebuild with.

And now they're gonna spend 6 million a season on what will either be a painfully average starting qb, or a backup qb who will hold a clipboard and provide no production on the field.

So yeah, long story short, I think that's a pretty dumb way to spend your money when you don't have any.

Yeah, but it's a great way to insure a top 5 pick in next year's draft:-)

Huff is still a very solid and versatile player but he's 30 years old on a rebuilding team with cap problems who was being paid like the 2nd coming of Ronnie Lott. He was due a $4m roster bonus on top of a $4m salary with a cap hit of $11.3m. That's far too much for a free safety on a team that's at least 3 years away from being competitive and is already paying big money to a younger Tyvon Branch at strong safety.

Cutting Huff works out for the best for both sides. The Raiders save themselves $8m in cash and cap space next season while looking to sign/draft a younger, much cheaper replacement. That money and cap space can be used to re-sign some of the young core they can build around like Veldheer and Houston when they become free agents. Huff has already earned serious coin and is at a point in his career where he's financially secure for life and can focus on playing for a Super Bowl ring in Baltimore.

Great point, they sure look like a team that will draft 1/2 for the next couple of years and provide them with a foundation for success.

The Raiders lead the 2013 Dead Money Rankings with over $50.31m. However they currently have $63.7m in cap space for 2014.
