Please list the 10 teams (or more?) that will finish above the 49ers in overall defense in 2013. I want to know exactly how many times to "lol" at you when I come back to this thread after the season ends.

Seriously. Wilis and Bowman are great. Justin Smith is great but older and injured. Aldon Smith is great with Justin Smith bnut doesn't look like a great one-on-one block beater.

That's about it in terms of above-average talent.
You do know Aldon was playing while injured in the last few games of the season?

You're contradicting what you said in your original post. Which means you're not using logic. You're basing this off something else, probably some kind of negative emotion.

Cool story OP. But the Niners defense is not headed for that steep of a decline with Fangio and 9 of 11 starters returning barring tons of injuries.

The Niners front seven is extremely disciplined and they're the best tackling defense in football.

The niners will have a good defense but I'm still not sold on Aldon smith as a premiere rusher. Justin smith's presence showed how much Aldon smith relied on him to free him up. In the playoffs it seemed like LTs just overpowered him and pushed him out of the way.

Niners will still be top 10 probably even higher. They have a ton of picks to improve the secondary ad add depth up front.

But the statement of them not inishing top 10 is bogus.

He has length, a good jump off the ball, closing speed, the ability to finish, functional strength, and a good array of pass rush moves. Plus he's beaten NFL tackles consistently at the NFL level. I'm not really sure why having Justin Smith next to him somehow negates all those abilities which are pretty clear to the visible eye.

You see where I find this enjoyable right?

11 guys on defense - more than half (majority) is 6

You listed....

Wait for it....

2.

Also, the point I made about Willis and Bowman, which I will make again, is what they do for the defense. You dismiss them because they play inside backer. They play every single down, BOTH of them, and they draw coverage responsibilities that other teams give to their secondary.

I believe it was Roddy White (?) that Atlanta was going to in the final moments of that NFCG and who was in coverage.... Navarro Bowman?

Speaking of the playoffs. I'm sorry the 49ers didn't shut out Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, and Joe Flacco. Certainly the Lions will be able to do that in 2-3 years - tell me if i'm doing the "projecting" thing right.

Just to be clear, Aldon Smith just had surgery to repair a torn labrum a few weeks ago. He played the last few games of the regular season and the playoffs with 1 shoulder. That is what derailed his record setting pace, not justin smiths injury. Although that obviously didnt help.

Because he was gassed, just as the rest of the front four were. Not to mentioned he was nursing a injured shoulder that he would have surgery to repair after the season. J. Smith, A. Smith, McDonald, A. Brooks....that was our pass-rush. And all those guys played nearly 90% of our defensive snaps last year.

Quote:
McDonald and Justin Smith had both played at least 85 percent of the defensive snaps through Week 15, which was when an arm injury forced Smith to the sideline until the playoffs. Tampa Bay (three) and New Orleans (two) were the only other teams with more than one defensive lineman logging 85-plus percent of his team's snaps to that point in the season. The Bucs and Saints had a combined seven other defensive linemen logging at least 30 percent of the snaps to that point. The 49ers had none.
http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/po...defensive-line

Too many ppl are basing what they saw in the post-season as some tell-tale sign of our defensive demise. I understand that's the last impression you saw from them but its not a true indictment of the overall picture....

Quote:
Letís take a closer look, comparing the 49ersí first 14 games with their last five.

1) Falling Behind in Games The 49ers scored first 10 times in their first 14 games. The 49ers were 10-3-1 in those games. But opponents scored first in each of the 49ersí last five games, with the 49ers going 3-2. And they were lucky to come back against Atlanta after trailing, 17-0.

2) Points Allowed The 49ers were the best in the N.F.L. in this category after 14 games, having allowed only 218 points (15.6) average. But the 49ers collapsed in their last five games, giving up 144 points (28.8 average).

3) Total Yards The 49ersí defense was second best in the league through 14 games, allowing an average of 293 yards. In their last five games, the 49ers allowed 1,804 yards, for an average of 360.8. The 49ers even allowed 262 yards to the offensively inept Arizona Cardinals in their season finale.

4) Third-Down Conversions This was another stark difference. The 49ersí defense ranked second in the N.F.L. in third-down efficiency through 14 games, allowing only 57 conversions in 190 attempts. In their last five games, the 49ers had trouble getting stops, allowing 33 conversions on 62 attempts, for a stunning percentage of 53.2. Whether that total is affected by lack of pressure on quarterbacks, missed assignments or poor tackling, it played a huge part in the defenseís lackluster finish to the season.
http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2...ply-wore-down/

Our starters across the board are fine. We need better depth to keep guys fresh upfront for a grueling 16 game season and possible post-season run. That's what this draft will be about. I trust Baalke to get it done.

This entire thread was based upon the 49ers "ranking" on defense, correct?

The Pittsburgh Steelers had the #1 "ranked" defense in 2012. Does anyone think they have a better defense than the 49ers, Texans, Seahawks, Bengals, etc???

I don't care what they rank as long as they keep playing at a high level.

Even our post-season woes were blown out of proportion.

We held the Ravens to 274 yards passing, at 8.3 yards a completion. They rushed for 93 yards on 35 attempts for a paltry, 2.7 yard average. It was our third down defense that did us in, allowing them to convert 9-16 chances and KO return for a TD.

GB only threw for 248 yards against us, 6.4 average per completions. And if it wasn't for a meaningless drive late 4th quarter, after the game was already decided, those numbers would be considerably less. Our problem there was that they ran the ball on us surprisingly well, at 6.4 yards a rush....they just didn't run enough, with only 16 attempts and 5 of those were from Rodgers and Cobb.

Only real game the defense struggled mightily was against the Falcons. Giving up nearly 400 yards passing and a 55% conversion rate on 3rd down, wont get it done in most instances. But that's partly why they went after Aso. More wingspan on the outside so Terrell Brown isn't stuck having to defend jumpballs against Julio Jones.

Well, damn. Maybe we can get Clowney to upgrade this terrible defense. It's our only hope.
