Default Which Teams Make Sense for JaMarcus Russell?

It seems clear that he'll be brought into camp, and if gets himself focused and into shape, the physical tools were never the problem in Oakland. Personally, if he gets back into football shape after years away from the game, that alone is an accomplishment worthy of attributing to a newfound drive and commitment. But what teams would want him? It actually kind of scares me to think Arizona might sign him, because if he does turn it around, and say they let him sit behind Carson Palmer for a year to get re-acclimated, Russell throwing deep to Larry Fitzgerald and Malcolm Floyd is a pretty impressive trio of athletic upside. I also think it would make sense for the Browns to bring him in to push Weeden; neither Palmer nor Weeden are scramblers, but have good downfield throwing ability, like Russell, so those offenses should already be schematic fits, not to mention the fact that their quarterback situations are less than ideal.

I think Baltimore, Houston and Tampa Bay also make some sense for him, schematically, although those teams aren't intently looking for a quarterback right now. (Houston and Tampa Bay could have an eye on the future, though.) If JaMarcus isn't necessarily looking to compete for a starting job, I think those would be good places for him to get back (back might be a stretch) into the NFL mindset. It easy to make the jokes, but it sure looks like he's making a real attempt at taking his opportunity seriously and putting his athletic talents to use, and those talents are immense. So if he can get his head in it, he's worth a shot. So kind of in a best-case scenario, meaning we're taking it for granted that he's legitimately focused and taking his task seriously, what places might be a good landing spot? Or even better, is there anyone out there who's willing to openly say that they want their team to bring in JaMarcus? Like I said, if I was a Cardinals fan I think I'd approve of them bringing him into camp to see how he looks. He's not a fit for the Seahawks, though.

Russell is a long ways from even just competing for a roster spot on a professional team.

This guy is just trying to get back in the league, he'll sign for nothing and be mostly incentive-based.

All 32 teams in the NFL should be looking into him to at bring into camp. If he doesn't try during camp - cut him. If he shows any sign of off the field issues - cut him. Give him 0 leash. The guy should know if he slips up once he's gone. If he has one little sign of being a locker room problem, one little sign of having a poor attitude - cut him.

There should be little to no risk, and huge reward for anyone who gives him a chance

Jamarcus is too quiet of a personality to make problems in the locker room.

If he puts half an effort forth, he'll make a roster easily.

Sean Payton, Pete Carmichael, and Drew Brees as mentors for a while would probably be a good thing, even if he never does anything for us.

It's great that he wants to make a comeback and is working hard, but that doesn't mean he can be a competent NFL QB. He's almost 28 and hasn't played since the 2009 season, in which he was awful. The last time he tried out for teams he wasn't signed.

Branden Weeden was the most hilarious first round pick ever at that age.

I actually would like the Browns to pick up Russell. I think he would fit this system that Chud and Norv are bringing in. And it would give him two guys who can work to get the best out of their QB's. With that being said, I believe Weeden will play great if play to his strengths (out of the shotgun).

I vaguely remember some of Russell's best (relative term here) performances being against Norv's Chargers... makes sense.

Seriously though, I'd give him a long, hard look. The guy's problems were mental, but he showed some flashes of what he could be. And his mental busts on the field were at least in some part due to the one main problem of his career - he didn't put ANY work into it. Think about it, when the game was just 'show up and throw' in college, he was great.

Perhaps there's a small chance that given a 2nd opportunity he'll get in shape and commit himself to the game mentally and emotionally.

He was rich, young and stupid - a fatal combination.

I think there's a slim chance he could be an amazing reclamation project. Again, I believe his growth was stunted because he didn't work or care (and the organization/situation/contract he was drafted to didn't help). Maybe he'll change his ways if someone gives him a shot (Mike Williams... lasted for a year but it happened).

I'd invite him to a camp. What do you have to lose?

For responses to ^, I'll only accept funny .gifs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I keep thinking about this situation and re-evaluating it hoping I'm missing someone but the sad fact is that the QB draft class this year SUCKS. If there's ever a year to tank, it's this year in hopes of landing Bridgewater or Johnny Football at the top of next year. And by tank, I mean as a first-year coach just try your hardest with giving Gabbert a final shot or rolling with Chad Henne or Matt Moore because you truly liked them more than the rookies available in this class. Don't just draft a guy to draft one and say 'OK now we have a future franchise QB! He's not good but at least we have one!'

Not hating on Jamarcus, but the NFL doesn't need him.
He should cross his fingers and hope Arians brings him to camp in Arizona and tries to salvage the guy..

You've nailed the other part of it gpngc: this year's quarterback class is terrible, so those teams (AZ, CLE) who really, really need a quarterback simply have nothing to lose by bringing him in. If he does nothing for them, if they have a terrible season, there look to be a couple dynamic passers in next year's draft. (Bridgewater, Manziel possibly, I personally think Tajh Boyd could've been the no. 1 overall pick this year had he come out, some people really like Fales). This is the perfect season for Russell to attempt a comeback, because Arizona and Cleveland aren't just looking for a starter, they're looking for competition, and Russell offers essentially unlimited physical upside, at least as far as arm talent goes. If he sucks, cut him. No one's going to give him a big contract, anything (or rather, what) he gets will be a "show-me" contract.

I think my personal feeling is that he wouldn't beat out either Weeden or Palmer in Celveland or Arizona, respectively (like, I would bet on him being a backup if I had to lay money down), but in both cases I think he'd provide valuable competition. At the very least, he'll challenge the secondary deep and be able to show rare velocity running the scout team offense against the starting D, and at most he's going to make Palmer and Weeden realize, "You know, there is a reason this guy went no. 1 overall, and it's not simply that Al Davis was crazy." as they watch the kind of throws he makes. If he keeps slimming down, too, he can move a bit. He's never been a scrambler, but it seems like amidst all the fat jokes people forget he could move around a bit in college, and is a lot of ways was kind of like a big version of Matthew Stafford. He's just the consumate example of a prospect who had all the tools but not the mindset to succeed, so if he's got the mindset... that's the solution to the problem, and makes him a guy I'd certainly be willing to take a chance on, in the imaginary world of my head in which I am the general manager of an NFL franchise.

If he kept his weight down, showed he was committed to the film room and working hard this time around.....Some team will give him a look - non-guaranteed contract of course.

I'd take him on the Jets as a offensive lineman.

Russell started training at 310. He's now just above 280. The guy needs to lose another 25 pounds before he can move the way he needs to in the NFL.

Why? Because he is working out and losing weight?

A scout tells CBS Sports that there's a "good chance" free agent JaMarcus Russell gets another shot in the NFL.
"I've been following his comeback story pretty closely," the scout said. "I think a lot of teams are." Russell has been out of the league since the Raiders gave up on him following the 2009 season. He's working his way back into shape, reportedly losing more than 30 pounds off his previously rotund 300-plus pound frame. Still, it would be a leap of faith for a team to think Russell can help them. Apr 4 - 12:18 PM

There's also no reason not to give him a look He's gonna throw to Fitz. I'm sure NFL teams will be there.

The Jets have already been linked to him.

He has an amazing arm. Worth a look.

That is pretty much all he has going for him, his arm. The only reason he's attempting to come back is because he's broke. He has no pride, so I wouldn't waste my time on him. I'd rather take a flier on someone who isn't a known turd.

How is it a comeback when JaWalrus was never any good to begin with? Like what's he coming back to? Sucking?
