Patriots trade out of draft's first day

The New England Patriots opted not to make their first-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft, #29 overall, instead packaging the pick with their third-round choice, #91 overall, in order to acquire three picks from the Tennessee Titans: Tennessee's second, third, and fifth-round choices (#40, #70, and #142 overall.) With the 29th overall selection, the Titans opted to draft Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert, considered one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the class.

The trade leaves New England with five draft picks remaining: the #40, #70, and #142 choices acquired in the trade, as well as the Patriots' original second-and-seventh-round picks, #59 and #235, respectively. The organization entered the draft with only four selections, so it's possible that replenishing their choices was the plan all along. With three second-day draft picks in hand - #40, #59, and #70 - it's appears that New England will be active in rounds two and three.

Jaguars Strengthen Front Seven on Day One

On the first day of the NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars and new head coach Gus Bradley focused heavily on defense. Bradley knows from his time in Seattle that defensive success starts with controlling the line of scrimmage and pressuring the quarterback and he now has two pieces to dominate in those areas. With the second overall pick, the Jaguars took Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd. Floyd is expected to play as a three-technique for the Jaguars where he will be asked to stop the run and rush the passer.

After a surprising fall, the Jaguars made an aggressive trade back into the first for Georgia linebacker slash defensive end hybrid Jarvis Jones. The Jags sent the St. Louis Rams picks 33, 94, and 179 for pick 22 and a 2014 sixth-rounder. Gus Bradley says that Jones is a perfect fit as a situational pass rusher a la Bruce Irvin in Seattle.

The Jags only have two selections remaining in the 2012 draft - numbers 64 and 135. We figure that they will use the picks to add depth and potential in the defensive secondary and possibly add a backup running back as insurance for the somewhat fragile Maurice Jones-Drew

Disgruntled Davone On The Block

With the whispers continuously getting louder within the Miami Dolphins organization, the team finally ended speculation about Davone Bess' future with the team... There is none. With the 82nd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected slot receiver Ryan Swope from Texas A&M University, effectively signaling the end of Bess' 5-year tenure with the team.

GM Jeff Ireland confirmed as much after the selection. Saying that Davone has been officially placed on the trading block in Miami, available to the highest bidder. And the winning bid is believed to be between a 3rd and 4th round selection in the current draft.

Ireland says trade talks are ongoing and that the Dolphins are open for business, also indicating that the team is looking to move Bess, along with possibly even future draft picks to acquire 2013 draft selections. This appears to be a Super Bowl or bust year for Ireland and the Dolphins Organization and they appear to be all-in for 2013.
