Default Is Ogletree the Scariest Prospect?

Alec Ogletree - LB - Player NFL Network's Mike Mayock says he is "scared to death" of Georgia LB Alec Ogletree as a first-round pick due both to off- and on-field concerns.
Ogletree is a candidate to slide out of the first round because his character is a nightmare. "Im scared to death about Ogletree, both for on- and off-the-field issues," Mayock said. "When you put the tape on, he has no clue what hes doing. He looks like a safety that somebody plugged inside at inside linebacker. He just runs around." Mayock also called Ogletree's work ethic and passion for the game "question marks right now."

Yeah I'm not really impressed with him either. I keep catching myself trying to sell myself on him bc he is fast, bc I hated Zach Brown last year and he wound up being good, and bc the Giants need a linebacker.

But my gut tells me he's just not very good.

And if these character concerns are true, then I definitely don't want him.

The off field stuff scares me as well.

But the guy can make plays on the field and if he does not know what he is doing then he is a SCARY athlete because otherwise you don't get 111 tackles in 9 games in the SEC.

You are not a star in the SEC by accident.

If Nawricki had said this, would he be called racist for it?

I don't know enough to make that call, but he's in the top 5-10.

Probably from a combination of where he goes and his risks, yes. But from a pure character standpoint, Mathieu gets the #1 slot for me. I've heard him impress in interviews and I've heard himact like an idiot. He's got a bad vibe that seems potentially infectious to me, but you get him in the right locker room and I think he can be a really good player.

Since you're smart enough to be sarcastic, I'll assume you're smart enough to understand that Ogletree has a documented track record of screw ups at Georgia.
It's fair game to judge a player's behavior on and off the field.
It's not fair to play amateur shrink with a prospect you haven't met, or simply to flat out make up 'facts' that have been refuted as completely wrong.

Welcome to the real world. Bigots and sexists actually do exist. Some aren't even aware there's anything wrong with the way they think. Consider yourself lucky never to have met any and be glad racism only exists an abstract concept in your daily life.

BTW no one on this board ever called Nawrocki a racist. Except you J-Mike.lol

Mayock is covering his ass because the scouting community whiffed horribly on Rolando McClain.
I don't think Ogletree is going to be a headcase like McClain has proven himself to be. Wherever he's drafted, he's going to be starting no later than his 2nd year and probably be a starter for a decade.

I still remember many reports had McClain as one of the safest picks his draft year and the leader of not only that Alabama D, but a team leader as well.

Exactly my feelings as well. I hated Brown last year, but he turned out to be a really nice player. I just hate how soft Ogletree plays.

Geno Smith.

I think taking the QB, with a high 1st rnd pick, that you are not sure can play in the NFL will always be more scary than a defensive player with possible off the field concerns.

You also gotta consider the talent around him, he had a massive Dline that kept him clean and allowed him to clean up the mess behind him.

In college you can kind of get away with a defense that funnels everything inside and allows 1 super star to free lance and do his thing, as long as all other 10 guys play their assignment.

In the NFL, this is much harder to do, and offenses can take advantage of systems like this.... unless your extremely talent (i.e, Ray Lewis and Urlacher around 10 years ago), free lancing just does not happen in the NFL.

Once he adds the weight/mass and fits into a scheme I can see him developing nicely. However, if you need an immediate contributor, he'll surely disappoint

I dig Ogletree. He has the tools to be an elite linebacker. Dude can cover and cover ground. Rushing the pass rusher and getting off blocks are a concern, but he has the talent to develop. He is near the top of my Vikings wishlist.

I like Mayock, but his criticism of Zach Brown was lazy. If you have the god given ability to run around blocks instead of taking them on to make plays then why not? Ray Lewis made a hell of a career out of it... in fact if your LBer is constantly going head to head with NFL o-lineman he probably isnt much of an athlete or a pretty **** linebacker.

He makes stupid decisions. Right before his first start as a college player he was arrested for stealing a motor scooter helmet. He also got a DUI just before the Combine. I'm not sure what else. I think he is a good kid, but just doesn't think sometimes.

Completely agree. He blew up plays regularly, even if he "didn't know what he was doing," his instincts were good enough for him to put himself in a good position more often than not. He elevated that defense and the players around him to greater success with his versatility.

He does need to be coached up in aspects of his game - he needs to be more disciplined on gap assignments and refine his tackling technique (stop lunging so much). But his potential, when mixed with the things he does well already make him one heck of a prospect. I doubt the Texans will go this direction, but I would love to see Ogletree paired with Cushing inside on our defense.

Ogletree will be a stud as long as he doesn't allow his off-field issues to derail his career. He's made some dumb decisions and has maturity issues, so he needs to go to a supportive environment preferably with strong veteran leadership in the locker room.

He's an ILB with zero pass rush skills, which means that in the NFL all he will be doing is tackling running backs and occasionally trying to cover TEs and RBs in the flat.

He played on a STACKED defense that had tons of guys making plays around him.

He has character issues out the wazoo.

If you're a GM and you pick this guy any higher than the early 3rd round, you're an idiot.

He may be the perfect type of player the Rams need because of Wilson and Kaepernick.

Ogletree is a straight line runner like ernie simms was, his only shot is a WILL because he needs to stay untouched to be effective. If you watch the film (even just focusing on Jarvis Jones) you think wow this ogletree guy is all over the place, but he is literally taken out of the play as soon as someone gets a hand on him even if he makes it look like hes a terror out there. Hes also very clumsy in traffic, tripping all the time when trying to make plays in a cluster of players...hes the anti sean weatherspoon or arthur brown when it comes to playing in traffic

Ogletree needs to stay untouched to be effective - he is literally taken out of the play as soon as someone gets a hand on him
^ Very well put.
I agree 100%, I can't see him fitting in any 3-4 scheme due to this inability to disengage. But in a 4-3 scheme where he's able to flow sideline to sideline he should flourish.
He's the kind of prospect that needs time, time, and more time. If coached properly, he does have potential to be a starter in the league.
