I could easily see the Chargers having a huge bounce-back year with Phillip Rivers putting up MVP numbers and a young defense with some playmakers coming into their own (Melvin Ingram, Kendall Reyes, Corey Liuget).
Chargers winning the Super Bowl is actually pretty realistic in my mind.
I've been barking up that tree for the past two years.
I predicted a Falcons-Chargers SB before the season. I said that there is an incorrect perception that the Chargers aren't talented anymore.
That perception was correct. I was incorrect.
They have a poor OL and lost so many good weapons:
- Sproles to NO
- VJax to TB
- Gates to father time/injuries (he's slow, let's be honest)
- Mathews to injuries/failed hype/OL didn't help (on second thought he's not even good)
And they just don't have any impact players on D. Phillips and Weddle are good players, but other than that there's just not enough playmakers. Neither English or Ingram have big-time pass rush capability. They haven't been able to hit on a big-time player in the first round in years. Their CBs are just so average.
And Norval just wasn't getting it done. It was time for a change.
I think they can bounce back, but they just don't have much talent. They need a big-time draft.
And I worry about their draft too. They are going to have to use a high pick (or two) on OL, so the defense probably won't get a huge boost. AND they will likely draft a RB - another pick that won't be used on D.
I like Rivers, and I think with a full season of DX, a better o-line, and a new life without Norval, he'll have a bounce-back. But even he regressed pretty bad the past two years - very concerning even with surrounding issues.
I like their coach and QB - so that's a start. I'll probably pick them to be good again in a pretty weak AFC and they'll probably disappoint me again.
