Default First Round Thoughts

What I like;

From 1997, no OG was taken in the top 10 until this year when 2 went. And I really like the fit and value for both teams. The Cardinals offensive line was very poor last year and it would have been easy to see the run on OTs and look elsewhere, but Cooper and Warmack should have been atop their list. Warmack to Tennessee should form a terrific OG pairing with Levitre.

Lane Johnson in Chip Kellyís offense. This guy ran faster than some LBs and TEs and you know Chip Kelly is going to put pressure on opposing defenses by keeping the tempo up. Johnson is also a nasty blocker who can move guys.

Oaklandís first round. Regardless if you thought Hayden deserved such a high spot, the Raiders did and were rumoured to be taking him at 3 if they couldnít trade. Yes they didnít get full value for the trade with Miami, but right now Oakland needs quantity and quality. They got the guy they coveted and added an early 2nd round pick.

Where Sharrif Floyd went. I like Floyd and think he can be a good player, but I really couldnít buy him as a top 3 pick. I had him ranked in the late teens based on his ability to get up field and disrupt, but this is a guy who is a little light, has short arms, can get killed by double teams and lacked production. Upside had him a first round pick. Media had him a top 5 pick.

DeAndre and Andre. Nuke Hopkins in Houston is a terrific fit. This guy is pro ready and can be a great WR. He will be a perfect complement for Andre Johnson who will draw the attention. As things stand he could be my bet for OROTY.

Datone Jones in Green Bay. When the Packers were on the clock I texted my brother saying itís going to be a defensive lineman and hoped it was going to be Margus Hunt so that Jones could fall some more. Jones is just a flat out beast and could be the steal of the draft.

What I didnít like;

Jacksonville taking Joeckel. I understand why they did it however I donít like it. This is a team with a myriad of needs and this wreaks of decision makers trying to create for their below par QB. I think they should know what they have in Gabbert right now. Iím not saying draft a QB in the first but there were guys who could make more impact. Dion Jordan also fits what Gus Bradley likes on defense.

Miami taking Jordan. I just donít see the fit here. Miami are moving to a 43 and already have Cam Wake at DE. Do they project Jordan to be another dominant rusher? Because thatís not what you see on tape.

Jerry Jones losing his mind and thinking it was the third round already. Frederick is a nic player who can block, but the first round was way too high for him. They could have taken a guy like Elam or Cyprien and still taken Frederick with their 2nd pick.

Things that left me scratching my head;

The Jets drafting Sheldon Richardson. I wonít deny it I may have been a little pissed when the Jets drafted Richardson who was my top overall prospect. But I just donít see the fit here...like at all. If the Jets play a 3 man front they have their last 3 first round picks in Richardson, Coples and Wilkerson. Who plays where? Richardson and Wilkerson could play 5 but where does that leave Coples. None of them should be playing the nose. In 4 man fronts Wilkerson moves to DT and obviously so will Richardson, but thatís a relatively light front. Star Lotulelei would have made far more sense at this pick, although if the Jets went off value then it should have been Richardson.

The Patriots moving down when their board available looked like a Christmas wish list. Carradine, Woods, Hunter, Taylor, Elam, Patterson, Allen all available and all at positions of need. Although itís not so much the Pats moving down that surprised me, a blind man could have seen it coming with their lack of picks. It was the package the Vikings gave up. A 2, 3, 4 and 7 is a lot of picks. It puts the Patriots in position to wheel and deal today, but it pretty much ends Minnesotaís draft with Floyd, Rhodes and Patterson, which I suppose is a pretty nice haul overall.

Top available;

1. Cornellius Carradine
2. Geno Smith
3. Arthur Brown
4. Jamar Taylor
5. Matt Barkley
6. Robert Woods
7. Keenan Allen
8. Damontre Moore
9. Zach Ertz
10. Jordan Poyer

Really like the Eifert to Cincy pick. Giving Andy Dalton every chance to succeed. That's how you support your young QB. Listening Carolina?

Minnesota still has a 4th, 5th, 6th, and two 7ths. I keep reading they pretty much gave away their draft for Patterson. They didn't.

The highlight of the first round was the Patriots trade.

All that set up with Joe Andruzzi and that jersey then the Patriots not giving a single **** and trading out of the pick.

Made me laugh.

I knew they had a few extra picks but damn I didn't know they had that many. Even at that, if they get one guy from those picks to be a contributor then it's probably a good thing. I still think it was a lot to give up. In this draft you can get a very good WR at 52, or even move up 15 slots for a 4th for Hunter, Woods etc. The 2nd and 3rd is where the value is and the Vikes moved out to grab a guy who has serious questions over his ability to pick up an offense. I can understand why they did it, I just think it was a big risk

No doubt it was a lot to give up. Moved up 25 picks, into the 1st for a 3rd, 4th, and 7th and honestly, I will take that. The FO must have loved Patterson and he certainly has the potential to be a gamechanger. I love the idea of having Patterson and Wright playing at the same time. Both are electric with the ball and we really open things up for the offense. Needs at this point are G, MLB, and S but there are already guys at each position on the team who can start. I am happy giving up the picks and ending up with three guys who could end up being the best player from their position to come out of this draft.

Thankyou for clarifying. I really thought they gave everything away which although they landed some great players, it seemed that would be a bit drastic. A 4th rounder can still fill as depth and potentially start.

There was a lot of talk about how many picks the Niners had but the Vikings had a ton of picks as well. I know a lot of people were not aware. This is a deep draft. I really do like a starter at MLB and G can be found in rounds 4 and 5.

I also can't rule out next years 1st being traded for a second so the team can nab Te'o. I would not be a fan of the pick personally as I was hoping to root against Te'o but I can't rule it out after all the talk about how much the Vikes love him as a prospect. I am thinking that was just a smokescreen though.

I have a feeling the Jags prefer Barkley but this has been a weird draft and most we have been hearing has been horsecrap. I think Carradine fits what the Jags do as well

Yeah everyone linked Nassib to the Bills, then Barkley, and also a little bit of Geno, but never EJ, and they snap take EJ, so who knows at this point.

Agree that I don't see the scheme fit for some of these players.
I hope Miami doesn't see Jordan as a 43 DE like Javon Kearse.

I'm assuming no mention of Buffalo and EJ means you are in wait and see approach towards the pick. I can appreciate that.

You could definitely argue, though, that the strength of this draft is the second and third rounds, and this is a pretty deep WR class. I'm not sure Minnesota wouldn't have been better off with a Robert Woods or Keenan Allen in round 2 (use a smaller number of those traded picks to move up if you have to.)

Why not take a better player though? If you have the picks and not that many needs, why sit put and take a guy that you have 4th or 5th or maybe even 6th on your board at WR when you can have your #2 guy(which the Vikings have basically stated that Patterson was behind Austin). The only real pressing needs the Vikings have still are at MLB, OG(not a huge need as Johnson and Fusco are capable starters), and then a 3rd down RB(although Gerhart is signed through this year). They signed Lawrence Jackson today who provides further depth at DE, and they still have 5 picks remaining.

Hey Buffalo fans, screw what people are saying. Your staff liked a QB and you went for it. That takes balls. It's an exciting time to be a Bills fan, and you just got an exciting QB to watch on sundays.

Baffles me that Richardson is your No. 1 player yet Star makes more sense?

They Jets aren't an exclusive 2-gap assignment team. They'll find ways to use Richardson and all three of them at the same time (maybe an even front with Coples down or up).

Wilkerson and Richardson can both play the 1-technique.

You can never have enough DL especially against today's up tempo offenses. These guys aren't Madden characters with unlimited stamina, depth is important especially at DL, and he was the best player on their board. Period.

I agree with this. Had Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Tom Brady,or Drew Brees been picked in the first we all would have laughed and then eaten our crow years later. Some of us are the same people that loved JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Vince Young, Matt Leinart etc. and bash the Manuel pick like we know anything. QB is the hardest position in the NFL to project, you've got to have balls to take one, be it 1st or 31st.

It isn't a fit now, but do you really think they'll keep Rex Ryan and his scheme around when we go 4-12 this season? Either this year or next, I imagine the Jets will be a 4-3 team, as Coples already wasn't a fit on a 3 man front, so now we have 2 1st round picks that are better suited for a 4-3, the writing is on the wall. I also don't see how Richardson and Wilkerson with Coples at LE would be a 'light front' last I checked Coples was 285, Wilkerson was 315, and Richardson a touch over 300, how exactly is that light? Seems standard for a 4-3 team to me, with Barnes/Pace at 260 to move to RE.

they still need an outside pass rusher. if they want to go crazy on defense carradine or lemonier would be nice picks. rex ryan in charge of that defense would be scary.
