Mccarron is a very nice QB prospect. I think he might go top 10 if things go right for him. He's what people think Barkley is.

I think McCarron is the best QB Saban has ever had at any school. I just see an NFL starter when I watch him play. He's not being bailed out by his WRs, he's making plays for the most part and his wideouts get the glory.

Again Andre Luck played behind a 'great' college Oline at Stanford. It still doesn't mean he lacks timing or holds the ball too long.

You don't watch McCarron play and think 'damn he could make a sandwich in that pocket.' He makes his read and gets the ball out.

Russell Wilson played behind a great oline at Wisconsin. Very similar numbers to McCarron.

If he shows scouts he's got solid arm strength or better, I think his stock is going to skyrocket, especially if he leads a young Alabama team to a 3rd NC.

If the biggest negative you have against a player is he played on a good football team, at some point you have to wonder maybe a guy like MCarron was part of the reason they were so good.

I am waiting to see McCarron put a team on his back instead of riding his defense and run game. The one game last year they needed him to do that he failed against Texas A&M. He could be a serviceable QB on a team with strong defense and good run game, but he is no where near a franchise QB.

How are we going to sit here and knock a QB for playing on stacked teams? QB is the most important position on said team. If we can fairly evaluate the defensive talent coming out of Alabama then we can do the same for McCarron. Let's move past the wins, national championships, teammates, and such and focus on things that he does as an individual. How quick is his release, hows his accuracy, arm strength, footwork, reading defenses, reacting to pressure, touch, decisionmaking, work ethic, etc

You won't see him do that at Bama bevause he'll almost never have to. No fault of his own, it's the way the program is built.

You do have to take the talent around him into account though. You just can't ignore it. Remember how Lendale White looked like the next coming of Jim Brown with that O-line at USC?? It's like when we all realized Tom Brady was legitimately awesome when he was taking NE to the Superbowl with Gaffney/Branch as his WR's.

I like McCarron but I still want to see more from him.

I'd like to see just a little bit more out of him. A little more zip on the ball and start using all his receivers not just tossing it up to #9 to run under.

I'm with the comment that said he'll have a chance in the All Star games and combine to elevate his stock. In hindsight he looks as good a prospect as Blaine Gabbert did.

His ceiling in the NFL is Frank Reich. Not a bad thing, but nothing you spend more than a late 3rd round pick on.

Sounds exactly like JaMarcus Russell at LSU. How'd that pay dividends for him in the draft?
That's right though, JaMark was big and could launch the ball real far.

You guys want to see him throw some more Ints in quarters 1, 2 & 3 so they get into more close games, get down, so then he can show you some more "gall" late in games?
That may work for some QB's ........

Do you mean kind of like taking over ball being down against LSU with 1:39 left in the game and going 4/5 for 72 yards to score a go ahead TD in 43 seconds? Or the other kind of putting a team on his back?

Does that matter? A guy was open and AJ got the ball to him. So he doesn't have a throw like Eli to Manningham yet. But not taking a sack, tossing a pick and not over throwing the wide open WR are all big time plays as well.

Hey guys,
After lurking for a while, this is my first post, so don't tear me apart too much.

Basically, I see McCarron (hot mom and girlfriend aside) at best a Sam Bradford. He has all the requisite tools, but is really not going to wow you with anything, and in the end may struggle with very tight windows in the NFL. But if he is as heady as he seems, he has the tools to work with and it would be up to an NFL coach to speed up his game.

Otherwise, I see the next Mark Sanchez. Someone who has enough tools, will get pushed up the board due to success, but needs someone to show him how to work as a QB in the NFL. If that someone isn't there, he will FAIL. He doesn't have the background as a pure passer to make up for a lack of coaching.

Saban is great at many things, but his QBs have not done anything in the NFL which make me worried.

My biggest problem is he only has really one game (LSU) when all of the pressure was on him and he succeeded. I, like many others, would like to see him shoulder a larger load, but coaching has something to do with this.

It's hard to believe a USC QB (before Barkley) didn't go in the top 10... but he really did.

I don't want him for the same reason I don't want Andy Dalton. His ceiling is mediocrity.

By Bucky Brooks Top 30 college football players 2014

8. AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama

McCarron doesn't get enough credit for the Crimson Tide's back-to-back national titles, but scouts are starting to recognize his pro-ready game. McCarron is capable of making every throw in the book and could enter the NFL with 40 college starts under his belt.
