Default 7 Potential 1st Round QBs in the 2014 Draft?

Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville: Best of the bunch
Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson:
Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M: Good chance he will enter.
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon: Sanctions could force him to enter the draft.
Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
David Fales, QB, San Jose State
A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama

What do you think are there 7 potential first round QBs? Could there be more.

I would say Stephen Morris and Bryn Renner are possible 1st rounders as well. They seem more likely to me than Murray or Fales anyway, maybe even Manziel but who knows what NFL people will think of him. Actual pocket passers with NFL size and tools.

Murray and McCarron won't be first rounders. I doubt Manziel will be either at the end of the day. Plus, if there are that many first round possibilities, at least one young guy will stay. I'll predict 4.

Also, homer pick for UCF QB Blake Bortles.

I wouldn't dismiss McCarron as a potential first round quarterback.

Is the potential there for Mariota and Manziel to be first rounders in 2014? The potential is there, but these guys have only started one season in college, and plenty can happen for RS Sophomore QBs while with some of the others being discussed there is a more proven track record and they have proven themselves over a greater stretch of games.

Marcus Mariota is that guy that will probably stay, but who knows with a good season he could decied his stock is high enough, plus Oregon could get punished by the NCAA.

Even though he sucked last season, Logan Thomas has a good a chance as any of the above listed.

Not sure that this is unique to next year. There is always a lot of potential first round guys.

Bryn Renner and Stephen Morris are both a long way away from being first round QBs. Renner plays in the gimmicky offense with a lot of weapons and an NFL offensive line. He struggles when pressured and has below average arm strength. He does have solid size and is an accurrate passer.

Morris has a nice arm, size and is athletic but his consistenctly bugs me. His accuracy has been all over the place. I think he's got some upside.

Certainly a good year for ACC QB's.

This isn't gonna happen, there was a time that Landry Jones, Matt Barkley, Tyler Wilson and Mike Glennon were all being talked about as first rounders.

There's always guys that show promise after their sophomore or junior seasons and you're like "if he can continue growth he'll be a first rounder". Sadly, most don't and often go mid rounds

The other side of the coin to this discussion, we talk about if the players' talent is there or not..... but the other side is..... how many teams will be in the market for a first round QB?

Seven? Maybe. But if you asked me to list them...... I'd only get you 3 or 4 teams in the 75-90% sure category...... everyone else in the 50-50 group at best..... and there are a ton of factors that go into that as well..... free agency, injuries, retirements, trades, coaching changes.....

I count too many teams right now with established or developping QB's to have seven QB's get taken in round 1 next year.

I'd add Brett Hundley of UCLA and if he has a good year Jeff Driskel, although I think he'll stay.

Not realistic that after it all works itself out there will be that many QBs taken. A lot of these guys are going to end up second and third rounders or just stay in school.

This is a huge point to make. Right now we are projecting these young QBs based on improvement from last year. It's possible they plateau or have a worse year. That's what happened to every QB this season. And most of them had 2 years under their belts.

Strictly up in the air right now, Bridgewater is the only one I'd guarantee as a 1st rounder, the rest will all need superb final seasons to make the jump as 1st rounders, some no doubt will finish with a 1st round grade while others fall by the wayside into lessor rounds. Just too early to get a read on right now.

Seven?

Agree with this, and I think it factors in just as much as the actual level of talent at the position in next years class.

I havent watched enough tape of any QB not named Bridgewater or McCarron to have developed a good feel for their talent yet, but from a probability standpoint, I would say that there is little to no chance that 7 teams will need a QB enough to invest the ressources of a 1st round pick a year from now.

If you divide the teams into 4 different tiers regarding how likely they are to need a QB enough to take on in the first round next year, I would rank it like this:

Pretty likely:
Oakland, Jacksonville, Arizona and Cleveland.

Maybe, but wouldnt count on it just yet:
Philadelphia
Minnesota
San Diego
Kansas City
St. Louis
Tennessee
Chicago – Cutler is in a the last year of his contract.
New York Jets (Basically a Jimmy Clausen/Cam Newton scenario, where Geno Smith completely blows, new coaching staff comes in, and the Jets have a Top 3 pick.)
Tampa Bay... I have no clue what Schiano is thinking when it comes to QBs.
Houston.

Very, very strange things need to happend:
New England and Denver – Only if Brady or Manning decides to retire, and how the teams feel about the development of Mallett and Osweiler.
Pittsburgh – Would be a shocker, but if Big Ben misses significant time with injuries again, I wouldnt count it out.

Cincinatti
Dallas.....?

No way:
San Fransisco, Baltimore, Green Bay, Miami,Carolina,Washington, Indianapolis, Detroit, New York Giants, New Orleans, Atlanta, Seattle and Buffalo – (Say what you want about EJ Manuel, the Bills are not going back to back QB in two consecutive drafts)

Given how QB needy teams kept their cool this year, and didnt reach for a guy in the first round like we´ve seen in some previous years, I cant imagine a scenario next year where there are enough teams as well as enough good QBs in a single class for nearly 25% of the teams to pick one with their first round selection.

And on the flip side guys go in the 1st round all the time nobody expects to like EJ Manuel, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, among others. We always get a few surprise 1st round QB's.

NFL teams absolutely love Jimbo Fisher QBs. The scheme he runs is much closer to an NFL style offense than even the so called Pro Style Offenses in college. The verbiage is very similar to NFL verbiage which impresses HC's and GM's when Fisher's QBs interview for the Draft. Fisher very, very much simplified the offense for E.J. Manuel and he still impressed a team enough to be the first QB taken because of how he understood the position.

At this point I only see one - Teddy Bridgewater.

No other draft-eligible quarterbacks that I'd label a first rounder at this point.
