Thomas (or any other prospect) going undrafted doesn't necessarily mean that he had an undrafted grade from teams, it just means that they had other priorities for their selections. It's possible (likely?) that Thomas had a draftable grade from one or more teams, but those organizations had prospects ranked slightly higher on the board in each round of the draft. In the forum mocks on this site, prospects I had with fifth or sixth-round grades go undrafted all the time; I know it's not exactly the same thing, but I'm assuming that happens all the time in the draft as well.

There are also some small schools that just have great programs, and really strong recruiting, so they get the best players that are overlooked by the big schools. Elon, Abilene Christian, Hampton, Stony Brook...every year we see guys coming from these schools that become contributors at the next level.

Bethune-Cookman's defensive backs coach is Terry Williams, who played for the Jets in the late '80s. He has done a great job of recruiting undersized, quick corners and delivering them to the NFL. Few of them become more than role players and special teamers, but they do make squads from time to time. The most successful of his players is Rashean Mathis.

Then there are those schools that welcome the big school guy who gets into trouble and is kicked off the team. Alabama St. and Tennessee St. come to mind, probably due to the recent drafting of Cordarrelle Patterson and Janoris Jenkins. I don't really see these small school players the same way. The small school was merely a landing spot for them while they waited for their eligibility to the NFL draft.
