Default Hall of Famer Deacon Jones passes away at age 74

https://twitter.com/Redskins/status/341775273395625985

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/ey...t-74-years-old

Quote:
Deacon Jones, a Pro Football Hall of Famer considered by many to be one of the greatest defensive ends of all time, has died at the age of 74, according to Redskins general manager Bruce Allen.

Jones was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 14th round of the 1961 NFL Draft, and he spent most of his 14-year career with his original team, racking up eight Pro Bowl berths and five All-Pro honors. He also spent time with the Chargers in 1972 (where he, again, made the Pro Bowl) and 1973 before playing for Redskins coach George Allen in his final season of his career in 1974.

Along the way, Jones became a valuable member of the “Fearsome Foursome,” earned the “Secretary of Defense” nickname, and he reportedly was the first to make use of the head slap in order to get a jump on the opposing offensive linemen.

“Deacon Jones was one of the greatest players in NFL history. Off the field, he was a true giant,” Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said in a statement. “[Jones'] passion and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. He was cherished member of the Allen family... "I will always consider [Deacon Jones] my big brother.”

Here are the spoken words of Jones as he describes some of his top games.

Sad to see one of the all time greats pass away. He invented the term Sack and unofficially held many records. I know it was a different era with different rules, but 26 sacks in 14 games is nuts if accurate.

He was a bad, bad man on the field. Loved listening to him and his stories on all the old NFL Films productions.

RIP Deacon.

Dude was intimidating as hell...at 70 years old...through a television screen.

And shut up, Razor.

I just found this out on NFLN and was really shaken. I have never felt this way about a player passing. I grew up hearing my Dad tell stories about Deacon Jones. They were the same stories over and over again, but they never got old. I never got to watch him play, but had this picture in my mind of a man among boys, rendering opposing QB's useless as they gave all their attention to #75. When I saw highlights of the Fearless Foursome on NFL Films, my visions did not do him justice.

The interviews I have seen of him only made my fondness of him stronger. Who gives themselves a nickname and has it stick like that? Deacon Jones does. And the reason for the nickname was classic. Back in those days, there were only 12 teams in the league, and they had no roster limits until the season started. David Jones, who was drafted in the 14th round, was worried that he might not get a fair shot...no one was going to remember a guy named David Jones from South Carolina St. So he came up with Deacon, and the legend was born.

The Rams family has lost a great - probably the greatest - brother. RIP Deacon Jones.

Prototype athlete for the position, 6'4, 265#. Deacon Jones is one of those golden age NFL players you could time warp from 1965 to 2012 and he'd still be a dominant player.

What did he die from??
ESPN is saying natural causes, but that makes it sound like Deacon died because he was OLD. 74 is getting up there, but we have older men serving in Congress.

RIP Deacon.

We lost a legend on the field. Deacon was arguably the greatest defensive end in NFL history (i have it very close btw him and Reggie).

He lived a long life, which is admirable for a guy who played in that era to be as healthy as he was. RIP.

A very sad day for Rams fans and all NFL fans for that matter. Deacon was one of a kind. He changed the position of DE in a radical manner and the way football is played today.

He will be missed.

The Fearsome Foursome is now down to one remaining member, Rosy Grier.

RIP to a legend. One of the worst forms of punishment imaginable would be to receive one of those club arm swings that he made famous. Even with a helmet on those shots looked lethal.

180.5 career sacks. 26.5 one year and 24 the next. I still don't get how he got that midget.

RIP.

Brings back memories of great defensive lines of the past. Purple People eaters, Steel Curtain, Doomsday Defense. The Rams were right at the top of that list.
