Default How bad or good will the Browns be?

Cleveland?

I heard PFielder awhile ago say the Browns are on the upswing.
I'm not really seeing it..... 5 wins sounds about right to me.

On that note, this is too hilarious not to share with y'all.

I think they will be better. Not playoffs better but I think they can make a push for 8-8.

They'll be as good as Brandon Weeden is. In other words, they will probably suck. What team drafts a 29 year old quarterback in the first round?

The guy that makes those Cleveland videos is hilarious.

The Browns will suck because they have no QB and they wasted their top 5 pick on a good but not-that-great RB two years ago. If they had Tannehill and Doug Martin/David Wilson instead of Richardson and Weeden, I'd buy them as a sleeper wild card contender, but the current team is just not good enough.

To their credit, if you factor in the Gordon pick, I thought they crushed the first 3 rounds in 2013.

Without having looked over the schedule and trying to predict it that way, it's going to be tough for the Browns to win more than 6-7 games. They're in a tough division where wins don't come easy.

I don't think they'll really surprise anyone this year, they've got too many questions on the team for that IMO. But when you look at the roster they have a young core of players that could develop to produce some upsets this season and win some games in the future.

People are spoiled these days with the production and difference making ability we're seeing with rookie QBs. Brandon Weeden played pretty well for a rookie QB.

He was a young QB on a young team last season. I think he'll show improvement, but I can't see them going more than 8-8

Seeing as they will either have Weeden, Campbell, or Hoyer as starting QB and they are in a division with Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh. Their Defense will keep them in games, but Cleveland will more then likely have a another Top 10 pick.

I still think Campbell can be an effective starter. He did ok in Oakland and Pittsburgh is taking a step back.

Norval will have Weeden humming. Trent Richardson in hindsight I think will be seen as overdrafted because of injuries. Can't blame the Browns, everyone at the time thought he was the right pick and I'm sure he'd be a Buc or a Redskin if they had a chance to select him in the 2012 draft.

The AFCN is down this year. Baltimore should be able to score points, but what are they on defense?? Steelers really need a bounce back year otherwise I don't see them as a top 10 team right now. Bengals are the most talented team in the division and should win it, that said I would not be surprised if the Browns go 3-3 in the division.

It starts and ends with Norval and Weeden. He's got some young big WRs and one of the best QB coaches in OC Turner.

8-8 seems very possible if Richardson can play most the season and Weeden cuts down on the turnovers and plays more efficient football.

His age at this point is a red herring. It's not like Weeden came into the NFL after playing 9 years in college. He's no more experienced than any other rookie from last year's class, which means he still has room for improvement.

Do you know what a red herring is?

You just made the argument yourself. He's 29 with the experience of a 22-23yr old.

It would be great if every QB drafted in the first round a team knew with certainty would play for their present franchise for more than a decade and be supremely excellent, but that's simply not the case.

If Weeden can hold down the spot for the Browns for 7-8 years and play at a reasonably high level, who cares if he was a 29 when he was drafted??

There are several NFL QBs who didn't play meaningful football in the pros until age 27 or later. If the guy can play, a franchise will take the production and worry about the future when the present is past.

What if I told you that in 2014, Weeden would become a consistent 3500-4Kyards a season/28-35 TDs/10-15 INTs a season QB?

Would it really stress you out that he was 31??

It's not like the Browns sunk a $30-40 mil guaranteed bonus in Weeden. I just don't see the downside except the 'OMG..he's overage!!', or the fact he might not be that good.

Who? Ryan Fitzpatrick is the only NFL QB who became a full time starter at 27 or older. Schaub and Romo were 26. And all of those guys had the benefit of sitting and learning the NFL game for a few years before starting.

As for the Browns, how good will they be? Better than the Jaguars.

I think the Browns can be competitive in most of their games, however I don't see them winning more than 6 or 7. Their offense has some potential but is still very inexperienced and oftentimes it is the experience of being able to pull out a close win which makes you successful. Defensively I see them being above average, however I don't think consistently they will put it all together.

I think they are on the upswing, however it may take another year.

i really don't like Pittsburgh this year, Baltimore I believe will take a step back but agree with others that Cincinnati look the class of this division.

A good, young defense led by Geno Atkins and a deep, talented defensive line, a running game which should be more explosive with the addition of Bernard (my pick for OROTY) and the passing game should be better. Eifert is one of the most underrated picks of the first round IMO.

I never really liked the Richardson pick. Its not that Richardson is a failure already, it's that they picked him 3rd overall. And traded away 3 picks in the process. They could've had better value with someone else and then picked a good running back up later. Or they could've done the right thing and traded for RG3. Oh, what could've been....

As always, it's very difficult to make the leap as a team without production from the qb position.

I feel like the Browns are improving, but not at the same rate as the Bengals or Ravens. I can see a 6 to 8 win season potentially, but they're not quite there yet. I feel like their offense is missing one more weapon, and the qb position is a question mark.

I feel that their defense is missing another pass rusher and a CB. They're a solid team. But they need a couple more difference makers to catch your attention.

They're improving, there's no question about it. The rate of improvement isn't dramatic enough for me to say they're playoff contenders though.

Winnable Games:
Dolphins
Bills
Lions
@Chiefs
Jaguars
Bears
@Jets
Bengals
Steelers

Best case scenario is 9-7 (and that is being extremely generous). 5-11 is much more likely.

Even though I completely agree that its usually waaay to high to pick a RB, I actually dont hate the Richardson pick. He was an elite prospect coming in to draft, and even though the amount of injuries is concerning, I still think he can become a very special player. As far as the trade goes, I have no problem with the Browns giving up a 4th a 5th and a 7th to make sure that they got him, if they thought he could be a cornerstone for their offense. They had 12-13 picks in that draft iirc, and would more than likely not put that amount of rookies on their roster last year. Leading up to the draft there where serious rumours floating around that multiple teams where considering leapfrogging the Browns to snatch up Richardson. If any of those where true, I have no problem with them trading some low round picks to make sure they "get their guy".
Sure, the Browns would look smarter today had they spent thir first rounders on Ryan Tannehill and Doug Martin, or if they had won the RG3 sweepstakes. Then again, they could have picked Weeden in the 2nd round, or spent that pick on Russel Wilson. But thats not really relevant when discussing wether or not Trent Richardson will be a succesfull running back in the NFL. And that was basically the point I was trying to make with my first post. Its just seems people (not only in this thread) are very quick to act like its already set in stone, that Richardson was a bad pick. And to repeat the point I was making earlier, I think thats absolutely ridicoulous.

If Mingo turns out that browns D is becoming really good, problem is Weeden sucks and will continue to be less than average for the next 3-4 years until he retires. So until the Browns sack up and trade up for a franchise QB it won't matter how good the D gets, or how capable the running game becomes, or how sexy flashy gordon is.

If Mingo pans out, I'd still like to see another pass rusher for depth.

And I think they need a better CB opposite of Haden. But the defense has potential to be great. It's a solid defense. Really they just need qb production, a CB, a depth pass rusher, and another playmaker on offense (WR or TE) to really become a legit playoff contender.

If Mingo turns out and they add another quality passrusher and CB that D would probably be the best in the league. But until their QB becomes really good they still won't do ****.

This is exactly what I was going to say but after thinking a bit more their D is quite formidable, and they have a good OL and RB. If they don't put too much on Weeden they could surprise a lot of people. Also Little and Gordon have had another year to grow with Weeden so I can't imagine the same product as last year. For Browns fans sake I hope they get something to cheer for.

As a Browns fan, I am cautiously optimistic for 7-9. I think we can steal 2-3 games best case scenario in our division. As many others have stated, if Weeden comes out and stinks it up, I can see 5-6 wins. If he comes out and is better than he was, I can see 7-8. If he somehow makes some crazy leap and is great, 9-10. We have a pretty talented defense, all we need is for 1 person to step up other than Haden and Ward in the secondary, and we can be really solid.
