In fairness, boxing is an individual sport with comparatively MUCH lesser expenses per boxer than any football team. Boxing could survive the drop in popularity that it suffered because those expenses were not large enough to submarine the industry as a whole.

Football is so much more expensive to manage and supply on a franchise basis at this point that a horrid drop in popularity would drop everyone in the red ink. Pros, College, High School... all would feel the burn.
