BUT to touch on it one more time the lack of respect for what Welker has done over the time in NE is arguably the best production from a slot WR in the history of the game.... Again im not saying he is a Jerry Rice kind of player, im simply saying as a slot WR he has done what no other player has done(Take into account that the 3+ wr formations are becoming more and more the base package as of late)

So comparing him to a guy that has never had more than 700 yards receiving and has always whether it be bad luck or glass bones found a way into the training room and not being able to help his teams is ridiculous.

The comparison is selling Welker so short it is like saying " I think this other WR that is 6'6 but really hasnt done anything can be just as good if not better than Calvin Johnson."

AGAIN I dont think he is even the best WR on the Broncos, but i do still think he is the best slot WR in the game and arguably the best ever.
My initial post wasn't meant to diminish what Welker has done throughout his career with the Pats.

Welker, for a professional football player has some big limitations. The fact that he produced like no other player before is a testament to those intangible traits he has. I wasn't trying to say Amendola is and/or will be better than Welker because that is a huge stretch but Amendola can do things Welker couldn't.

Welker's best trait in New England was his consistency, both in being in the right place and actually being on the field. It will be virtually impossible for Amendola to match those aspects of his game.

I'm really curious how these posts are going to look in a couple years, and how Welker's going to be thought of, if Amendola does come in and post the same numbers. I think there's a good chance. We know Welker's been appreciated in fantasy football, but that doesn't mean he's irreplaceable on his own team.

See I dont think Welker is a Fantasy WR, he is doing stuff such as extending drives with 1st down catches, and picking up yards underneath... he isnt scoring 15 TDs, and in fantasy TDs are king.

Welker is one of those players that isnt Fantasy gold but what he does on the field is gold for the team, being able to convert 3rd downs or make the distances to pick up 1st downs shorter, he is making the defences focus on the middle allowing other players to receive single coverage and if the defence doesnt focus on Welker he is able to exploit the middle..none of that shows up in fantasy leagues but has a huge impact on winning and losing games. Which is becoming something the casual fan isnt focused on, its becoming as long as player X gives him 20 points who cares what happens.

Maybe 10 years ago, but with nearly every league getting points per receptions guys like Welker who go way over 100 are highly coveted and getting quick hitting slant patters before the defense can adjust is easy points all game long. I realize that isn't all that he does, but there really isn't any rational way you can say he isn't a fantasy WR. You don't think Calvin Johnson extends drives with 1st down catches or picks up any yards underneath?

Obviously someone that is coming close to the 2000 yard mark with tons of 40+ yard receptions will have a ton of 1st downs... but in the slot position is very different and you often hear about the slot on certain teams being the "security blanket" because they have the potential to take advantage of the mismatches.

It's already been pointed out that this isnt a Patriots thread and I personally think he might be the 3rd best receiver on the Broncos...but that is because we have 2 really good young guns.

BUT TO TOUCH ON THE SLOT POSITION SO PEOPLE WILL QUIT TRYING TO COMPARE #1 or #2 WRs TO SLOT GUYS

The Y is usually the slot receiver, which puts him in the area between the outside receiver and the end of the offensive line on that side, either the tight end or tackle. This receiver has to be a tough, physical player who is also rather fearless because he consistently runs his routes in the high-traffic areas in the middle of the field.

And when he catches the ball the contact is coming fast from bigger players like linebackers and defensive linemen at times against zone blitz defenses that drop the big guys into the passing lanes from time to time.

The slot receiver also has to have more quickness than raw straight-ahead speed. He has to make quick, sharp cuts to get himself open. The slot receiver also has to think fast, because the routes are shorter, the defenders are closer and the ball comes quickly.

They might all be WRs but the responsibilites are very different.

Hate to defend them as I hate the Patriots -because of Little Bill- but did you forget them here?

They have to be above the Bears & Vikings.
3 of the best 10 teams in the NFC Norris?
