Can someone please explain how the Jets will make the playoffs? No QB, average RB, no weapons, an average defense...

They'll do it for Rex.

Geno.

Their defense will be good.

Their run game will improve with Ivory.

Weapons are a byproduct of qb play. The lack of weapons will magically produce more when a viable qb is throwing them the ball.

The team went 6-10 last season and proceeded to lose a good number of useful veterans like Moore, Keller, Devito, Pouha, Revis, Landry, and Bell.

All things considered I was a fan of their offseason (sans Revis trade) considering the limited resources they had available to them. Colon, Barnes, and Ivory were solid pickups, and I really liked their draft, however their team has a comic amount amount of holes to the point where it looks like a late season roster before a single injury has even hit.

Their QB, RB, WR, TE, G, OLB, and Safety spots all have an argument for being among the worst positional groupings in the NFL. Even their D-Line which is supposed to be the strength of their team hasn't proven to be an elite unit yet in the NFL.

They're easily the least talented team in the division, and they have the biggest question mark at the QB spot. Who are going to be the guys winning games for them? Their best players are a LT, a C, a 5 Tech DE, and a CB. How are those guys going to win them the requisite 9-10 games they're going to need to make the playoffs?

Ivory and Holmes are already banged up, and no QB can improve a weapon if they struggle to catch the ball like Hill has.

Even if all of the strengths they're supposed to have work out, and a couple of things go right like Geno Smith starting and playing well it's still a stretch to see them being a playoff team.

The Jets seem to be heading in the right direction, but this is going to be a bad team this year.

The major loss on defense is their safeties, but Rex doesn't need elite safety play in his scheme. Hell, he had Pool and Brian Leonard as his safeties at the peak of their defense. They'll be fine defensively.

They improve at LB by going younger. They never had OLBs to begin with, Rex schemes for pass rush. They have good CBs and a good DL. Rex makes it work. Defense will be perfectly fine.

Offensively, the OL will improve with Geno. He'll buy them time. And I'm a big believer that their weapons are a lot better than fans realize. If you look at the all 22 of the Jets from last year Sanchez had guys open often but he just doesn't see them.

Sanchez is just god awful. He's not even a backup qb to me. He's just awful. I think if Geno can play the way I think he's capable of playing, he'll be the offensive spark that they need to bring out the production in the rest of the guys. Couple that with a good defense, and you have a chance to win.

Rex is a pretty good coach, it's a shame that his antics overshadow that.

I mean, that was the one I was least confident in when I made my predictions.

He's never started Antonio Allen and Dawan Landry back there though, and who knows if Cro will play as well as he did last season considering he has arguably never played that well before, and certainly didn't in his first 2 seasons with the Jets. Plus, Milliner hasn't been amazing in camp, and Kyle Wilson isn't any good.

Also, Colon and Harris both have major struggles in pass protection, plus the Peterman, Winters, and Ducasse rotation leaves a lot to be desired. Just because Geno Smith is a marginally better athlete than Sanchez doesn't mean that's going to offset a line that isn't really that great in pass protection.

Their LB's are unproven as well. You have Demario Davis who struggles against the run, although he is a great athlete who could improve that unit. It could get better or it could get worse. That team struggled against the run last season, and that was with Scott, Pouha, Landry, and Devito who're all good run defenders. It's hardly a lock to get better.

I just don't see any way you can justify calling this a playoff team. Even with the things that are supposed to be their strengths it's hard to see it functionally resulting in a winning formula, and that's before the attrition of the season starts to erode some of those strengths. They could be a good running team, but they're playing a dangerous game with the injury question Ivory and only the extremely average Bilal Powell to back him up.

For every strength you can come up with for that team, I can come up with 3 questions for it, and the other 3 divisional teams are unquestionably more talented and deep. The Jets never won more than 10 games under Ryan with some stacked rosters, and this one is nowhere near as good.

Revis pretty much didn't play last season, let's not count him.

If it was easy to predict, it wouldn't be a bold prediction now would it?

I'm making a bold prediction based on projection of talent, scheme, and improvement at qb. Will it happen? Who knows, but you can't make a bold prediction without taking some educated gambles and assumptions about incoming talent.

My basis for this is my belief that their qb play was so abysmal last year that their offense is actually much more talented than people believe, which I do believe after watching the all 22 and seeing guys open down the field and Sanchez just doing Sanchez things back there, I believe OL pass protection is not a black and white picture and is largely influenced by the qb's ability to get the ball out fast, pocket presence, and scheme as well as individual talent, and I'm projecting talent on the defensive side of the ball.

Again, if it was an easy prediction to make it wouldn't be made in this thread. These predictions are all about taking chances with your assumptions. Realistically I see the Jets as a 7-9 team, but with some lucky bounces who knows.

Which is fine, anything is within the spectrum of possibility. However, I've seen this prediction more than once, and any justification of it relies entirely on how bad Sanchez is. I have yet to hear a solid answer as to how the Jets are going to win games with this roster. It's fine to remove the cancer and I think they added some nice future pieces, but this isn't a team that is ready to figure out how to win yet much in the same way the Rams and the Titans have struggled in recent seasons despite some nice pieces on their rosters.

2009, 2010, and 2011? You know back when they were signing guys to initial $1 million cap hits on $50 million contracts so they could be in win now mode. It's entirely almost entirely the reason why they're in this mess in the first place.

- Christine Michael gains more yards than Marshawn Lynch.
- Golden Tate goes for 1000+ yards and 10+ TDs.
- The Jets AND Bills finish ahead of the Dolphins.
- All FIVE rookie QBs improve on their statistical output.
- Ryan Broyles catches 100 passes.
- Rivera and Schwartz get fired.
- Baltimore wins less than 10 games and misses the playoffs.

I have yet to pick my sleeper team(s) or even solidify my picks for the season but these are some early leans.

Are the Jets any less talented than the Colts last year? I'm not saying Geno is Andrew Luck, but I'm just saying, I think the overall talent level of the Jets is better than their perception.

If you can play tough defense and run the ball you have a chance to win. I believe they'll do both this year.

Chargers will be drafting the first qb next year
Ryan mallet starts somewhere by the end of the yrar
The nfl becomes cam newtons playground
The bills defense lives up to their talent and wins the afc east
The colts face the broncoes in the afc champ

I just wrote a huge response about the Jets and accidentally closed the window.

The Jets went 6-10 last year yet people talk about them as if they were truly one of the jokes of the league. They weren't. They had a couple of disastrous National TV games and of course made some hilarious plays and headlines. But realistically their defense was above average.

But replacing Sparano, giving Sanchez back his fav. receiver, and improving the running game should go a lonnnnnnnnnng way on an offense that relied on a horrible OC, the plodding Shonn Greene, and Tim freaking Tebow.

The team is strong in the trenches on both sides of the ball. That's huge.

And the players play hard for Rex. This isn't going to be a Raheem Morris thing.

They have concerns obviously but this team competing at a high level is not as far fetched as say the Jags or Raiders.

I'd say the 2 teams are comparable talent wise (Pro Bowl type-Jets, Depth of useful players-Colts). However, their overall situations are nothing alike. The Jets talent level is inline with their perception. The Sanchez thing is a magic bullet for a roster that had deep seated issues this past season which is even worse this season.

I have yet to pick my sleeper team(s) or even solidify my picks for the season but these are some early leans.
I think this is the boldest group someone has posted so far.

I really think most of you are over-estimating the Jets defense a bit. For example Jets opponents averaged 340 yards a game and 22.5 points per game. Against the Jets they averaged 323 yards and 23.4 points per game. They had big issues stopping the run at times last season, and played some comically bad QB's. This isn't a great unit. It has some potential, but this isn't a Rex Ryan defense of old.

Yards and points allowed per game tend to be a bit skewed when your offense can't do anything but three and outs.

yes on points to an extend. yards not so much as the teams will make games shorter by running a lot
