Default E!$PN Creating a New Bowl Game

Quote:
ESPN has created a bowl game in Montgomery, Ala., between the Mid-American and Sun Belt conferences beginning in December 2014, the network announced Monday.

The deal between the Montgomery bowl, MAC and Sun Belt is for six years, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

The bowl will be the ninth owned by ESPN. The network also is currently negotiating to take over ownership of the Heart of Dallas Bowl and create a new bowl game in Boca Raton, Fla., sources said.

The new bowl game in Montgomery will be at least the 36th bowl game in 2014. If the Boca Raton bowl is added there will be 37 bowl games.

If ESPN purchases the Heart of Dallas Bowl and creates the new game in Boca Raton, ESPN will then own 11 of the 31 non-College Football Playoff bowl games beginning in 2014.

Last week, ESPN took ownership of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, pitting the MAC and Mountain West conferences beginning in 2014.

ESPN Regional Television also owns and operates the BBVA Compass Bowl (Birmingham, Ala.), Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl (Fort Worth), Las Vegas Bowl, Gildan New Mexico Bowl (Albuquerque), Texas (Houston) and Sheraton Hawaii Bowl (Honolulu).
I am never an opponent of additional bowl games because more football is better than less football, but at this point 72 of 126 FBS teams go to bowl games with the likely possibility E!$PN adds another bowl game to make it 74/126 teams go bowling, or just under 60% of FBS teams.
