Default 2014 Prospects Making Position Changes

Which 2014 prospects are more than likely to make position switches this season or after the season?

Colt Lyerla, Oregon TE, would make a hell of a 3-4 olb.

I hope De'Anthony Thomas will realize his value would be best at WR come combine time.

I started a thread like this a year or two ago and it didn't get a real big response, but I think it's a super interesting but under-appreciated aspect of scouting the draft and I'd certainly be interested in a running discussion.

Taylor Martinez at Nebraska has a chance to be a WR if he doesnt show progression at QB this year IMO, same with Cain Colter at Northwestern

Dion Bailey at USC will be one to keep an eye on as he was a productive 6'0 200 all confrence type linebacker his redshirt freshman year and has had a bit of injury problems since but is a SS/OLB hybrid type

I still think Logan Thomas would make a heck of a TE at Virginia Tech he has no accuracy and at 6'6 255 would have almost jimmy graham type potential

Trey Burton at Florida is another interesting versatite guy at 6'2 235 has flex tight end skills but has played RB and QB and fullback so he will be a very tricky player to place like former gator Aaron Hernandez but not as explosive

The two biggies are Kain Colter of Northwestern and Taylor Martinez of Nebraska, who "Da Big Harv" mentioned above. Then of course you will have numerous examples of the typical OT to OG, DE to OLB, CB to S, etc. Dri Archer of Kent St. is a RB / WR / RS wildcard as well.

I can't see Lyerla switching positions, especially if he is used in an offense in the NFL where the TE is utilized more than it is in Oregon's offense. You don't get guys that are pass catchers that are athletic as he is and also have his 6-5 height and 250 pound size. He could be used as a mis-match on opposing defenses, the same way the Patriots use Gronk.

Jordan Lynch is a guy who I have questions as to whether he can play QB at the next level.

Pretty sure FSU answered those questions last January with a resounding no.

Here are some more possible position changes outside of the ones already mentioned.

Jeff Scott of Ole Miss, currently a RB but will see how the season goes, has big time speed but might not be able to take a pounding game in and game out. Could possible transition to a slot WR I feel if he lacks any toughness in the run game but will see if he has improved that.

Jamal Londry-Jackson of App State, currently a QB but I feel he has potential as a receiver at the next level, very impressive athlete if QB does not work out for him.

Brandon Mitchell is currently at NC State, will see how he does at quarterback given a possible chance to start for them. But he does have potential at receiver if that does not work out, did not really take advantage of the opportunity last year at Arkansas, will see if he has improved at all at QB.

As for Taylor Martinez, I think he is far to frail to play receiver, and with his improving quarterback play and all the read option stuff in the NFL he might get a chance at that position if he keeps improving as much as he did last year. He is a good athlete but a little too straight line and not extremely strong or good at breaking tackles.

As a Nebraska fan I see this every week, people have said he gets better every year but it's still looks like that on almost every throw. He is fast and can run pretty well, i just think if he tries to work out as QB NFL Scouts are going to laugh him out of the building.

He isn't even good as a college QB so pro would be a joke, as you say.

He does have excellent speed and if he could get himself in that 6-1 215lb range he could maybe excite people as a wr. Good athlete no doubt.

Yea can't get over his throwing motion, he is a good college QB and exciting player to watch at the college level. IMO he is a better Denard Robinson. He would fit in well to the "OW" postion the Jags created for Robinson.

He has more upside than Robinson as well.

He does not have more upside than Denard Robinson. Robinson was a significantly superior position-transition prospect.

That is absolute horse S....

Just like Caulibflower said, Denard Robinson is a superior prospect in terms of a WR/RB prospect compared to Taylor Martinez. Denard is elite and has been considered a game changer offensively for quite some time now. He could make people miss and has legit speed in the open field. Taylor is fast but has not where close to the same quickness or toughness. It is not even close, and Denard can take a hit, Taylor cannot and seems very frail to be honest which is why I kind of question him as a WR.

Aaron Donald DT Pitt.

I could see Seattle making him their annual 7th round DT turned OL project. They've made it a point to identify certain DT prospects they think can make the switch to offense and the results of that philosophy has turned out extremely fruitful thus far.

Donald shows extreme versatility and the motor/dedication to make the switch. He's a shade light, but that's how Tom Cable likes his conversion prospects. Add 10-15 to an athletic build and let the coaching and self motivation of the prospect take over.

Why in the world would you do that? Sweezy switched because he kind of sucked on the DL. Donald is easily one of the best pass rushing defensive lineman in the country and would potentially make one hell of a 3/4 DE. Would be very stupid to move him, and at his height I doubt offensive line would be a good fit for him, he can get under people at that size on the DL not on the OL. I also think he will be a higher draft pick than the 7th round, especially if he has another great season as a pass rusher, in the past two seasons as a SOPH and JR he has 16 sacks and 34 tackles for a loss and 110 tackles overall.

Jeff Scott has some toughness, he is just tiny. A ton of speed though and he is a threat as a returner. He will get a shot with someone, he is our #1 RB this year but we plan on working him out of the slot some. We will see how it goes, I think he can do it.
