The Bills have signed K Dan Carpenter. That's his 4th team in a month, three of them in the AFC East.

Apparently Dustin Hopkins was injured during Monday's practice.

I wasn't aware of this until just now but apparently the 49ers and Chiefs swapped AJ Jenkins and Jonathan Baldwin a couple weeks ago in a trade. Jenkins finishes his 49ers career with 0 receptions. Is he officially the worst first round receiver ever taken?

He's in the short list, but actually given the totality of the circumstances for Tampa Bay, I'd give that honor to Bo Jackson (my childhood hero FWIW) since he refused to sign and never played a game for them, and unlike the Elway trade, Tampa Bay got nothing for trading his rights.

Marcus Nash was a 1st round pick for Denver in 1998. He lasted two seasons in the NFL and finished with career numbers of 4 receptions for 78 yards, all from his rookie year.

This thread reminded me on an anecdote from the early years of the NFL Draft, a team drafted a QB solely by how he looked in the team's media guide only to find out he couldn't throw the ball more than 20 yards down field.

R.Jay Soward is another name to be considered among the worst 1st round receivers ever. The Jaguars took him with the 29th overall in 2000 (the Tom Brady draft) and was gone forever from the NFL after a rookie season of 14-108.

Seems like he more fell victim to drugs than anything else.

From his CFL tenure this sounds awesome!

Quote:
In that game, Soward was dubiously remembered for an overzealous touchdown celebration. After scoring a touchdown, he ran into a concession stand setup behind the end zone, grabbed a bag of popcorn, and shared it with a teammate and nearby fans. Though his touchdown helped to put his team up 14-0 after the first quarter, the Argos got outscored 33-3 for the next three quarters. That led many to believe that Soward's timing for his celebration stunt was not only premature, but a catalyst that fired up the Alouettes.
I've looked but cannot find a clip on YouTube, I can't believe one doesn't exist for that.

Question. I'm not old enough to remember this first hand, but in the current NFL system I think if a player were to hold out all year the team would get that same pick in the next years draft. Was this not the case back then? (is it even now? IIRC I remember hearing that when Mount McKinnie was holding out)

You might be thinking of someone else but that reminds me of the story of Bobby Garrett and how scouting for the draft during the 50s was non existent. Garrett was the first pick in the 1954 draft but had a stutter that was so bad he was unable to call the plays in the huddle. The Browns traded him to Green Bay who were also unaware of his stutter problem. He played 9 games in his career.

His wiki profile:
Robert Driscoll "Bobby" Garrett (born August 16, 1932 in Los Angeles, California) was an American football quarterback who played one season in the National Football League.

Garrett was an All-American quarterback at Stanford University, where he also starred as a defensive back. In 1953, he became the third person to receive the W.J. Voit Memorial Trophy as the outstanding football player on the Pacific Coast. After being was named most valuable player of the Hula Bowl, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns as the first overall selection in the 1954 NFL Draft. The Browns had needed someone to take over for the veteran Otto Graham, but they soon discovered that Garrett had a liability as a quarterback: he stuttered, which made calling plays difficult.[1]

Garrett never played a game for the Browns, who traded him along with halfback Don Miller and linemen Johnny Bauer and Chet Gierula to the Green Bay Packers for quarterback Babe Parilli and offensive tackle Bob Fleck. The Packers wanted a backup for veteran Tobin Rote, but did not learn of Garrett's stuttering problem before making the trade. Garrett played just nine games in the NFL.

Talk about fleecing a team in a trade. That story is familiar, but the one I am thinking of I think came from the 30's.

Another 1st round WR bust for the 49ers. Woods, AJ Jenkins and also JJ Stokes from UCLA was a huge flop. The only other 1st round WR they've taken in the last 30 years was some kid from Mississippi Valley State in 1985. Mr Jerry Rice. It's either total bust or the GOAT for San Francisco with their first round WRs.

All these guys caught more passes than Jenkins. The guy couldn't even catch 1 with the 49ers. Also, parting ways with a first round pick after just one season has to be some sort of record. I don't mean someone retiring because of injury or whatever, I mean flat out giving up on a guy after one year because he was such trash.

JJ Stokes has the 8th most catches all-time for 49ers WRs. He wasn't worth the 1st round tradeup, but he wasn't an NFL bust.

Trent Baalke doesn't seem to have any fear of cutting his losses and getting something in return, as quickly as possible.

AJ Jenkins was pick #30. Just 2 seasons ago he dealt Taylor Mays (pick #49)

Rams released Dunbar.

I know he is suspended for 4 games, but that's a pretty big cut for their defense.

He made a good third receiver behind Rice and Owens.

Yeah. Tough to rack up catches when you have Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens, Brent Jones, and Ricky Watters being targeted before you.

Nit-picking, but I think Watters left as a FA the same offseason Stokes was drafted. Not a bust. Didn't live up to the hype either.
