Default 2014 DTs

I didn't want to dedicate an entire thread to him, but I did want to discuss DaQuan Jones of Penn State.

1st rd pick Jared Odrick of Penn State had 43 tackles, 11 tfl and 7 sacks as a senior. To compare, Jones has 18 tackles (12 solo), 5 tfl and 3 sacks through two games.

I remember being surprised before the season when one draft "expert" from CBS or something ranked him as the #1 senior DT.

Gil Brandt had him his #1 senior DT and #9 senior overall.

DaQuan Jones looks to have improved leaps and bounds over his junior year. It looks like he's taken his physical shape seriously and has dropped in the neighborhood of 15-20 pounds since his junior season.

His quickness has improved markedly. He's naturally a big guy who looks like he'll have to maintain dietary discipline going forward to be successful. At least this season, it looks like he's done that.

He's had a monster start to the year and has been consistent. If he continues, he'll be in the Star Lotulelei class of prospect. Maybe even top 10 overall. Generally a lot of DT prospects flip the switch so to speak in their senior season. Jones looks like he may well have done that.

EDIT: I'm probably alone in this, but I can see this year's crop of DT to be superior to last years. Last year saw a lot more traditional run stuffing prospects. I think the pass rush DTs this year looks considerably better than that of 2013. There are several prospects that I think have a real shot at being very productive interior rushers. Jones is more of an all around DT who can do both -- sort of in the Fletcher Cox model. Not as good as a pass rush specialist. But a guy who is more like an every down DT.

This. He hadn't done anything earlier in his career that made me feel like he was much more than wasted potential but he's really kicking it up this year. Reminds me more of Devon Still than Odrick in that regard as Odrick had multiple good seasons but Still was wasted potential until the light came on as a senior.

Did Jones switch from NT to UT this year?

He was primarily a run-stuffer last year. So far this year, he is living in the backfield.

Still waiting to see if he's legit or just a flash in the pan. Who is Penn St's next big opponent?

Central Florida is this weekend, not exactly "big" but better than we've been playing. Michigan and Ohio State are on the schedule in October then Nebraska and Wisconsin to end the season. Should know by the end of October whether he's legit or not.

UCF used a lot of quick passes out to the flats. Jones got in the QBs face a few time, but the QB was very experienced and had the passes out quick.

Yes. Jordan Hill is a smaller, quicker player, so they had Hill play UT.
