I know that the NFL has been taken over by the "kicking for it is actually losing points" fad, but advanced metrics fail to capture context and momentum. The Falcons lost momentum, provided the Jets with confidence and took easy points off the board against a stingy defense. I refuse to accept that psychology is no longer a factor in sports and everything can be explained with metrics. Kick the damn field goal.
This. Funny how people overlook this so much.

The game goes completely differently if they kick the field goal anyway. The game would have been tied early in the 3rd Quarter and that changes everything.

Aside from that, there were 4 minutes left when the game would presumably have been tied (when Atlanta went for it on 4th & 1). The Jets would have come out with a completely different offense for the ensuing drive and Atlanta had 2 time outs left.

Either way, not taking the points was stupid.

It's not overlooking, it's the right call with a bad play to make it on. You have a far greater net gain going for it on the 1 yard line than you do kicking a field goal, it's just how the NFL works right now. The Falcons have Gonzo, Julio and Roddy as passing options along with Snelling and what's his face at the other tight end spot...they can EASILY make that 1 yard TD pass. Hell, it's not like Matt Ryan is immobile either.

Yeah, that momentum they got from stopping them sure helped the Jets. It helped them so much that they went three-and-out to start the second half and then the Falcons proceed to go right down the field and score the next drive. That's some great momentum that the Falcons gave the Jets there!!!!

...and it's just as easy to argue that the Falcons making it there would have been a huge momentum shift in their favor. The Jets failing to stop the Falcons on fourth down later in the game also has potential momentum implications, especially with that result stemming from a boneheaded penalty in a key situation. Didn't seem to bother them much when they were marching down the field a few plays later.

The reality of it is that it's impossible to predict how a team will respond the the various plays that influence momentum. No doubt that's a factor in the game, but we can't measure or predict that. We can keep track of points.

I'm usually aggressive but I at the time, would have kicked the FG, as I said then.

But I also subscribe to the theory that if you can't score from there, you deserve to lose too.

I don't you think can argue that play didn't have a positive affect on the Jets team. Momentum isn't the perfect word for it.

Please tell me where the positive affect was. Going three-and-out the next time they got the ball? Letting the Falcons score three second half touchdowns? You can't pinpoint the positive affect it had because there was none. The Jets defense did not start playing well after that stop. You could argue that they played worse. There was absolutely no momentum shift resulting from that stop so momentum should not be accounted for when discussing whether it was the right call or not.

The Jets have as many wins as the Giants, Falcons, Packers and Steelers combined.

Now we are going down the rabbit hole, but what I'm saying is I believe it was a key play in the game for the Jets. I believe if you don't allow them to make that key play in the game it would affect the outcome of the game. Maybe there is a dimension out there where they kick the field goal and we can find out how the game plays out. You just need Elizabeth Comstock to make a tear and we can peek in. (Bioshock Infinite reference).

I do put the loss on the offensive line and defense though. I get your points.

"Momentum" might be the most BS term in the history of sports.

If Atlanta lost the momentum then how come they were the first team to score AND outscored the Jets in both the 3rd and 4th quarter? If anything they gained momentum.

Well, it's just morale... "Momentum" is a change in morale. In this case, both Trans stayed pretty strong in their morale. There were no swings. It's about being mentally and emotionally strong as a collective unit.

It was eventually going to catch up with us. Giants and Steelers had a good run but our teams both need youth movements.

I feel like both teams just need one good offseason to bounce back though. But both are just plain awful this year.

I think a major issue with the Giants are what you eluded to: they quit. Which is why a coaching change and a fresh start is in order. We have 20 free agents at the end of this year and can cut even more guys, so this team is going to look entirely different next year. A lot of the veterans from the 2 SB teams are going to be gone.

We have a qb, WRs, OTs, and in theory you'd hope RBs on offense. We need a TE and interior OL. On defense we have passable DT play, but need 2 DEs, a whole new LB core, a CB and 1 safety.

With so much money being freed up after this year, I expect us to be major players in FA. I want Byrd and Albert.

This season I want us to keep tanking and take Clowney. That would solve a lot of problems on defense by default.

I think the Steelers just need a whole new defense. Their secondary is awful and old. Their LB core outside of Woodley is mediocre and/or old. And Woodley is a fat body on top of that. Was never a Jarvis Jones fan. Their DL old. Old old old. They're just old.

On offense they have no skill position talent. Brown is an overpaid #2 WR pretending to be a 1. Sanders is a #3 pretending to be a 2. Miller is old now. Their OL sucks. The G from Stanford (name is escaping me) isn't playing well. Neither is their OTs.

And Haley is a bit of a tool as well.

They're in bigger trouble. They might need 2 offseasons.

What's the math behind going for it there? 100% chance of 3 points, and 50%(guessing) chance of 7, and 3.5>3 so you go for it?

I think they underestimated the Jets offense and overestimated their offense.

I don't really mind being aggressive there. You're on the 1 yard line, you can punch it in for 7. I like being aggressive.

I just hate the play call. Their front 7 was owning your OL all day, and you run up the gut? On top of that you run up the gut with Quizz instead of Snelling?

On top of that, you don't even put Roddy or Julio on the field to lighten the box and give Ryan the option to check to a fade/slant?

It was a terrible call. I hate the call more than I hate going for it.

Basically how I feel. No excuse to not have your best players on the field so you can run right at a DL that has been dominating your OL the entire game to that point. I wonder what percentage of runs up the middle work on on __ and short plays. Quick off tackle plays with the playside guard kicking out>>>>>>
