Every offense has WR rules. Some are more complex than others. The complexity depends on the scheme and the personal preference of coaches.
I can only speak for what I know, which is the Choice Route offense the Giants run. For the Giants, your individual route will depend on what the defensive coverage is, combined with how the DB is playing you. If he's defending outside shoulder you release inside, if he is defending the inside shoulder you release outside, if he's in zone you do A, if he's in man you do B, it can get fairly complicated. The route depends on a # of factors.
For other offenses, it could be as simple as your release. Your route could be your route, with the option to sit in zones vs continuing to drag your route in man coverage, and releasing inside vs releasing outside etc.
Or it can take the next level of complexity with option/choice routes.
Or it be a simple if he's off coverage run A, if he's press run B type of route.
It all depends on what the WR rules are for the offense.
