r4l you don't even watch soccer, get out.

Peralta has been the best goal scorer every time he has seen the field. A lot of these guys won't be in the WC squad and it's a shame considering how the European squad guys just lolly gagged through qualifying.

Good luck getting out of the 1st round. That squad blows...one of the worst Mexican squads ever.

They're not getting out of group play. It would probably take a tie against the 1 seeded team and the way the defense looks, we'll be lucky to keep it within 3. They have six months to give a **** again so who knows.

tbf, the "rest of the guys" probably would've taken care of business against NZ anyways.

Sure, but they put them in that situation and would have missed the WC if it weren't for an assist from the USA.

Send the guys that got you there. They are going to go out in the group stage anyway, roll with the guys that looked like they gave a **** during qualifying.

So the field is set.

Pot 1:
Brazil
Spain
Germany
Argentina
Uruguay
Colombia
Belgium
Switzerland

Pot 2:
Japan
USA
Costa Rica
Mexico
Australia
Korea Republic
Iran
Honduras

Pot 3:
Ghana
France
Ivory Coast
Nigeria
Chile
Ecuador
Cameroon
Algeria

Pot 4:
Netherlands
England
Italy
Portugal
Russia
Croatia
Greece
Bosnia

I can definitely see a crazy group of death such as:

Brazil
Japan
Ghana
England

or a mediocre one such as:

Switzerland
Honduras
Algeria
Bosnia

December 6th is the draw.

Edit: Here is a draw simulator http://ultra-zone.net/2014-FIFA-Worl...up-Stage-Draws

I did it five times, here are the results:

1. Spain, USA, Ivory Coast, Bosnia- Not ridiculously awful
2. Germany, USA, Ecuador, Portugal- At least we'd beat Ecuador
3. Belgium, USA, Nigeria, Portugal- Slightly easier, but Belgium already killed us recently.
4. Brazil, USA, Ivory Coast, England- Not the easiest but I'd take it
5. Switzerland, USA, Cameroon, England- I'd be jumping out of my seat if we got this group. I think the USA could definitely win this one. Based on a draw, the second round would likely be a matchup against Russia, and then Brazil in the Round of 16. I'd take it.

switzerland is ranked higher on the bogus fifa rankings than all the teams in pot 4.

lol guys, usa isn't gonna sniff the knockout stages unless they draw switzerland, algeria, and greece.

I don't necessairly agree with that. The US could beat every team in pot 3. They'd also stand a good chance against England, Bosnia, Russia, Greece, and Croatia.

The only group I would be believ they have no chance of advancing through is if they get stuck with the Netherlands or Portugal.

Switzerland have walked all over a pretty solid group in qualifying and have a great record in friendliest against bigger sides. The Swiss are legit. Hitzfeld's probably the best coach in rio, has an experienced and very tough midfield who can handle the ball for that young front four of Shaqiri, Xhaka, Seferovic and stoker. With a good goalie behind a tough defense featuring two really good FBs, the Swiss are a ***** to play against with the firepower to hang with and knock out some giants.

The Swiss would stomp that group and Greece would bunker their way through to second.

The Ivory Coast would stomp the is and France would have to not out France themselves.

In group for it's the Dutch and Portugal, and Italy, and Russia, and croatia, and even England/Greece would out bunker them. Bosnia's the one team I think the us can advance past without a lot of help from a meltdown.

usa has a chance for 3 points against any pot 3 team not named chile, france, cote d'ivoire, and of course usa isn't beating ghana. pot 1 and pot 4, usa would be lucky to snatch a draw against any of those teams. with 4 points in group stage, there's about a 50% chance of advancing. so unless usa gets a favorable group, which chances are slim to begin with, their best bet is 50% of advancing. i am extremely confident they don't advance. the quality of this year's WC is higher than those in the past imo.

"pretty solid group in qualifying" is heavily overrating the quality of switerland's group in qualifying. iceland, cyprus, norway, albania, and slovenia are clearly weaker in comparison to the other UEFA groups. i agree hitzfield is a brilliant manager but after i saw my dear corea del sur handle them, albeit in a friendly where switzerland was jet-lagged, they're not worthy of pot 1.

Look at the rankings for those teams. Cyprus sucks, but that group has a higher average than say the Netherlands' group.

i abhor fifa rankings. after looking through the other groups, the swiss' group wasn't TERRIBLE, but it was clearly one of the weakest groups. it's still impressive they went undefeated i guess but they really don't deserve pot 1.

With that and the friendlies it makes sense that they made it, and they'll show they deserved it in Brazil.

Yeah, I’m not optimistic that the U.S. gets out of their group. It would take a spectacular run of form, a complete collapse from a giant, or a combination of both. Don’t get me wrong, I think the USMNT is in its healthiest shape in a while, but I’m just not convinced that bossing CONCACAF and some friendlies will translate to immediate World Cup success. Klinsmann (and Don Garber) should continue to build their brands beyond this cycle. (If Klinsmann doesn’t head elsewhere.)

Pot 1: Big-time underdogs to all sides. Even Switzerland. I don’t have much faith in Bease or Evans containing wide attackers like Shaqiri, Stocker, etc.

Pot 3: An African team wouldn’t be a bad draw because of their goalkeeping streakiness, but it’s far from a guaranteed result. Those squads have some energetic midfields and legitimate attacking talent. Wouldn’t feel comfortable against Chile’s technical skills. France is France. Their focus might wane, but their class and depth dwarfs the U.S.

Pot 4: You’re going to struggle to find a favorable draw. The Dutch, English, Italians, and Portuguese have their weaknesses, but they’re still traditional powers with (varying degrees of) world-class talismans. The Greeks could park themselves to a result. Incisiveness and inventiveness were problems in CONCACAF. We’d need to string together some great builds to unlock that bus. Croatia would pose plenty of problems going forward. Can’t speak to Russia as I haven’t really watched any of their national team and I’ve only seen some of their players in European club competitions, but I imagine it wouldn’t be a cakewalk. It’s pretty much Bosnia. Which isn’t an “easy” draw.

Aside from the draw, anyone wondered why Klinsmann never experimented with a 3-5-2? Fullback is easily the weakest position in the American camp, and Klinsmann doesn’t seem to want to play Cameron at right back, but still views him as a quality player and natural centre back. I’d assume the 4-2-3-1 would modify to:

Howard

Cameron – Gonzalez – Besler

Jones – Bradley

Donovan or Zusi – Dempsey or Donovan – F. Johnson

Altidore – Johansson

Adds a second, complementing striker to Altidore and prevents Klinsmann from sacrificing a functional midfielder. Gonzalez is positionally worrisome as the central defender, but I don’t have much confidence when he’s insulated in a four-man defense either. Nor do I have much faith in Bease or Evans against world-class wingers. It’s certainly a risk – because I don’t think there’s much familiarity with a three-man system in America – but I wouldn’t have minded to see the experiment at least. See what it did in terms of fluidity or frailty.

Russia deservedly came ahead of Portugal. They're a very capello side who are very well organized and tough to break down with their excellent midfield, have a great goalie, strong fullbacks, and some great young talent up front. If Kokorin, Dzagoev and Shatov are healthy and capello can keep them from losing their focus again, Russia will be very tough to beat.

Several top players have been in poor form lately though, which has me worried.

Even Akinfeev has allowed some softies leading to some fans (mostly Zenit fans) to call for Lodygin to replace him.

The Center backs are showing their age, they've been shaky lately.

And then there is Igor Denisov, the Dennis Rodman of Russian soccer. Talented and very hard working player, but has A TON of off-field baggage. Cappello hasn't even called him up recently, choosing Glushakov instead. I like Glushakov, but he doesn't have the defensive presence of Denisov.

The CBs are what worry me, although with capello's bunkering roots and deep line that does help the problem. Igor is still a world class goalkeeper in the tier right behind Neuer, Lloris and Cech. The depth at FB is better than most countries, including the giants at this tourney, and even without Denisov there's still some very good central midfielders to call on between glushakov, mamaev, Shatov, faizulin, Dzagoev as a ten, and of course Russia's other...eccentric...Shirokov.

If they can get on form over the second half of the season the knockouts need to be achieved.
